Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, Halo, Thief, Heroes of Might and Magic, and Turok.

All things I was incredibly hype for new stuff. All incredible let downs with some more than the others.

Star Wars - Pretty much all previous games and books got retconned out.

Lord of the Rings - Started with the Hobbit and has been downhill since then.

Halo - Halo 4 was okay but everything after that basically changed everything about the lore.

Heroes of Might and Magic - Favorite game as a kid but Ubisoft ruined it and doesn't even make them anymore.

Turok - The reboot is so far from the original they could have renamed the character and just called it something else.

God Thi4f is an obscure pull but with my username I obviously feel the pain on that one.

[-] LeafOnTheWind@lemmy.world 6 points 9 months ago

The Hobbit at least had good moments and is almost salvageable with the fan edits (the last one is pretty rough though)

... isn't Turok already a title passed between multiple dudes?

Players assume the role of Native American space marine Joseph Turok

Well then. At least they narrowly avoided naming him John Gamename.

Lord of the Rings - Started with the Hobbit and has been downhill since then

Technically, the hobbit existed before lord of the rings. It was a story Tolkien wrote for his kids, that he later expanded and continued into lord of the rings. Initially, the ring wasn't a ring of power, just a novel trick. And Gandalf wasn't all powerful, he was an old friend caught up in bilbo's shenanigans.

Now if you're explicitly talking about the movie adaptations, yeah. The hobbit kind of lost its magic compared to the lord of the rings movies.

The Hobbit movies being shit is due to greed and imcompetence by Warner Bros. They knew they had only a small time window to do these movies until the rights reverted and they fired Del Toro who was already deep in preproduction because they thought he was too slow. Which forced Peter Jackson, who rather did it himself instead of Warner ruining it completely, to start by scratch and do the movies under horrible circumstances. Scenes were shot without knowing where they fit in because the script was written during shooting, CG had to be shoddily used because Weta couldn't get practical effects and make-up to work quickly enough. Ian McKellen broke down crying because he had to do whole dialogue scenes in a green screen room alone. The making of also shows Peter Jackson being absolutely exhausted and disillusioned. It seems to have broken something in Jackson too, since he hasn't done any movies except documentaries since.

Yes I was talking about the movies. :)

Loved the Hobbit and LotR books. Had them all when I was a kid and would always reread them.

For HoMM check out Songs of Conquest. Not a 100% match to the old HoMM but it's really good.

[-] Mathazzar@lemmy.world 3 points 9 months ago

Star Wars was always my favorite sci fi universe for so long..

Now with what Filoni and Disney has done with it, i just dunno any more. I feel lost. I loved Andor and Rogue One though, but apparently they aren't the most popular?

[-] corsicanguppy@lemmy.ca 1 points 9 months ago

I loved Solo but fanboys killed that.

[-] Mathazzar@lemmy.world 1 points 9 months ago

My only gripe with solo is that I preferred the EU version of his backstop. More in the imperial pilot thing.

But I had already accepted that there would be new canon.

Thief. How the fuck did they mess up such a beautiful game.

Turok I love but it didn't have a super strong identity to start, so I can see how it went off the rails. Although re-playing 1 and 2, I was surprised that I actually prefer 1 after all these years.

Are you aware of the comic books?

Definitely, but I meant the N64 game

[-] zarkanian@sh.itjust.works 1 points 8 months ago

The comic books came first, though.

Yes, and maybe if they'd taken more style inspo from it, the later games wouldn't have gone off the rails.

Still a couple fun games, though

You may be interested to know that there is an open source engine port of HoMM2 that released within the past year I think. I know many people are big on HoMM3 and lots of nodding work has been done on that game to keep it fresh and playable, but 2 was my entry to the franchise, so the FHeroes2 team deserves my endless thanks and admiration.

[-] TommySoda@lemmy.world 2 points 9 months ago

HoMM2 was my favorite game as a kid. It was my first entry too. I'll have to look into it. Thanks friend!

Plants vs. Zombies. EA bought out Popcap and kicked out the developer after he refused to add monetization to Plants vs. Zombies 2

[-] mindbleach@sh.itjust.works 14 points 9 months ago

And as great a name as "Garden Warfare" is, the entire point of picking plants and zombies was to represent the mechanics. Plants don't move, zombies don't sprint. (Down in back, Snyder!) The game was all blank colored boxes until it felt good to play. Theming was applied on top of that, to humorously convey what those units could do. And couldn't do.

So of course the second sequel is a full-on CoD clone. A full-on rooty-tooty-run-and-shooty spunkgargleweewee affair. Because it's been at least twenty years since EA completely lost the plot.

[-] sharkfucker420@lemmy.ml 2 points 9 months ago

I high key enjoyed garden warfare as a kid, I never owned it but I'd stay up all night at a friend's house and play it. Didn't know they made a sequel

[-] corsicanguppy@lemmy.ca 2 points 9 months ago* (last edited 9 months ago)

[-] mindbleach@sh.itjust.works 2 points 9 months ago

I'm sure it's a fine example of completely the wrong genre.

[-] Toes@ani.social 36 points 9 months ago

Command and Conquer, EA killed it.

I always get excited when I see a new CnC tiberian sun trailer has dropped... but I should know better..

[-] Toes@ani.social 5 points 9 months ago

The original version lives on.

Fallout. Look what they did to my boy. We could be getting a Baldur’s Gate 3 style fallout, but noooo. Todd had to go and screw it up for everyone.

[-] Jake_Farm@sopuli.xyz 2 points 9 months ago

Todd ruins everything he touches. The only exception being Morrowind. And I have my suspicions about his actual involvement in that.

[-] wintermutehal@lemmy.world 1 points 9 months ago

Preach! If you want a good laugh, check out the song by the YouTuber Grimbeard titled Todd has a plan for us all.

[-] Jake_Farm@sopuli.xyz 2 points 9 months ago

I prefer "It Just Works" by The Chalkeaters.

[-] Tattorack@lemmy.world 22 points 9 months ago

Quite literally the current state of Star Trek.

The future of humanity is supposed to be a post scarcity utopia where people don't care about material gain, or at least where material gain isn't the goal anymore, but the current writers have been trying to... reduce that idea.

Several characters, Seven of Nine specifically, have been regressed rather than developed. Turned into something shallow.

[-] SpaceNoodle@lemmy.world 16 points 9 months ago

You destroyed it with a cannon?

[-] corsicanguppy@lemmy.ca 4 points 9 months ago

OP can't spell canon?

[-] jol@discuss.tchncs.de 3 points 9 months ago

That's probably what EA calls the process of destroying beloved franchises.

[-] Jake_Farm@sopuli.xyz 2 points 9 months ago

Prey, the remake had nothing to do with the original. NOTHING! And in the original you played a Native American man who grew in ability by reconnecting with his ancestors to fight child eating aliens! How do you not make a sequel to that?
