I do this for a few things, movies in particular. For me most recently, I'm planning on watching Bo Burnham's Inside this weekend, for the first time since I watched it shortly post-release. I wasn't really intending to wait *checks watch* nearly 3 years on that one, but I definitely felt it needed some space before a rewatch.

Anyone else treat certain pieces of media similarly?

No, I go full throttle until I'm sick of it.

  • [game] Donkey Kong Country 1/2/3
  • [anime] Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood
  • [anime] Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann

The games are part of my childhood, and they aged really well, so if I don't stop myself from playing them all the time the muscle memory kills all the joy from playing.

Same thing with the two anime series - I love both but it has been a few years since I watched either.

[-] darthsid@lemmy.world 2 points 7 months ago

Love both those anime!

BACK IN THE 90S I WAS IN A VERY FAMOUS TV SHOW

Now I wait until Christmas before allowing myself to watch Die Hard.

LEEEEEEEROY JENKINNNNNNNNS

I'm not even a WoW fan, but as a gamer I appreciate the sentiment.

Most comedy specials, the George Carlin post today reminded me of that. If you listen too frequently they'll lose their punch, and you'll stop listening to what they're saying. Every few years I'll listen to him (and a few other comedians) and it reminds me of everything

[-] mihnt@lemmy.world 11 points 7 months ago

Gotta do a Bill Hicks listen through every few years myself.

[-] Chozo@kbin.social 8 points 7 months ago

Add Mitch Hedberg to the pile, while you're at it.

Oh another one I just thought of. The Mass Effect trilogy.

Used to do it every year and got burned out, now every 3 years or so I jump back in and save the galaxy. Wait - this might be three years this summer!

[-] morphballganon@lemmy.world 1 points 7 months ago

How do the sequels compare to the original?

Few dirty doujins that always get me going, but I try not to use them too often lest they lose their charm

For me it's books. I try not to read The Discworld series too often. Same thing with a few of my favourite books: Jane Eyre, Ivanhoe, Villette, etc. I also try to ensure a long enough gap (few years) between each read so that details of the books become a bit hazy in my mind and I can enjoy my read almost like the first time.

Goodfellas, it’s my favorite movie ever and I want to keep the wonder of the first time I saw it alive as long as possible

[-] Neil@lemmy.ml 8 points 7 months ago

Definitely the band "Heilung."

I refuse to listen to them outside of live at a concert. It's old Nordic style viking goodness and the live shows are more of a ritual than a concert. When I go, I want a full immersive experience and I feel listening to them in between the concerts takes away from the experience.

Pokemon games (red/blue) and Harry Potter novels. I have to wait long enough that I don't remember every detail.

[-] NataliePortland@lemmy.ca 2 points 7 months ago

I’m playing blue right now! I just woke up the Snorlax with the flute. It’s so fun. This time I’m really into Hypno and Dugtrio

Final Fantasy VIII. I want to play it all the time and i wish i could erase the plot from my memory and play it again for the first time.

[-] cloudless@feddit.uk 3 points 7 months ago

I remember the annoying protagonist, the stupid magic draw system, the crippling final dungeon. I don't remember the plot.

[-] WEAPONX@lemmy.world 4 points 7 months ago

I'm not saying it's a masterpiece. It carries nostalgic and sentimental value for me. I like it.

[-] finthechat@kbin.social 2 points 7 months ago

I have the opposite problem with FFVIII. The only thing I remember is:

[-] match@pawb.social 2 points 7 months ago

whoa

can you explain the plot of viii for me

[-] RvTV95XBeo@sh.itjust.works 2 points 7 months ago

Moody teen saves the world with his oversized sword-gun.

Full disclosure, this one is big on the nostalgia for me as well.

[-] southsamurai@sh.itjust.works 6 points 7 months ago

Ehhhh, to a limited extent, Christmas movies. But it's only partly so it doesn't get diluted, it's also because they're kind of meant to be something to make the season a bit happier. They don't work as well outside of the holidays, so why bother?

[-] Varyk@sh.itjust.works 6 points 7 months ago

I replay Morrowind maybe every few years, and I'm able to enjoy it every time I play.

As for movies, I saw barbarian in the theater and I have waited to watch it again even though I loved it, until just last month when I reunited with an old friend who loves weird horror movies, and it was so good. We actually watched terrifier also, and I hadn't seen that in a couple years. It was so much fun to watch those movies sort of fresh with someone I knew would enjoy them, there were parts in both movies that surprised me again.

Lord of the Rings - Battle for Middle Earth. Great game from like 2004; there's a super niche online community that still keeps the games downloadable and in great state.

On a completely different direction, if anyone is bored and wants to try K Dramas, check out Crash Landing on You - it's about a woman who ends up in North Korea after a paragliding accident, and tried to escape.

[-] ApollosArrow@lemmy.world 4 points 7 months ago
  • The first few seasons of Red vs Blue
  • Back to the Future trilogy
[-] Today@lemmy.world 4 points 7 months ago

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. Love it, but i can't watch it too often because it's so exhausting.

[-] kratoz29@lemm.ee 3 points 7 months ago

Toy Story 2 for PS1, I still need to try the Dreamcast version though.

[-] Thorny_Insight@lemm.ee 3 points 7 months ago

Not that I'm stopping myself from going back to it too often but for being such a popular song, Feel Good Inc. by Gorillaz somehow has managed to not lose it's magic on me. I never search for it but every organic encounter in the wild stops me on my tracks and sends chills down my spine. A true masterpiece.

Also shoutout to the Marcus Layton & Nonô cover.

The Orville, Fresh Prince, and Firefly.

Been watching these three shows for many years; still haven't seen every episode of any of them. One episode every few months/years is enough for me.

I fear for the day that I finally finish one of them.

[-] KISSmyOS@feddit.de 6 points 7 months ago

Don't worry, you'll never finish Firefly.

[-] guyrocket@kbin.social 3 points 7 months ago

The Dark Knight movie. Goddamn that is good. Maybe my top film of all time.

LOTR trilligy. I have extended versions on DVD and love them.

[-] spittingimage@lemmy.world 2 points 7 months ago

The book Bridge of Birds by Barry Hughart. Maybe everyone has a book that's just perfect for them. This one is mine.

[-] breakingcups@lemmy.world 2 points 7 months ago

The Shield, what a ride.

[-] elvis_depresley@sh.itjust.works 2 points 7 months ago

Cowboy Bebop (the anime series, not the live action), sadly only one season exists.

[-] Dmtr33d@lemmy.world 2 points 7 months ago

IT Crowd and Peep Show.

[-] FenrirIII@lemmy.world 2 points 7 months ago

The dub of "The Touch" (from the Transformers animated movie) over the scene in End Game where Cap picks up Mjolnir

[-] datavoid@lemmy.ml 2 points 7 months ago

I do this with music.. if one of my favourite nostalgia songs comes on and I'm not driving with the windows down in summer, it's for sure getting skipped!

This makes me realize that I have a huge list of things I should see/do, but have been putting off because I want to enjoy them at their max. Then I find myself never feeling ready enough. Some of the ones from this thread I’ve been meaning to check out for years:

  • Inside
  • Bojack
  • the video “Leroy Jenkins”. I have no idea what it even means, but I’ve seen references to it for well over a decade.
  • Halo: Reach
  • ME: Legendary, I did download this one a couple years ago, so I’m further on it than anything else
  • Firefly

Anyway, the ones I try not to oversaturate are the best episodes of Always Sunny in Philadelphia. Particularly Charlie Work, which I’ve only seen once.
