I've used mullvad for quite a long time, but because it doesn't have port forwarding, its created some concerns with media sharing. Ive seen TorGuard and AirVPN as the main 2 that are recommended. Are they as trustworthy as Mullvad?

Exactly the title. I'm researching having a jellyfin server and downloading media seems like it would be tedious (the way I've done it once or twice previously). I could use some clarity on what Sonarr is, what it looks like (like is there a GUI?? I'm too stupid to run something off of a terminal), and how it works. I'm familiar with torrenting but not with usenet, and I use the megathread from this community. Can someone explain Sonarr/Radarr to me in a way that would be understandable to someone at my level of understanding?

I've tried switching to Linux from Windows 10 twice now. The first time went wonderfully (on Mint) until I found out that secure boot was stuck in the enabled mode and I had to completely reinstall my bios. This was absolutely necessary as everything was unbelievably slow, especially gaming (on a decent laptop). I understand this is totally my fault as almost every Linux guide says to make sure secure boot is disabled. After fighting with that for literal days, I finally reinstalled Linux mint. WiFi was suddenly completely nonfunctional, no networks were detected, and none of the proposed solutions I saw online worked. I have very little experience with Linux and other complicated tech nerd stuff besides that which comes with tinkering with computers occasionally. I do however have a great deal of patience and stubbornness. I spent maybe a week or 2 just working on this first attempt at making Mint work, until I ran out of patience. After coming back to it a month or 2 later, I decided to try Pop!_OS. Once again, it went incredibly at the start. Because I fixed the secure boot situation, I could now game better than I ever could when I had windows installed. Very few compatibility issues showed up that I couldn't conquer. Suddenly, I try playing Enter the Gungeon after having already played it a couple of times. Nothing out of the ordinary, I had done this before. Suddenly the entire computer freezes and I can still hear just fine. I restart my computer and... no sound. Nothing from any possible source, not Discord, not Firefox, not even the media I have downloaded. I look up the problem, I see several people have had it before, and only a couple ever got a solution. I try EVERY proposed solution on any forum with even similar issues, and still nothing. I have been fighting with my computer for 3 or 4 hours now. I've heard Linux praised for feeling like it is your computer that is subject to your will. I'd disagree right now, because it feels like there are spirits in my laptop trying to intentionally fuck me over every time I start enjoying the Linux experience. Does it get better? Am I crazy? Am I haunted? How is this anyone's ideal experience?

edit: I'm on an MSI Thin GF63. Nvidia GPU, Intel CPU. Compatibility seemed fine WHILE this latest attempt was working, up until my sound got fucked. I have a hard time imagining if that could be related to anything besides my sound card and drivers, but I'm nowhere near savvy when it comes to Linux. I'm now installing Bazzite as some of you guys recommended so I can ease myself into this whole Linux thing. I'll give another update if this fixes it :3

edit edit: It's still happening. I can see the "Alder Lake PCH-P high definition audio controller" in my audio config GUI apps and I can see the meter moving when audio is playing. Still, nothing is played. I am not dual-booting. Ive seen people have had issues with this card before, but seemingly the only solution (that I've yet to try) is to buy a whole new laptop. I don't have the money to do that currently. If someone is particularly tech savvy I am willing to hear out proposed solutions, but know that I have tried nearly everything online even remotely related to broken audio on Linux. My computer is haunted and I'll need a proper qualified exorcist it seems. note: it works with Bluetooth headphones. I haven't had a chance to test it with wired headphones but I will continue to give (near)real-time updates.

Ive been working on a project and I'm extremely hyperfocused so I just thought to throw something together really quick. Upon putting the tofurkey and cheese onto the tortilla, I thought it could use something to make it more "nutritionally complete." Thats when I remembered I had a leftover taco from taco bell in the fridge. AMA I guess

update: I finished it and it was pretty good

I currently use windows 10 in my daily life. I often play games, use browsers, basic stuff like that. On top of that, I also experiment with different music software, mostly Reaper for now. I edit videos and images at a very basic level as well. Upon switching, what should I expect to change? I'm considering Pop!_OS seeing as its praised for its compatibility and easy switching. What's the situation with gaming look like? I know gaming on Linux has been a HIGHLY discussed topic for a while, is it easy to play any (non triple-A) steam game? I'm nowhere near involved in computer science, I'd just consider myself more stubborn than most end-users so I can persevere through some basic problems.

Giving items to other players (self.elitedangerous)

Currently I want some materials or a ship to a friend of mine. Neither of us want to do the grind at the start, and she wants to at least START with the ability to laser mine or fight pirates. Is there a way to give a ship? Or if not, how can I give them minerals that they can then sell and be able to afford the ship?

I'm sure you've read or heard this before, but project hail mary is great. The whole bobiverse series was incredibly satisfying to read and the 5th book is out recently in the form of an audio book. Low pressure, low commitment series thats just full of engineering porn.

id argue a police officers job is hard in a police state as well,

i of course agree with acab but i also think its worth empathizing with officers whose mental health has been ruined by their training (see That Dang Dad on youtube who WAS a police officer and still experiences the pain of his "training"). theyre trained to be afraid and see danger everywhere, which is fucked, and as such being a police officer is not a job with 0 drawbacks. we all hate police, i sure as hell do, but no one should be trained to live in permanent fear, seeing murderers in everyone.

sexual fantasies and high sex drive are perfectly fine as long as you keep it to consenting parties, no shame in experiencing these things

i imagine regular masturbation would help somewhat but its up to you and how much time you have tbh

the thing to always remember is that these fantasies and this sex drive dont mean anything about your morality, and dwelling on it will likely make you worry more.

I see the word comrade get passed around a lot on the internet, particularly lemmy, and I've never really known the lore behind it. The only association I have with the word is that it's a word I primarily see used by tankies (as in, authoritarian leftists who hate on authoritarianism in the west but not in the east). Does anyone know and can explain it in a relatively understandable way?

[-] Cattypat 64 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

fun fact for the future: someone being suicidal is not your problem and you should not try to help beyond referring them to helpful resources

theres a reason mental health professionals are PROFESSIONALS and not just random kind people

you are (likely) not trained to handle this situatuon and thus should not engage in this lest you experience real trauma or worsen the other persons situation

so do not kill yourself in the process of trying to be the sole force stopping them

edit: felt the need to add if someone you know is experiencing suicidality, oftentimes the best and safest choice is just to make plans

suicidality is, in the majority of cases, spurred by short-term issues making people feel trapped in their current situation

so plan things with them! plan going out to a concert or restaurant! plan how they can enjoy life in the future!

this is something i feel VERY strongly about because of my own past experiences with feeling the need to "negotiate"

keep in mind im not saying you cant just talk about life with people expressing these ideas, just make sure the conversation doesnt turn into a "negotiation"

ty for reading my long ass comment thats indirectly about my own experiences i love all of you lemmings kthxbye <3

I'm fairly new to piracy overall, but I feel like I understand the basics of how to avoid my ISP and such. A family member who's in college texted me the other day asking how she could pirate textbooks and I realized I'd never thought about it. Any tips for pirating textbooks? Safe sites?
