No shit, check the list of countries who cut informations from their people and you’ll easily understand why it causes a backlash.

China, Iran, North Korea to name a few.

Every day, we stray further away from democracy with Macron. Le Pen is gonna win next time and it will be mainly because of him.

[-] rist097@lemmy.world 3 points 1 year ago

Well most of the EU countries including France blocked all media channels from Russia

[-] Holyginz@lemmy.world 29 points 1 year ago

Media channels from Russia are basically just spouting putin propaganda so why would they want to be subjected to that?

[-] rist097@lemmy.world 5 points 1 year ago

Many countries are spewing propaganda bullshit, including and in majority coming from USA. I don't think media channels from USA should be blocked.

Switzerland is doing the right thing, they never blocked any news channel or limiting freedom of speech in that way.

[-] Holyginz@lemmy.world 21 points 1 year ago

Freedom of speech should never be given as an excuse for allowing hate speech, racism, bigotry, fascism or anything else on that vein a platform.

[-] Famko@lemmy.world 10 points 1 year ago

The paradox of tolerance is not taught to as many people as it should be.

[-] rist097@lemmy.world 7 points 1 year ago

The problem comes when you let the government decide what is "hate speech, racism, bigotry, fascism". It gives government too much power to control the opposition by censorship.

[-] Holyginz@lemmy.world 4 points 1 year ago

What, as apposed to corporations and companies like Twitter, Facebook and reddit? Lol

[-] rist097@lemmy.world 3 points 1 year ago

Including corporations, that's why we are all on lemmy, is it not? 😉

[-] FlyingSquid@lemmy.world 3 points 1 year ago

What exactly do you propose to do about hate speech, racism, bigotry and fascism being spread on social media as propaganda, ignore it and hope no one sees it and gets radicalized? We're already seeing people become terrorists after being radicalized by Internet media. and you would have us just hope we're not in the line of fire when it happens again, I guess?

[-] rist097@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

First of all, the USA is not the center of the world, the problems you guys have with mass shooting is not caused by the "hate speech".

And again banning hate speech is just masking the deeper institutional/educational problems you have, not solving them.

[-] FlyingSquid@lemmy.world 3 points 1 year ago

I literally showed you an example where someone was radicalized by hate speech on the internet. Here is another example. I can keep providing them if you would like.

And it's not just an American problem.

Again, should we just ignore that and hope we're not in the line of fire?

[-] chunkystyles@sopuli.xyz 1 points 1 year ago

And again banning hate speech is just masking the deeper institutional/educational problems you have, not solving them.

This is a false dichotomy.

As someone born and raised in the USA, countries elsewhere absolutely should be blocking virtually all of our news media. We're a toxic cesspool of entertainment/propaganda news, with an increasingly deadly end result for its consumers, and those around them.

The agenda of the super rich relies very very heavily on our lying, greed-driven news media.

[-] Jaysyn@kbin.social 29 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

Uh huh.

Please explain how preventing your citizens from using any social media & blocking an openly imperialistic county & known bad actor from propagandizing your citizens are similar.

[-] PenguinJuice@kbin.social 9 points 1 year ago

Spoiler: it is not.

[-] rist097@lemmy.world 4 points 1 year ago

USA is an openly imperialistic country also 😬 . Should we block all media from them?

[-] almar_quigley@lemmy.world 7 points 1 year ago

Imperialism isn’t the reason for blocking. It’s the propagandizing Russia does and the fact they are in open conflict invading another country.

[-] rist097@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago

Interesting, so like the USA is doing?

[-] ryven@lemmy.dbzer0.com 28 points 1 year ago

I thought he wanted less rioting? But go on, cut off social media and see how many riots there are.

[-] FrankTheHealer@lemmy.ml 28 points 1 year ago

It should spark backlash everywhere. Not just France ffs

[-] rockSlayer@lemmy.world 18 points 1 year ago

Scratch a liberal and a fascist bleeds. Fuck Macron. I hope the left coalition can rally and get that fucker out of office

[-] Fried_out_Kombi@lemmy.world 34 points 1 year ago

Unfortunately his main opponent, Le Pen, is a straight-up fascist. France seriously needs better options than him and Le Pen.

[-] mekkagodzilla@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago

Well he's on his last term, and his political party will not survive him. Who knows how the next presidential elections will go?

[-] snipgan@kbin.social 12 points 1 year ago

Macron is going to have an anarchist state if he keeps this up and makes these volatile choices and statements. My gosh.

[-] luna@kbin.social 5 points 1 year ago

Anarchism<3

[-] admin@lemmy.magnor.ovh 10 points 1 year ago

He is not going to stop, people outside France need to understand this. This man, despite his mild mannered centrist exterior, is an authoritarian. He will stop at nothing short of full tilt censorship. Environmental and political activists are being jailed for no reason while fascist groups run amok. This is bad.
