Lindsay Broughton hails from Whitby, Ontario!

Not a huge country music person, but hopefully this is a good share for the country fans here.

As we all know, The Junos were just a few weeks ago this year. The Junos of course, is a yearly awards ceremony giving recognition and applause to the best music talents that Canada has to offer...

...but to whom?

In previous years, there has been strong debate as to whether the stated intent of the Junos matches that of how it works in reality. While many artists see the Junos as what they present themselves as, an awards ceremony giving recognition to the best of Canadian music talent, others see the Junos as advertising Canadian talent to the American music industry.

Some artists have been quite outspoken about the latter opinion, with Matthew Good not attending the ceremony for any of the four awards he's won as a result of it. Others such as Kardinal Offishall have openly criticised the awards for having American acts such as The Black Eyed Peas perform.

This week we discuss our thoughts on the Junos, and the extent it serves as a marketing tactic for larger music industries outside our borders.

From Vancouver, MDK delivers an incredible hardcore sound with this track, which is much expected from him and his experience in the genre.

Hey all! This here is a list of Canadian music websites that will slowly grow over time as more sites are found and added. These websites will all be a great resource for users to follow, share, and discover Canadian music, music events, and perhaps even a bit of music history.

If you have any sites you are aware of that aren't listed here, please feel free to leave a comment pointing them out! While this post will not be pinned to the community, it will be added to the sidebar as a helpful pointer to Canadian music resources to new community members and those passing by.

THIS LIST WILL GROW AS MORE RESOURCES ARE DISCOVERED

Digital Music Magazines:

  • Exclaim! - Canada's biggest music magazine! On top of having a digital publication, one can find print copies of Exclaim! for free all around Canada.
  • HipHop Canada - Canada's go-to digital magazine for Canadian hiphop and rap news. These people give the Canadian hiphop scene the true attention it deserves as Canada has a huge pool of undiscovered hiphop talent. Please give them your readership.
  • Roots Music Canada - Your go-to stop if you love roots music and want to give Canadian talent your listening ear. Please feel free to support them with a donation or volunteer writing as they are independent and donor-funded.

Canadian Music News:

  • CBC Music - The CBC has it's own section of it's website dedicated solely to music news! Please, of all the music news listed, your readership here is appreciated as the CBC is publicly funded with your tax dollars. Put those tax dollars to use by reading the excellent news provided here!
  • CityNews' "The Music Beat - Centred specifically on Calgary, The Music Beat is a segment of CityNews' programming that gives attention to Canadian music and the Canadian music scene as it pertains to Calgary.

Other Publications with Music Segments:

  • Calgary Guardian's "Five Minutes With" series - The Calgary Guardian does a weekly "Five Minutes With" segment in which they highlight music talent in a five-minute interview with the artist. While artists typically are Calgarian themselves, interviews also include other artists throughout Alberta.

Canadian Music Databases & Directories:

  • Calgary Cassette Preservation Society - the Calgary Cassette Preservation Society (CCPS) is a small preservation group based in Calgary focused on preserving Calgary's local music history. One can discover older music recordings from cassettes and records, as well as links to download rips of these historical tunes.

Included in their website is a directory of Indigenous musicians based in Manitoba, a listing of upcoming live music events, and music resources for aspiring indigenous musicians in Manitoba.

Music Publication Archives:

  • The Canadian Folk Music Awards - Canada has an incredibly rich folk music scene, indicated by the countless folk music festivals that occur around the country each year. These awards give recognition to the cream of the crop in a deep pool of music ability.
  • The Polaris Music Prize - This award is for the best album of the year based purely on artistic merit, not sales, genre, or label.

Useful, Non-Canadian Resources:

  • MusicBrainz/ListenBrainz - MetaBrainz is a non-profit organization based out of California that seeks to create the world's ultimate music information database. MusicBrainz is their primary project, which serves as an incredible resource by providing users the option to search for music talent based on area. One can find musicians throughout Canada, in specific provinces, or specific cities or towns. ListenBrainz is a joint project which serves as a music tracker much in the same way lastfm is. ListenBrainz's radio feature allows users to find musicians utilizing specific tags, such as the country they're from, the genre they specialize in, or both.
  • ReverbNation While owned by Singaporean company BandLab Technologies, ReverbNation's search feature allows one to find musicians within certain countries and localities using their Location search.
  • BandCamp - BandCamp, while American, has incredible search features to help one find Canadian music and musicians. One can combine genre tags and the area in which they wish to find musicians. BE CAUTIOUS: sometimes non-Canadian music will appear in results as they are posted on the pages of Canada-based music publishers. Big example of this is non-Canadian electronic musicians appearing in results due to their music being published on the pages of a record label based in Canada, such as Monstercat.

Not even just progressive vote splitting.

You can absolutely sell this idea to supporters of the PPC by telling them that their party was robbed of multiple seats because of first-past-the-post. It's shocking that they haven't been advocating for this on their side of the aisle considering it would massively benefit their odds at representation in parliament.

[-] BinzyBoi@lemmy.ca 3 points 4 days ago

Made a wrong assumption then, not that it means anything, but downvoting myself to make up for jumping to conclusions.

What I think is that the Greens and NDP are highly disappointing, and as much as they overall don't align with my values, I'll likely be voting Canadian Future since I refuse to vote NDP unless Jagmeet steps down and they get their leadership act together. I would have voted for the Greens if they ran a candidate in my riding like they said they would on their site, but come April 9th when the entries list was finalised, they were nowhere to be seen. Even then it was only because I've been impressed with Pedneault to the point that it makes up for May still being party head.

I just feel that we could in such a different position where people didn't have this conception of there being a need to strategic vote if these two parties actually fought like they should be. The NDP being this low after achieving Dentalcare for Canadians is beyond pathetic. Jagmeet says it in his speeches, but it should be all over the place with their advertising talking about how they strong-armed the Liberals into passing it.

[-] BinzyBoi@lemmy.ca 5 points 4 days ago

Ah, so you didn't even read the comment. Congrats. Go ahead and "strategic vote" and have fun making this country ever so slightly more like the U.S. by forcing smaller parties to dissolve creating a two-party system.

Layton would be rolling in his grave seeing the lack of fight people have for their values these days.

[-] BinzyBoi@lemmy.ca 8 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago)

Greens, NDP, Canadian Future. All running with proportional representation in their platforms.

[-] BinzyBoi@lemmy.ca 8 points 4 days ago

So you also think not voting Liberal leads to fascism? I love when parties are entitled to my vote, that's definitely how democracy works.

My comment here summarises things.

[-] BinzyBoi@lemmy.ca 7 points 5 days ago* (last edited 5 days ago)

You do realize that giving your vote away from a smaller party to a larger one leads us more into the two-party lockup that the U.S. faces right?

Always there's this one-sided thinking of "oh, but if you vote this way, then it's your fault when the party most opposed to you wins. Why do we never ask why the party that's most positioned to beat the party we're most in objection to isn't out there trying to appeal to us? Why must we appeal to them?

By deciding that your vote is a waste when it goes to a smaller party, then congrats! Your "strategic voting" dissolves support for the smaller parties which in turn leads to their eventual dissolution, and then voila, you end up like the states where the larger left-wing party ends up losing support amongst it's own base in pleas to appeal to Conservatives driving the overton window to the right.

EDIT: Quickly adding to this comment that if the Liberal candidate for my riding doesn't explicitly come out in support for proportional representation, I will be throwing my vote elsewhere. Sent an email, and keeping an eye on public events.

I mean, if they bothered to run a candidate in my riding...

Quite literally unbelievable. They say on their site they have a candidate for my riding, I reach out and email the given contact on their site offering to volunteer, I get zero response, and then find out Canada's Future can run a candidate here, but not them. Borderline pathetic.

Hey guys! Look! A Lemmy.World user!

Point and laugh!

But seriously what the hell is with this mindset always seeming to come from .world?

I made this community about a week or so ago on the Lemmy.ca to help promote Canadian music and musicians. Been posting each day, with features in the community such as a ListenBrainz playlist for songs shared in the community, weekly featured artists, and weekly discussion posts (currently paused until Monday to sync it with the start of the week).

This is something I'm incredibly passionate about. Canada has a lot of music talent that is overlooked, and while the amount of Canadian music talent has done nothing but grow, the discoverability for Canadian musicians has faltered in recent years with the decline in local Canadian music publications.

Please come in and share tunes from Canadian musicians, inform people of music tours occurring in Canada, and showcase Canadian music news and magazine articles!

And although he does not blame Trump personally for the economic downturn, “the people he’s appointed and the way they’re going about things, it’s not OK,” he said.

Bruh, one bad pick for a leader to make is understandable. Things happen. When it's the entire fucking administration, maybe, just maybe, the person heading it has more than a little responsibility for shit hitting the fan?

Good lord man, talk about a lack of critical thinking skills.
