I'd be keen to set up or support a Wellington community on the NZ lemmy :)

Hey, so we are currently less than 100 users so having users create communities is currently disabled. For most things, other communities on the Lemmyverse are a better fit.

However, location-based ones make a lot of sense. It sounds like you'd like a Wellington one. Anyone else want a region specific one?

I'm on another instance but I'd love to see an Ōtautahi one!

I know I'm way too late, but seeing people ask for Otautahi makes me wonder if it would have been heckin cool to have Te Wai Pounamu, te whanaganui a tara and so forth for our regional stuff

We can't change the URL but I'm pretty sure I can change the displayed name if there's agreement. i.e. it will always be !southisland@lemmy.nz (unless we create a second community), but we can make the displayed name say something different. This is probably actually good for searching anyway.

Did you want to create a post in !southisland to see what the general consensus is?

[-] batwingnz@lemmy.nz 2 points 1 year ago

Thanks for that, I've shared in Southisland , and also Wellington since that's my local.

I second something for Ōtautahi, the r/chch subreddit was handy.

Can we get a community for Australia ?

[-] z2k_@lemmy.nz 2 points 1 year ago

You could probably join the one for the west coast

[-] Dave@lemmy.nz 1 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

It probably doesn't make sense to do that on the NZ Lemmy?

You could check out https://aussie.zone or lemmy.perthchat.org

One for either the South Island in general or Otago/Dunners could be neat!

The main NZ-based subreddit that I'm missing though is the NZ Medicinal Cannabis one, any interest in replicating something like that over here?

[-] Ozymati@lemmy.nz 3 points 1 year ago

Wait till there's more users here. Otherwise it'll just be you in there.

[-] quirq@lemmy.nz 3 points 1 year ago

I'm in Dunedin, so would subscribe to that one too ;)

I don't want to step on @Dave@lemmy.nz 's toes as he seems to have given this instance much thought.

I did spin an instance up that I am now thinking to push more in an environmental / wildlife space eg New Zealand Wildlife

I had also created Trees - I think that may need either lots of moderation or none

I actually just stole someone else's thoughts :P

I'm happy to point Trees type traffic to your community if you're wanting to build that up. However, I'm not sure that /r/trees was quite the same as an NZ medicinal cannabis one. @cnnrduncan@beehaw.org am I right that you're thinking of something a bit different to an /r/trees style sub?

[-] BlueEther@no.lastname.nz 4 points 1 year ago

Hi @Dave@lemmy.nz

As this is a completely new new community to build then why not build c/trees as a medical or life affirming space.

I'm not a user of /trees for rec. or medical use but do see it's use as beneficial for many reasons (and shrooms)

[-] Dave@lemmy.nz 3 points 1 year ago

If you're willing to drive this then I'm happy to support you in building your community. We can avoid a community like that here and point people to your community.

I'm wondering if we need some sort of wiki like reddit has, to help people find what they are looking for. Perhaps a pinned post to start with, but I feel eventually we will need a wiki (I don't think Lemmy has this, but there are plenty of options we can host to fulfill this need - with the caveat being I don't know of an option that will let you use your fediverse account to edit).

@cnnrduncan@beehaw.org @jennifilm@beehaw.org @cloventt@lemmy.nz Do you think the separation of Ōtautahi and Otago would be prudent or is a combined south island one ok? Maybe while there aren't many users, start with one for the south island, then split it up if it gets too hard to manage together?

[-] cnnrduncan@beehaw.org 5 points 1 year ago

I reckon starting more general with a South Island one and creating more specific communities if/when there's enough of us to actually justify it is a pretty good idea!

[-] z2k_@lemmy.nz 5 points 1 year ago

I'd say start with a South Island one until there are more users. I'm also based in the South Island so keen to join if it's available.

Kia ora @Dave@lemmy.nz any chance we can get a Tāmaki Makaurau | Auckland community set up?

[-] Dave@lemmy.nz 2 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

Sure! I'm surprised it took so long for someone from Tāmaki Makaurau to show up!

[-] terraborra@lemmy.nz 2 points 1 year ago

Tu meke! Yeah it was starting to feel a bit lonely with all the love for the other regions, but it’s early days.

[-] jevon@lemmy.nz 2 points 1 year ago

Awesome! (I was the creator of /r/palmy back on the R-site but I don't live there anymore 😅)

[-] Dave@lemmy.nz 4 points 1 year ago

I've created !wellington, no sidebar or icon or anything yet but you should be able to post to it :)

[-] Fizz@lemmy.nz 2 points 1 year ago

If I want to create a community on another instance do I need to host my own instance or make an account on that instance?

[-] luthis@lemmy.nz 1 points 1 year ago

I was going to ask for one for Kava, but I found one here: https://lemmy.nz/c/kava@lemmy.ml
