Anyone remember Ringback Tones?

[-] redcalcium@c.calciumlabs.com 12 points 1 year ago

Why pay money to hear music when someone calls you when you can pay money to make someone who ~~bothers~~ calls you hear shitty music?

[-] Ducks@ducks.dev 8 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

"Please enjoy the music while your party is reached" followed by the audio equivalent of a jpeg

[-] Venutianxspring@lemmy.fmhy.ml 8 points 1 year ago

I was never cool enough to have them, but I always thought they were neat lol

[-] Holzkohlen@feddit.de 6 points 1 year ago

I paid for that crap. Had a friend call me to listen to some song. Had to convince him that it does not cost anything as long as I don't pickup.

Ok this is embarrassing but as an old person, how does one get ringtones on an iphone when I only use streaming music services so can’t use an itunes library?

[-] ceeg@lemmy.world 4 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

the iTunes Store app on your iPhone should let you buy ringtones! in the … /More menu at the bottom, then "Tones".

edit: good god the selection there is bottom of the barrel. good luck!

[-] Vag_of_Honor@lemmy.world 4 points 1 year ago

In the iTunes app click the [… More] on the bottom right and select Tones. To set them open the settings app > sounds & haptics > ringtone (there’s also a link to the tones store in there)

There’s also a ton of apps/websites where you can download a larger variety and even make your own, like Zedge (searching ‘ringtone’ in the app store finds a ton)

[-] ProvokedGamer@lemmy.ca 3 points 1 year ago

There’s also a way to do it for free but it takes like 5ish minutes rather than a few seconds. It involves using the garage band app so you can probably find a tutorial on YouTube. Otherwise, just follow what everyone else has been saying to but it if you don’t wanna do that.

[-] Kolanaki@yiffit.net 5 points 1 year ago

I discovered phone hacking with my first phone because the T-Mobile version of the Sidekick in the US was hot garbage when it came to the openness that originally led me to want the device in the first place. I was never willing to pay for something I could have easily downloaded/uploaded to my phone for free.

[-] InputZero@lemmy.ml 3 points 1 year ago

Oh man, I was the first kid on my block to figure out how to replace a rigntone file with whatever that program was. Felt like a legit haxor until everyone else realized how easy it was.

[-] ki77erb@lemmy.world 4 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

*Deleted because fuck me a meme community is probably not the place to talk about anything serious.

[-] dandroid@dandroid.app 14 points 1 year ago

I'm 30 and paid 99¢ for a ringtone in 2005. Most 30 year olds cannot own property.

Yeah house prices have raised dramatically in the past 10 years

Great investment. That's the problem.

[-] TrontheTechie@infosec.pub 5 points 1 year ago

You probably got downvoted for saying that the thing that is necessary to exist in the world today without having to constantly deal with legal or systemic troubles related to homelessness is a good investment.

I doubt anyone was offended by you saying you get paid to take pictures of houses.

I’m guessing you have never had to deal with the dependency hell that is existing as a homeless person in a country like the US.

Did you know that if you don’t have an address in many states that you are unable to get a license or ID? Did you know that if you don’t have an ID you are ineligible to work in the United States? Did you know that you could try to establish your ID again by getting your birth certificate and SS mailed to you if only you had an address? Did you know that the advice to get a P.O. Box is only useful if you have two forms of Identification 1 photo, and 1 non-photo?

As someone who is queer and had to escape an abusive situation with my parents I am intimately familiar with the invisible pit falls that homelessness causes people and how the entire system has been designed to make you a 3rd class citizen, if you can even prove your citizenship at all.

[-] TrontheTechie@infosec.pub 3 points 1 year ago

We can look at this two ways, either you are wildly out of touch with your advice and don’t realize it when you saythings like “Actually it’s cheaper to own than rent, maybe ya’ll should talk to a mortgage broker and start investing” as if it’s some new revelation none of us have thought about with the millions of dollars of advertising telling us to take on a credit pull and try getting a mortgage anyway because “you never know” and how “rocket mortgage makes it easier than ever” or we can say that everyone else is out of touch because they just didn’t think to even TRY.

The first option offers no harm or harsh judgement to anyone, the second option has you as some sole arbiter of financial understanding while everyone else is just too incompetent to talk to a banker or apply for a loan and would rather squander their money trying to survive instead of building equity.

I figured you would appreciate understanding why what you said took a hit, especially considering your “looks like Reddit finally moved in” deflection taking the blame from you, and putting it on some brain dead hive mind to save ego.

Please don’t take this as an attack. I do appreciate the thoughtful response from you.

[-] ki77erb@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)
[-] TrontheTechie@infosec.pub 3 points 1 year ago

I didn’t imply people were incompetent, I just said in as few words as possible that they lack the skills or experience to do what I did, and I’ll point them in the right direction by giving them the literal baby’s first step of go talk to a banker just in case they hadn’t thought of that yet.

Sure…

Incompetent: not having or showing the necessary skills to do something successfully.

Anyway, as much as I’d like to split hairs over the difference between an implication and a subtextual inference I don’t think there is any value in this continuing.

I hope you have a good Friday.

[-] TrontheTechie@infosec.pub 3 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

Yeah sure, you started off the thread with the condescending “actually, it’s cheaper to own than rent, just talk with a banker” we get all the way to the bottom where you tell me how I’m supposed to interpret your words, and when I’ve had enough and decide to point it out to you and draw the line around it to highlight to you where you did in fact imply XYZ, instead of saying something like “I didn’t mean to imply… I should be more careful with my wording” you tell me I’m condescending to you and being rude and insulting you, again, to save your own ego. After all, the fault can’t be you, it has to be external.

Edit: they tucked tail and ran, blamed it all on “trying to be serious in a meme community” as if everyone was replying to them with copypasta’s and jokes instead of serious rebuttals to their whining about downvotes.

[-] ki77erb@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

I didn't "tuck my tail and run away" I deleted my comments because arguing with someone who attacks people for offering advice and then says "please don't take this as an attack" is pointless and futile. I tried to be kind and respectful to you but you're a condescending asshole and you think by psycho analyzing me you can make yourself appear superior. Good luck with that.

[-] TrontheTechie@infosec.pub 3 points 1 year ago

Attacking people? What are you even on about? Where in this whole thread did I attack you? What did I do?

Did I tell you you have such shit for brains ISIS would pray to god for 100 more of you so they could make a desert oasis from the manure after the beheading? Did I tell you you are less useful than a paper bag from McDonald's, because at least you can get the food back out from there? I know, I must've insulted you and your mom by saying she paid the hospital to NOT put you on her chest after the delivery! Maybe I said you had as much utility as a screen door on the titan sub? Fuck off with this victim mentality bullshit.

Psychoanalysis? What psychoanalysis? What Mental Illness do you think I think I'm 'helping' you with? Am I helping you resurface repressed memories and work through trauma?

You say this is all pointless yet here you are again, after you totally didn't tuck tail and run and delete all the thread, but instead deleted it because arguing with me was pointless, but here you still fucking are. Having to get one more word in the argument because you totally didn't run away, you're just tired of arguing now, but have to let everyone know you in fact didn't run away, you very bravely stood your ground with this one last defiant message to the big ugly meanie.

If you had a modicum of self reflection you wouldn't even be here anymore, but then again the thread would've ended when you bragged about buying a house 10 years ago, got downvoted to oblivion, then had someone tell you "Yeah house prices have raised dramatically in the past 10 years". You could have reflected back, said, you know, maybe it is quite different a decade later, maybe I don't quite know what these people are struggling against. Instead you keep doubling down, and keep doubling down, until finally someone had to call you on your mental gymnastics, then you start crying that the big meanie just attacked you out of the blue for no reason.

I bet you can't let this one sit either, but you'll totally not come back to argue, just clarify a point /s

[-] Ubettawerk 4 points 1 year ago

I get what you’re saying. But a lot of people are so used to the “depends where you live” reasoning because it’s obvious.

Housing should be affordable regardless of where you live. But for most people it’s not gonna happen unless you move. People should be able to afford a home where they grew up :(

MULATTO BUTTS!

[-] apj2k36@lemmy.ml 3 points 1 year ago

A little flex, but I just uploaded the songs with some random free programs. Spent too much time personalizing the notifications when it was often on vibrate when in public.

[-] LemmyFeed@lemmy.world 3 points 1 year ago

I have one criteria for my ringtones; is it a banger? Bangers only for when I get a call.

[-] MarcoPolpo@lemmy.fmhy.ml 2 points 1 year ago

This reminds me of a Value Select short lol
