Wheel weights. Their wheels will be unbalanced, meaning their steering will vibrate at certain speeds, depending on what the new balance is.

It’s not unsafe per se, at least not primarily. It’s annoying as fuck tho.

[-] EdibleFriend@lemmy.world 24 points 1 year ago

Is that literally why they exist? To fuck with people?

[-] snooggums@kbin.social 62 points 1 year ago

They are used to balance tires, but only one or a few in the right locations.

[-] irkli@lemmy.world 21 points 1 year ago

No, they are used to balance wheels and tires that are out of balance.

When a new tire is mounted on a wheel, it has to be balanced on a machine that spins it, locates the light side, operator adds weights to make it balance.

[-] shadeless@discuss.tchncs.de 12 points 1 year ago

Haha no, wheels and tires can't be produced balanced consistently. So after the tire is put on the wheel, you put those weights on to balance them.

[-] Nioxic@lemmy.world 4 points 1 year ago

Nope. If you walk past cars you will often see this.

My car has a few one one of the rims

[-] Shardikprime@lemmy.world 4 points 1 year ago

Holy shit my brother I had seen these things for years, thrown in the ground and always figured they had something to do with cars, only didn't know WHAT. you sir have scratched that mental itch and my brain lobes are forever thankful

I got a flat tire and needed to replace the tires. Since I was going to get new tires soon anyway my quick replacement was a used tire different from my others.

My car was unbalanced and it felt so weird, had to keep checking if I got another flat because the vibration feeling was so off.

Weights, to mess with the balance of the wheel

[-] Cheradenine@sh.itjust.works 20 points 1 year ago

Stick on tire weights. They're used to balance the weight of a tire, or in this case to massively un-balance a tire.

/c/fuckcars would love this

[-] Danatronic@lemmy.world 23 points 1 year ago

Ohhh the syntax for tagging subs is an exclamation point?

[-] Burns@lemm.ee 11 points 1 year ago

Yep, and I the web UI it also autocompletes so much easier. Not sure about all the apps though

[-] Danatronic@lemmy.world 6 points 1 year ago

!fuckcars@lemmy.world

Doesn't auto complete on Liftoff.

[-] JonVonBasslake@lemmy.world 6 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

On connect it renders your link excluding the exclamation mark, but the other one includes it as a part of the link... Odd see here

[-] Burns@lemm.ee 1 points 1 year ago

🤷‍♂️

I've been spending too much time on noncredibledefense, I thought they were ERA blocks at first glance.

[-] FinalRemix@lemmy.world 5 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

Well, they can be... just not very good ERA blocks...

[-] itadakimasu@lemmy.world 16 points 1 year ago

Can't even tell wtf I'm looking at. Terrible meme

[-] AstralPath@lemmy.ca 13 points 1 year ago

Git gud at mémé understandment, pleb.

[-] tox_solid@lemmy.world 6 points 1 year ago

Sounds like a you problem, bud.

[-] scarabic@lemmy.world 6 points 1 year ago

You could have googled it in less words

[-] SatyrSack@lemmy.one 7 points 1 year ago

What words would someone search if they had no idea what was in the image?

[-] scarabic@lemmy.world 12 points 1 year ago

https://www.google.com/search?q=metal+squares+on+car+wheel

“metal squares on car wheel” does it right away.

[-] orphiebaby@lemmy.world 3 points 1 year ago

I mean, the person is wrong, but I don't know how one would Google it. Maybe that Google Pixel feature? Most people don't have it though.

[-] thegreatgarbo@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago

Easier to wait for a couple helpful comments. On my phone with the poor resolution of the image, I didn't realize the top pic was those same weights on the tire, and didn't understand that until another user pointed it out. Just thought the pic was of a tire without weights.

[-] Teal@kbin.social 2 points 1 year ago

The top picture is a car wheel with far too many wheel weights. The bottom is a large amount of wheel weights. They're used to balance wheels which helps make the ride smooth.

[-] betterdeadthanreddit@lemmy.world 27 points 1 year ago

Nice try, eBay wheel weight merchant.

[-] halfempty@kbin.social 10 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

Mess up their handling so they lose control and hit somebody? This is totally f*cked up.

[-] Pok@lemmy.world 34 points 1 year ago

Not sure if you're trying to be funny, but in case someone thinks you are being serious_ Unbalanced tyres will not cause someone to lose control. They'll get a little vibration feedback through the steering wheel, which may even be felt by passengers.

[-] doggle@lemmy.world 13 points 1 year ago

This is an extremely unlikely outcome, but no reasonable person would be tampering with other people's cars after seeing a meme on lemmy anyway. We're just telling jokes here.

https://www.tirereview.com/balance-runout-and-maximizing-tire-miles-for-fleets/

Not sure if source is legit, but seems like 1 pound of weights is the limit for on road use.

[-] wheeldawg@sh.itjust.works 5 points 1 year ago

Did you not read the name of this community?

[-] TigrisMorte@kbin.social 8 points 1 year ago

Remove tire from rim, place shot put in tire and remount, victory.

[-] LillianVS@lemmy.world 3 points 1 year ago

For a second I thought they were lithium batteries, then we'd have an attempted murder charge on our hands lol
