This joke doesn’t work, aussies don’t call it a check, they call it a bill.
What an absolute legend. Give him a medal.
It’s a cool name, but I agree its too long for a street. Would make a good name for a park or a reserve or something in the area. To me an ideal street name is around 2 or 3 syllables. “Acacia” is a pretty crap name too though, better to pick something with a connection to the land and the people.
They mention they’re arranging a hui so hopefully a decent compromise can come from that.
If you’re getting that worked up about mild non-offensive inane comments I hate to imagine how worked up you get using a self-checkout machine. Chill out.
Such a great policy for so many reasons. Equitable access to dental care for everyone leads to significantly improved health outcomes overall.
I'm in the keep cats indoors camp. Cats live longer, healthier, happier lives if they're kept indoors. We expect other animals to be kept confined to their owner's property (dogs, cows, sheep, lizards, birds, etc) so I don't see why that expectation should not extend to cats.
Given the enormous damage they do to our native ecosystem I think it makes sense. Feral cats are a pest and currently eradication efforts are hampered because we have to take measures we aren't indiscriminately killing pet cats along with the feral ones. If all pet cats could be expected to remain under owner's control, then the options for eradicating the pests go up a lot.
First step though is to require cats to be micro-chipped and registered, just like dogs are.
Good lord, you may have just changed my life.
I’d support that move - they seem pretty ok with extremist content. https://web.archive.org/web/20230627111421/https://exploding-heads.com/post/92139
He must be spending heaps of time here to learn how to hold it that long.
Not really bothered what happens over there now. I’m no longer invested in their community. Yeah I’ll be poking my head back in over there occasionally I think, but lemmy is scratching my itch for scrolling and doing it in a way that seems less harmful to my spare time and mental health.
My reddit protest consisted of:
- deleting all 10+ years of content and comments I’ve contributed over there
- making an account here and supporting an alternative service
I’ve already opened a google link to something on reddit only to find it was deleted by the user. So I think the withdrawal of content is going to have a lasting impact.
Ooo yay, subreddit drama, it’s like I never even left!
Generally I think:
- public figures are fair game for criticism or comment
- “public figure” to me means anyone who has been the subject of widespread media reporting by accredited outlets, or anyone who has put themselves on a platform
- hate speech is unacceptable in any form; racism, sexism, homophobia, transphobia, etc
- deliberate misinformation and disinformation should not be allowed
- in addition to sealioning, dog whistles should also not be allowed
Here's a list of example comments and whether I think it should be allowed. Big difference between allowing something to be said and approving of it though, before the pitchforks come out.
- “Christopher Luxon is an idiot”
- personal sentiment about a public figure = mean but OK
- “David Seymour is a fascist prick”
- personal sentiment about a public figure = mean but OK
- “Marama Davidson is a racist”
- personal sentiment about a public figure = controversial but OK
- “Chippy looks like he hasn't finished high school”
- personal sentiment about a public figure = mean but OK
- “Grant Robertson is f***ing useless at economics”
- personal sentiment about a public figure = mean but OK
- “Kyle Chapman is a f***ing nazi”
- true statement + personal sentiment about a public figure = OK
- “Jacinda Ardern is tearing NZ apart”
- personal sentiment about a public figure = OK
- “Gareth Morgan should f*** off and die”
- wishing death on someone = Not OK
- “Jacinda Ardern is a horse-faced b****”
- derogatory sexist remark = Not OK
- “the jab was a bioweapon that contained nanobots”
- factually incorrect disinformation = Not OK
- “lgbt people are child-molesting groomers”
- homophobic hate speech = Not OK
- “it is impossible to change your sex”
- transphobic hate speech = Not OK
- “a woman is an adult human female”
- transphobic dog whistle = Not OK
- “Māori are over-represented in crime statistics”
- factually true statement, not necessarily racist depending on context = OK
- “Maoris are all gang members and dole bludgers”
- racism = Not OK
The only way to deal with this type of content is to remove it, and tell the poster why it was removed. Repeated breaches would indicate the person is acting in bad faith and should be removed from the community altogether with a ban.
I honestly do think you need a list of rules. "Don't be a dick" covers a lot of how we want conversations to be carried out, but there need to be some hard lines in the sand for what things are allowed to be said. For example, slurs can be a type of hate speech, but not always. A recent right-wing dog whistle trend has been to claim "Karen" is sexist anti-white hate speech (to disrupt conversations about privileged white people, and no, it isn't hate speech).
I have my ear to the ground a bit more than most on these things, so I am pretty sensitive to them, but communities can fall apart pretty rapidly when they're allowed. I think a list is helpful to community members to let them know what is acceptable or not, and make it clear what type of conversation the community is accepting of.
