Who tf keeps their phone off dnd at night? The last thing I want in the middle of the night is to be woken up by some email spam.

That said I have a rule set up which allows calls to go through if they are from my favorites list, just in case they're dying.

[-] Bruce_Wayne@lemmy.world 37 points 2 years ago

Same. If it's an emergency and you're not on my favorites list then you should really be calling someone else

[-] Koof_on_the_Roof@lemmy.world 14 points 2 years ago

Well I guess there’s no point keeping the batsignal then 🤷🏻‍♂️

[-] Bruce_Wayne@lemmy.world 3 points 2 years ago

Gas for the batmobile hurts even my wallet

[-] nepenthes@kbin.social 8 points 2 years ago

There is also an exception for if the same number calls you twice within 15 minutes. That way if a loved one is calling from a different number it will still get through.

@LimitedWard @B4tid0 Ive worked in IT for decades. DND after 10p CST is the only way I get sleep and if they are dying, there sure af nothing I could do about it, naked at 2:30am and just woken up.

[-] LimitedWard@lemmy.world 3 points 2 years ago

Oof are you effectively always on call until 10pm every day? I have on call rotations with week long 24 hour shifts, but luckily I only have to deal with it every 2 months. Having daily late night calls just sounds dreadful.

[-] BigMcLargeHuge@mstdn.social 2 points 2 years ago

@LimitedWard
I manage IT teams/departments, and while there are middle managers, to quote an old MST3K line,

"*mutters* There's always something with this tribe..."

[-] Kyle@lemmy.ca 10 points 2 years ago

Basically people that complain about getting calls late at night are admitting they aren't very savvy with their phone. DND call settings are a life saver.

call settings in do not disturb mode

[-] GeminiFrenchFry@lemm.ee 8 points 2 years ago

Same. All text messages and notifications are silenced, but calls from favorites or calls that call more than once in 15 minutes come through.

DND is my life, especially as a light sleeper.

[-] Zoidsberg@lemmy.ca 5 points 2 years ago

If they're dying I probably can't help them anyway. Call an ambulance. Let me sleep.

[-] I_Miss_Daniel@kbin.social 4 points 2 years ago

Same.

I'm also active on WhatsApp though - the only way I could get that bastard to honour DnD was to turn off all its notifications, and use Alertify to play a sound for certain silent notifications.

[-] Talaraine@kbin.social 4 points 2 years ago

This is the only answer and you figure it out quick if you're a light sleeper. If I get a call in the middle of the night, I know that it's important, full stop. The rest can burn.

Phone never leaves silent mode. The phone comes out of the box, the switch is put down to silent mode, embrace the orange line.

This picture is pure anti-antiwork

[-] Tolstoshev@lemmy.world 1 points 2 years ago

They might as well just epoxy mine to the off position at the factory.

[-] ThrowawayPermanente@kbin.social 22 points 2 years ago

If it's a real emergency you should be calling 911, not me.

[-] Anticorp@lemmy.world 15 points 2 years ago

Phones have sleep schedules. Set it up and it will automatically shut off blue light 2 hours before bed and then shut off notifications and ring tones at bedtime. You can even set it up to allow certain people through, or allow repeat callers to ring, in case something really hits the fan and you're really needed.

[-] CurlyMoustache@lemmy.world 3 points 2 years ago

I have extra scheduling for my work-apps. On weekdays at 16 they all go into do not disturb mode. During the weekends they get turned off completely. My time is my time

[-] Anticorp@lemmy.world 4 points 2 years ago

I take that a step further and refuse to install any work oriented apps on my phone. My phone, my prerogative.

[-] CurlyMoustache@lemmy.world 2 points 2 years ago

The bought my phone and they pay the bills. But still: when I'm done for the day, I'm done

[-] rockerface@lemmy.world 2 points 2 years ago

I have silent hours/weekends set specifically for my work chats and apps. If it's friends or family, I don't mind, but miss me with the overtime shit

[-] Kekzkrieger@feddit.de 15 points 2 years ago

If anything requires urgent attention in the middle of the night you should be calling emergency services and not me.

Mum be like : "But what if grandma died", well she will be just as dead tomorrow morning.

[-] Nausiyan@lemmy.sdf.org 15 points 2 years ago

Pfft I'm on DND 24/7/365/eternity. I get to it when I get to it. I don't care to have to look at phone every 30 seconds on everything.

[-] Screwthehole@lemmy.world 12 points 2 years ago

D&d at night is the right move, but enable second calls for favourites and favourite your loved ones. Then tell them if it's late and an emergency, call me twice.

Nobody else gets through, but you're reachable in a life or death situation. It's the only sane solution

[-] lambchop@lemmy.world 10 points 2 years ago

There's a dungeons and dragons setting for your phone?

[-] Mythril@lemm.ee 2 points 2 years ago

Caller need to roll a natural 20 to get through

[-] parachute@lemmy.world 6 points 2 years ago

Is this possible on android?

[-] kylegordon@lemmy.world 2 points 2 years ago

Absolutely, it's been a core feature for years. This is what part of the config looks like on mine

I always have my phone on vibrate only. A year ago, there was a fire in my grandma's apartment complex and she had to evacuate, so she called me at like midnight asking if she could stay with me.

The buzzing and the light woke me up, despite the lack of ringtone.

[-] Bunnylux@lemmy.world 10 points 2 years ago

I'm not gonna wake up out of a dead sleep because someone's calling off work.

[-] AnyProgressIsGood@lemmy.world 10 points 2 years ago

I turn my phone off every night.

[-] lime_red@lemmy.world 6 points 2 years ago
[-] glorious_albus@lemmy.world 10 points 2 years ago

Fuck that. I put my phone on airplane mode when I sleep.

[-] riesendulli@discuss.tchncs.de 9 points 2 years ago* (last edited 2 years ago)

“only thing wakin me up is a plane crash“

[-] ilickfrogs@lemmy.world 9 points 2 years ago

I have all notifications and ringtones turned off at night but whitelist specific numbers to ALWAYS ring regardless of time/silent settings specifically for emergencies.

[-] tnomrom_haroj@lemmy.world 7 points 2 years ago

I started actually turning it off a few months ago. It felt.... weird at first. Now.... Ahhh, so nice.

[-] Subverb@lemmy.world 7 points 2 years ago

I'm a 58 year old man. With my parents dead, there's only three people on earth that I would get out of bed for and two of them live with me.

[-] I_Miss_Daniel@kbin.social 3 points 2 years ago

For them, use a cordless doorbell instead. One button on their bedside table is all they need to wake you for help.

[-] Usernameblankface@kbin.social 7 points 2 years ago

Do not Disturb with my closest people set as exceptions so it will only ring if they call.

[-] Llamajockey@lemmy.world 2 points 2 years ago

Additionally your can set the number of times they have to call before it even goes through , at least on Android

[-] Usernameblankface@kbin.social 2 points 2 years ago

Oh, this is useful.

[-] LeaHabbel@lemmy.world 6 points 2 years ago

I have my phone on silent the whole day. And sleep mode during the night

[-] Prethoryn@lemmy.world 6 points 2 years ago

Android, not sure about iOS as I haven't used an iPhone in years, easily has the most powerful DND customization. I have a favorites list that makes it so some people can call and text me if it is an emergency. I can allow pass through at certain times and I think I can even pick the apps that I can receive notifications through. I can set text and phone calls as separate things.

Others should take the time to customize their DND.

[-] Prandom_returns@lemm.ee 6 points 2 years ago

Protip: just disconnect from the internet. That way you can still get emergency calls.

[-] Otakat@reddthat.com 2 points 2 years ago

On Android for sure but I'm sure on iOS too you can set specific phone numbers to specifically ring your through silent/dnd. I have that set up for my elderly father.

[-] daellat@lemmy.world 1 points 2 years ago

Can do that on Android too

[-] Hexagon@feddit.it 1 points 1 year ago

My phone is silent all the time, and on airplane mode at night. How evil am I?
