Google added sorting by color on Black History Month and the world just fuckin’ watched.

[-] Sanctus@lemmy.world 60 points 1 year ago

Someone just got hired at my work and they organize their apps by color. I started disassociating.

[-] exoplanetary@lemmy.world 24 points 1 year ago

I’ve got a folder called “apps with a white background” for shits and giggles. Still adhere to it to this day

[-] synae@lemmy.sdf.org 20 points 1 year ago

I'd call the folder "don't open at night"

And then it'd be only a matter of time until I suspect it summons demons or something, and open it anyway

[-] ChaoticNeutralCzech@feddit.de 9 points 1 year ago

summons demons

Guess what, an F-Droid app already exists for that. And people still dare say they don't have one for everything!

makes a program whose icon changes colors every few months explicitly to annoy people like this

[-] Infynis@midwest.social 6 points 1 year ago

I didn't used to sort mine by colour, but then I noticed when sorting by purpose, I'd usually end up with only one or two colours (often blue), and so now I sort by colour and purpose to I have a nice gradient

[-] Sanctus@lemmy.world 4 points 1 year ago

My apps are in an alphabetical list.

[-] candybrie@lemmy.world 5 points 1 year ago

Damn those visual people. Remembering what things look like rather than what they're called. Bunch of idiots.

[-] FlyingSquid@lemmy.world 4 points 1 year ago

Please don't tell me they do the same with their books.

Oh no wait, they probably don't have any.

Features for literal babies, I guess. "Little Elsa sleeps better when we put on the Blue right-wing propaganda disguised as children's shows."

Bro this made me so mad, holy fuck. Just show me the channels I'm subscribed to and adjacent content, that's it. You haven't succeeded at that in years.

[-] joyjoy@lemm.ee 33 points 1 year ago

Not dumb, just useless. I'm sure some intern is very proud of this.

[-] Custoslibera@lemmy.world 8 points 1 year ago

I’m going to generalise here but I have a strong suspicion I know the type of person/people who came up with this ‘brilliant’ idea.

Im guessing their homes and Stanley cups probably feature a pastel aesthetic.

[-] JeSuisUnHombre@lemm.ee 19 points 1 year ago

The feature I really want is to be able to filter my suggested videos by length.

I once knew someone who organized their CD collection by colour to annoy her house mates.

[-] spujb@lemmy.cafe 8 points 1 year ago
[-] repungnant_canary@lemmy.world 6 points 1 year ago

Cute or not, it's wasting money and time that could be spent on actually improving the app. YouTube constantly pushes more ads more aggressively saying they don't make profit, while wasting money in such absurd way

[-] spujb@lemmy.cafe 4 points 1 year ago

prove that it’s wasting money.

advertisers have long understood the relationship between color and emotion. to me it seems downright reasonable that google have discovered (or are collecting) data that increases viewership, retention, and total ad revenue 🙂

If the purpose is to provide alternative recommendation feeds, it's not useless. Ever had that feeling when you go to the yt homepage and you don't see anything you want to watch?

[-] BolexForSoup@kbin.social 24 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

But why would sorting by color solve that for me?

This feels more like an interesting solo hack together project on GitHub that one can take lessons from than an enterprise solution to any sort of issue or feature request.

[-] superb 11 points 1 year ago

It literally just filters by colors in the thumbnail

[-] ivenoidea@programming.dev 10 points 1 year ago

It just sends you to filters at the top for the color, there are tons of others already there that you can use to find new stuff, including a „new to me“ one that will only show things you actually haven’t seen before.

[-] Swedneck@discuss.tchncs.de 3 points 1 year ago

wouldn't the optimal way to deal with that just be a button that shows you progressively more different content the more you click it?

why would showing me green videos somehow be particularly helpful?

[-] LemmyKnowsBest@lemmy.world 6 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

yeah that happened to me an hour ago. I chose the middle one because that was my favorite color scheme of the three choices. Result: the associated video selections were nothing special But I wonder if they took into account my algorithms I already had going, plus the blue purple color scheme 🤔

[-] Klear@sh.itjust.works 11 points 1 year ago

Why would you even interact with a dumb promp like this?

[-] LemmyKnowsBest@lemmy.world 3 points 1 year ago

because I was curious cuz I've always wanted to go to promp but nobody ever asked me.

[-] Kuba@programming.dev 18 points 1 year ago

For the most part yes, but yellow videos often end up in green and Red at the same time

[-] Even_Adder@lemmy.dbzer0.com 5 points 1 year ago

That's pretty funny.

[-] cupcakezealot 5 points 1 year ago

add black so it can recommend dan howell and mcr videos, cowards

[-] flathead@lemm.ee 4 points 1 year ago

I choose black.

[-] tigerjerusalem@lemmy.world 4 points 1 year ago

"Hey, you know that fancy AI we're developing? I just had a crazy cool idea to use it for!"

[-] SpunkyMcGoo@lemmy.world 4 points 1 year ago

I haven't seen this but it doesn't seem like a big deal, unless they're spamming you with it. people seem to have a pathological need to be mad about youtube updates tbh

[-] saigot@lemmy.ca 3 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

Idk this seems pretty good for like a reception or something.

[-] FlyingSquid@lemmy.world 17 points 1 year ago

Why would it be? It could easily do things like- purple video of jacaranda flowers in bloom with peaceful music, then purple video of a guy wearing all purple giving the camera the finger while death metal plays.

Color says absolutely nothing about a video's contents.

[-] saigot@lemmy.ca 4 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

It's not just colour it's colour within what the algorithm already thinks is nice. If you only watch 4hour fish tank videos you'll only get 4 hour fish tank videos, just with purple fish. It's not like you have to just play this live either. Just generate the videos and add each non offensive one to a Playlist to run at the office. Sure it's not like a killer feature, I also doubt it took much effort at all to create.

[-] FlyingSquid@lemmy.world 6 points 1 year ago

The algorithm is far from perfect. And how would it know you were planning for a reception and wanted those kind of videos if you normally watched death metal videos?

[-] Pantherina@feddit.de 3 points 1 year ago
[-] dipshit@lemmy.world 3 points 1 year ago

I don’t even want this, and my favorite flavor is crayon!
