Ridge Racer the first one already came out, how can you follow up on perfection?

That can be asked for so many genres and series. In general racing games seem to be not as popular any more I guess.

In addition, costs to produce AAA games have really gone up so they have become even more mainstream. And racing game fans generally expect good graphics, so the chance for indie developers with a limited budget to succeed with a racing game is low.

I had this same question recently. The last Ridge Racer I played was awful, absolutely awful. It was a Vita Game and it shipped with barely any content, it was bizarre.

There was a period of time the game consoles launching with a Ridge Racer was actually gaming tradition, it was even a superstition that if you didn't launch with one, the console would fail.

The PSP, Xbox 360, PS3, Vita, and PS2 all launched with one. You can check the dates to confirm.

Ridge Racer is still one of my favorite games, and I loved Horizon Chase Turbo so much I recently picked up the physical Vita release.

I think a lot of it is just, the market changed. People wanted games with licensed cars, either more realistic or way more arcade-y (think kart racers), and the last few RR entries didn’t do so hot, so they packed it in.

It sucks but I can kinda see why it happened. I’d love to see them come back but I think it’s increasingly unlikely from Namco, just because the cost to make one vs the risk is likely to deter them from trying it. That said, I wouldn’t be surprised to see more games in that style in the indie space!

Would love to see those games return. The PS Vita version was a hot mess and a disgrace to the series.

Games like Horizon Chase Turbo have shown that there's still a market for these types of games, and it's possible that the gaming landscape might eventually swing back to embrace the arcade racer style that Ridge Racer excelled at.

As you mentioned, it would be fantastic to see Ridge Racer make a triumphant return and reclaim its status as the premier arcade racer. The formula that made the franchise so beloved is still there, and a modern reimagining could capture the hearts of both longtime fans and new players who crave that fast-paced, adrenaline-pumping gameplay.
