As for the privacy issue:

The only counter to this is to move to a closed end-to-end encrypted groupchat so it can't be mass LLM analyzed...

If you want a public forum, well... its public...

You can't stop a script from just grabbing all the posts/comments... and its also federated, so the bot only needs to be able to access one instance and get it...

I mean they could simply just set up their own instance and pretend its just a benigh single-user instance... like what are you gonna do, defed all small instances preemptively? Use "login walls" to make the forum private? And somehow trust all other admins that are federated and make them also enforce a "login wall" policy?

Its a PUBLIC forum...

the only solution for privacy is a groupchat and only let in people that can keep a promise to not screenshot everything and give it to a LLM.

search "[Carrier Name] default SIM PIN"

if you get it wrong twice, then just forget about it (max 3 attempts), I mean just be careful and don't let your phone get stolen lol

(Or if you have the PUK (its on the back of the plastic card that comes with your SIM Card (for physical SIMs)) you can just get it wrong 3 times then use the PUK to reset the PIN)

I have this memory of getting a 3x3 Rubik's cube from mom for... I think either X-Mas or New Years... Not sure if "favorite" but definitely most memorable...

I think this is the only time I didn't have to "beg" for stuff... usually I only get stuff if I really nagged my parents a lot... and my requests get denied frequently (cuz money issues being a new immigrant) but this time I kinda just mentioned "I want that magic cube thing that I had before, I wanna solve it now", I mentioned it like with the past two weeks, and she just went ahead and got one for me... (but its those cheap ones with the weird stickers that would eventually fall off... I kinda destroyed it cuz I'm bad at keeping stuff lol, like I broke or lost a lot of things I had) But hey, she didn't get it because I begged, she actually wanted me to be happy... like that felt more emotional, more like a real gift than just being a "bribe" to keep me quiet and stop being annoying.

That was during my... I think early teen years, and before that I had a cube in my early childhood like at least few years before, can't remember much about those earlier cubes I had except as a memory of recalling another memory.

I used to closer to her... I think I just got older and... um... life expectations (careers, sucess, expectation of being able to be independent and acquire wealth and win this game of capitalism)

Soon on TERF Island:

They're gonna have AI cameras to detect if you "went to the right gender bathroom", and if AI decrees that you've entered the wrong one, they'll flag you as a "sex offender", then activate the terminators posted at the store to "eliminate sex offenders"

SIM PINs are 4-8 digits

The SIM Chip itself is supposed to limit entry attempts to 3, idk if anyone managed to bypass it

After that, it required a PUK Code, 8 digits I believe. Its sometimes found on the big plastic card thing (its like the size of a credit card, and you pop off a physical sim from it). 10 Attempts.

I think the carrier also has it.

So an attacker needs to either:

  1. Guess the SIM PIN in 3 tries
  2. Somehow hack the chip to bypass the limits
  3. (a) Obtain the plastic card thing or (b) Social engineering to get customer support to provide PUK (I mean if they can manage to trick customer support, they could probably just get a new eSIM (which is immediately issued to their phone through the internet) anyways
    or
  4. Somehow guess a 8 digit code in 10 tries

The thing is, I as a kid/teen messed with tech stuff a lot (got my parents SIM cards locked a few times 👀, they got so mad at me lol) and I found that sometimes I can reboot a phone and the 10 attempts on the PUK code would reset... idk how, maybe the SIM card had issues... or maybe it's a T-Mobile issue.

114

Why YSK:

Because this scenario:

I know what some people are thinking:

My eSIM is tied to my phone, phones these days have encryption, so all I need to do is set a lockscreen password then a thief cannot access any of my data.

WRONG

At least in Android: You can just use some button combo (just look up "[Phone model] hard reset") to get into the recovery menu and wipe all data, then reboot, and the eSIM is still there!

(Caveat to this: If you happen to have a Google account, it would force a FRP lock, and that would stop access, but most of fediverse does not like those type of online accounts, so: without a SIM PIN and without FRP locks, the eSIM is accessible to a thief)

Now the thief has your bank 2FA Codes!

TLDR: Set a pin on your SIM cards, even if it's an eSIM (but especially if you use physical SIM cards)

(Curious: Does anyone actually use SIM PINs or do I just have a lot of paranoid regarding tech and potential hacks/exploits)

Offtopic but:

OMG I can just imagine if my mom gave birth to another kid who grew up in the US and only spoke English, mom's English would be like: "Go where come back?" (去邊度返來啊?)

Lol that sound so weird to a native English speaker but that makes complete sense in my multilingual brain xD

("Where did you just come back from?" would probably be a more grammatically correct translation)

Good point

+1

But that's why we need the "good guys" to also make a "Good AI" to counter the corporate influence.

FOSS AI

13

I mean just throw in a bunch of stuff you already liked, and then ask it to find similar stuff... Or just ask for a genre of stuff like "Space themed show with a lot of politics" (Assuming you didn't already know that, then voila, it spits out: Expanse)

If it fucks up and give you something totally not what you were looking for, there's not much harm besides a small bit of your time. Its fictional media anyways, just don't go looking for news or medical advice lol, avoid treating it as a truth machine and its not that bad...

Okay sure you can hate the corporate that is gonna do evil shit with these tech, but the tech itself still kinda useful... (maybe we'll get some very advanced and ethically made FOSS "AI"/LLM in the future, who knows)

Who the fuck buys calandars? We get them for free at the Asian Supermarket lmfao.

My parents get like at least 5 of those every year lmfao

so many calandars that can literally ward off evil spirits (cuz red color all over it, and the big character 福 on it... and also a bunch of new year stuff on it)

Basically the takeaway was:

"Fix your sleep schedule"

"Just go outside more"

"Stop being anxious, other people aren't constantly thinking about you"

Also I get asked like "so what do you do at home?"

um... how should I answer this? "Oh I read online forums that has politically extreme memes?" (I mean that's what half of Lemmy memes are...)

Or am I supposed to explain every youtube video I watched?

Idk how to even answer that...

My parents are paying the copays and I'm on parents insurance... honestly if I had to pay for this, I'd probably just sue them for funsies lmao... maybe if I win a medical malpractice lawsuit, the payout will cure my depression xD (okay probably not medical malpractice, but I felt like I was just wasting time so I really wanna just go sue them for fun lol)

I'm actually gonna die of "big sad" lmao

(My soul definitely died...)

LITERALLY listening to music feels more helpful than "therapy" or whatever... like 5th meet already... it feels equally weird in person and on video call... Like it just keeps getting more awkward each successive meet...

The "therapist" is white guy btw...

Dude was like "so do you feel like you have trouble acclimating to this country?"

And okay I know there's no malicious intentions... but the way that was asked felt like what right winger would ask and then follow up with "so why not go back"....

Okay so maybe its just my paranoia... but that kinda triggered me... so the rest of the session... like 15 minutes of the remaining time I just felt like I had a PTSD event gone through my head...
