I am curious about how many of the people here were on r/196

If anyone isn't comfortable using google forms here are the questions:

1. Do you use / have used reddit?
   - [ ] Yes, I have and I still use reddit;
   - [ ] I used to, but I stopped after the API shutdown;
   - [ ] I used to, but I stopped for reasons other than the shutdown;
   - [ ] No, I have never used reddit;

2. Are you / were you subscribed to the **195** subreddit?
   - [ ] Yes;
   - [ ] I was but I unsubscribed;
   - [ ] No;

3. Are you / were you subscribed to the **196** subreddit?
   - [ ] Yes;
   - [ ] I was but I unsubscribed;
   - [ ] No;

4. Are you still active on the 196 subreddit (Posting, Lurking, Etc)?
   - [ ] Yes;
   - [ ] No;

5. Are you active on other social media under their equivalent of 196? (Like the #196 tag on tumblr)

I quit Reddit over the API thing but I think it was just momentum keeping me going by that point

I had zero awareness of any 19X subreddits or communities until seeing all the consistently good and relatable memes come up in my feed here on Lemmy.
Still unaware of who or what 196 is here or on any other platform but I'm subscribed here for the aforementioned memes of quality.

I like the 196 on raddle, but I keep forgetting to use raddle

I checked raddle out after the shutdown but i got intimidated by how heavy they were on their privacy, and more recently I've heard that they don't scrub the EXIF data from images and say that you should know how to do that yourself to use the site. Is/was any of that true?

[-] LinkOpensChest_wav@lemmy.one 11 points 11 months ago

The part about EXIF data is true, but they're very upfront about this, and they have a sticky post informing people about this and instructing them how to remove the EXIF data themselves. My take is that it's just a limitation of the site design, it's good that they inform people upfront, and removing EXIF data a useful thing for people to learn how to do regardless.

As far as privacy is concerned, I'd say that yeah -- they're very pro-privacy. You can still connect with people, though. I've met some people on raddle who I've actually chatted with off site. So I wouldn't say it's anything more than the privacy culture here.

The one thing that sometimes turns people away from raddle is that people on the site tend to have very well-read and carefully formed opinions, and they can sometimes come off as being aggressive and confrontative. But even the people who may come across like that at first are actually very empathetic, once you spend more time there and observe how they interact.

I'll just say this: I've personally not seen anything on raddle that would turn me away from using the site, and I've been there off and on since leaving reddit in June.

Although I am subscribed to it here, I only learned about the 196 subreddit during the api shutdown (and through tumblr, actually (apparently the content I post resonated a lot with r/196 refugees at the time)). By that time I was already moving out.

I'm like all Foss now and I never herd of 196 or anything like it till Lemmy

[-] frobeniusnorm@lemmy.world 3 points 11 months ago

Same, tried to disconnect from services from big companies like instagram, reddit, twitter and whatsapp for a long time but this spring i quit twitter (for mastodon), in the summer instagram and whatsapp (for signal) and after the api changes reddit (for lemmy). I miss nothing of it.

You could use cryptpad.fr or something. I'm not touching that link.

i checked out some foss alternatives but i didn't find much, plus i have a personal rule where if any shitpost takes more than 10 minutes i will finish it as fast as possible quality be damned.

Looks interesting tho! I'll keep this in mind for the future
