First lady Jill Biden defended her son Hunter Biden against an onslaught of attacks from Republicans in an interview that aired Thursday, saying the barrage of allegations against him has been “cruel.”

“I think what they are doing to Hunter is cruel,” the first lady said in an interview with MSNBC’s Mika Brzezinski. “And I’m really proud of how Hunter has rebuilt his life after addiction. You know, I love my son and it’s had — it’s hurt my grandchildren. And that’s what I’m so concerned about, that it’s affecting their lives as well.”

The first lady lamented the shift in rhetoric in the country when asked about the constant attacks from Republicans against the Biden family, including from former President Trump, who frequently calls President Biden “incompetent.”

“I mean, to look at it, what we used to have, and what the other side, the extremists have turned this country into. I mean, we would never see things like that, say 10 years ago,” Jill Biden said.

My tin-foil-hat theory is that the cruelty is the point, and their long term goal is to make being a Democrat president such a miserable experience that no one even remotely competent wants anything to do with the job.

According to Trump’s legal defense, Biden could have Trump and the entire Republican Congress assassinated without any repercussions. He could assassinate anyone who would vote to impeach him, and assassinate anyone who would vote for someone who would impeach him, and still be legally in the clear, as I understand it.

Fun Fact: Trump's lawyers were arguing the exact opposite of this during his Impeachment.

[-] Wodge@lemmy.world 13 points 10 months ago

Funner Fact: Despite all the nonsense going on, Donny isn't actually going to have immunity, and he's more than likely going to jail, or the US becomes a dictatorship this year.

[-] pearsaltchocolatebar@discuss.online 4 points 10 months ago

My bet is on him stroking out before any of that happens.

[-] lolcatnip@reddthat.com 4 points 10 months ago

or the US becomes a dictatorship this year.

You say that like it's not a thing that can actually happen.

[-] Wodge@lemmy.world 5 points 10 months ago

Oh I am well aware that there is a good chance it happens. It's a shame it's down to some of the most self serving people on the planet (certain members of the supreme court) if it happens or not.

[-] Rolder@reddthat.com 8 points 10 months ago

Just gotta make sure to get a dem majority in Congress too, and then their ability to do stupid bullshit is much more limited

[-] FlyingSquid@lemmy.world 46 points 10 months ago

All I know is that with all the Republicans have revealed about him, I am definitely not voting for Hunter Biden in 2024.

[-] Laughbone@lemmy.world 36 points 10 months ago

Idk I’d probably still vote for Hunter over any republican.

[-] BakerBagel@midwest.social 9 points 10 months ago

Hunter Biden is still a sleeze bag with a lot of issues and skeletons on his closet, same as every other rich and powerful failson.

[-] FlyingSquid@lemmy.world 23 points 10 months ago

And yet he'd be unlikely to vote to end social security or put prayer into schools, so I'd vote for him over any Republican too.

[-] lolcatnip@reddthat.com 11 points 10 months ago

But not a Republican. Being a Republican is much worse.

[-] thefartographer@lemm.ee 8 points 10 months ago

That sounds like some leftist speak to base decisions on information. Fuck you, commie! Hunter Biden '24! Make America Biden Again! #MABA #librulsarepoopieheads #clownmakeup

“I think what they are doing to Hunter is cruel

I mean, it is because he's being politically targeted for who his family is...

But also, you'd hope this would make the Bidens more progressive on addiction as a whole. Doing stuff like legalizing cannabis to separate it from the black market, going after opioid manufactures and hard drug traffickers.

Lots of people in America have trouble caused by drugs. Whether it's legal trouble or addiction.

Hunter might be targeted now because of his connections and wealth, but without them he'd also have run into trouble by now too. So it's hard to really have sympathy.

Rich connected people complaining a family member might face consequences (even when targeted for political reasons) is pretty tone deaf.

[-] tacosanonymous@lemm.ee 11 points 10 months ago

The phrase is "tone deaf."

[-] givesomefucks@lemmy.world 7 points 10 months ago

Thanks, no idea why someone would downvote you for pointing it out tho

[-] thefartographer@lemm.ee 4 points 10 months ago* (last edited 10 months ago)

Oh yeah??? I'll show you how to downvote a comment. Starting with my own!

Edit: who TF upvoted me? Fucking trolls...

Downvoting & blocking the fascist symp cheerleading for Old Three-toes immediately makes the thread better.

[-] DessertStorms@kbin.social 4 points 10 months ago

She must not have been paying much attention in all her years in DC - the cruelty is the fucking point.

[-] osarusan@kbin.social 3 points 10 months ago

I love threads like this because they're basically just roll-calls for trolls to add my block list.

This is the best summary I could come up with:

Her interview aired a day after House Republicans voted to advance a contempt of Congress resolution against Hunter Biden, teeing up a full House vote and the potential for criminal charges for the president’s son.

The White House has repeatedly denied the president was involved in his son’s business dealings.

House Republicans have repeatedly focused on Hunter Biden’s business deals as part of the inquiry into the president.

Hunter Biden was central to GOP attacks during the 2020 election, when the Trump campaign zeroed in on the contents of an old laptop that contained graphic images of the president’s son.

Hunter Biden is also facing federal tax charges, as well as charges for lying in October 2018 on a federal form for gun purchasers when he swore at the time that he wasn’t using or addicted to illegal drugs.

The president has repeatedly said he is proud of his son and has noted Hunter Biden has been open about his struggles with addiction.

He is not her son. Just saying.

[-] Jaysyn@kbin.social 36 points 10 months ago* (last edited 10 months ago)

I refer to my step-children "sons" & "daughter". They call me "Dad".

This just makes you look pedantic & pathetic.

[-] IamRoot@sh.itjust.works 3 points 10 months ago

Also, you are arrogant for doing so.

[-] Jaysyn@kbin.social 11 points 10 months ago
[-] IamRoot@sh.itjust.works 2 points 10 months ago

If they are adults and asked you to call then son or daughter that is ok. But if they are children then you are arrogant for asking them to call you that.

[-] Jaysyn@kbin.social 19 points 10 months ago* (last edited 10 months ago)

I never asked them to call me anything. What's it like being such an unloved little troll?

[-] IamRoot@sh.itjust.works 3 points 10 months ago

Of course you didn’t. Arrogant.

If they are adults and asked you to call then son or daughter that is ok.

So you admit that it's a personal matter that is none of your business. Maybe Jill and Hunter had that conversation at some point during the last 45 years and didn't bother to consult you about it.

Next, you will say that your step children are “OK” with it. Like they have a choice.

[-] Jaysyn@kbin.social 25 points 10 months ago* (last edited 10 months ago)

LOL, triggered much, clownshoes?

Three of them are adults, they can call me whatever they want. Guess what they call me?

Sorry no one loved you growing up.

That doesn't mean she can't think what they're doing to him is wrong, just saying.

[-] IamRoot@sh.itjust.works 2 points 10 months ago* (last edited 10 months ago)

Just saying that she is saying that he is her son and he is not.

If you read the article.

[-] Arcane_Trixster@lemm.ee 26 points 10 months ago

Throw that on the pile of impeachable offenses then, I guess?

A stepparent can call their spouse's children their own. That's not a lie or a gotcha moment.

What is the purpose of you pointing it out? Do you have an agenda or are you simply a pedant?

[-] pearsaltchocolatebar@discuss.online 3 points 10 months ago

It's a troll
