Carney said the equivalent dollar-for-dollar counter-tariffs will focus on sectors such as dairy, steel, household appliances, farming equipment, electronics, and pulp and paper

Early Saturday, the United States imposed 50% import tariffs on $20 billion in Canadian goods.

In response, Canada announced plans to launch retaliatory measures starting Sept. 8, after final talks aimed at easing growing friction between the two long-standing allies broke down.

The duties introduced by Donald Trump impact roughly 5% of Canada’s annual exports across the border, affecting items as diverse as tongue depressors and hockey sticks.

Speaking from Ottawa, Carney stated during a 22-minute address to Canadians, "in the coming days, we will release the details of these new tariff measures, which will come into force the Tuesday after Labor Day."

As an American who had to deal with ICE gestapo in Minnesota (among other Trump bullshit), I fully support Canada's elbows up stance. 🇨🇦

It's absolutely insane how USA is trying to treat Canada as if they were some vassal state.
Canada has been the strongest supporter of USA in just about every relevant situation since before WW2, that's 85+ years now.
Where Canada has supported USA even in wars at great cost. Canada has been a trustworthy ally, and a respectful trade partner for 85 years now. It is not Canada that has asked USA for help, it has always been Canada helping USA!
And this is how USA want to treat their closest friend and ally?

USA is a despicable country, there is zero return of favors, there is zero respect for either law or tradition or for the independence of other countries.

Fuck USA!

probably already stated, but the last minute addition to the usa offer included usa control over Canadian ports, cancel trade deals, give america veto over future trade deals, sole access to rare earths, drop french as an official language.

pretty much everything is to eliminate Canadian sovereignty. No wonder Carney said no.

[-] HerbGrower@slrpnk.net 6 points 4 hours ago

Each of those alone would seem insane to ever accept. Let alone combined. Wtf kind of addition is that

And you know that if they accept it. They would only smell weakness and come back the next week demanding that montreal be renamed Trump City. And the week after that it will be renaming canada to Trumpistan.

theres a lot of traffic in lemmy from americans saying canada is powerless and should just submit. Lets prove them wrong.

[-] deadbeef79000@lemmy.nz 15 points 9 hours ago

Canada should just slap 51% tariffs on and yell "we're tariffing better than Trump".

Repeat until aneurysm.

Another painful war of choice the child rapist president of the USA started for no reason…

Enjoy the day you voted for America, we won't soon forget this curse you released on the World

[-] Flower@sh.itjust.works 4 points 10 hours ago

It's not completely without reason even if it's a stupid reason. Trump wants to be a big player, kinda become the emperor of the western hemisphere. And as usual, his ham fisted way of doing things might yield the opposite.

[-] brave_lemmywinks@lemmy.world 24 points 13 hours ago

The ill I wish upon him and those that voted on him will never be fully realized, and they're too selfish empathize with what's going to happen to those around them.

They won't learn. They can't learn. Their ego is too fragile and too wrapped up in disinformation and nonsense. Accepting that conservative policies are bad actually would break their shitty little minds.

Apart from dealing with these fuckers daily, I have cut ties with family because I'd sooner never communicate with them than be associated with these cunts. It's been years now and I have no regrets.

I don’t understand it, if US citizens have to pay the tariffs why does Canada feel the need to do the same to its citizens.

[-] Corporal_Punishment@feddit.uk 11 points 7 hours ago

Canada is pivoting trade away from the USA. Why buy Teslas when they can buy BYD or Jaecoo from China or BMWs and Mercedes from Europe for instance.

Canada is America's biggest market so any decision by the public to not buy american stuff will potentially hurt american producers more.

Also, American manufacturers rely on Canadian raw materials, so its a double whammy for them.

And all because MAGA still don't get it.

[-] cuerdo@lemmy.world 20 points 10 hours ago

Tariffs are to reduce demand, not to increase evenue. So, if they stop buying our stuff, we will stop buying theirs.

Not looking good at all. According to yesterday's Guardian, negotiations are futile:

"The calamitous collapse of trade negotiations between Canada and the United States is a warning to nations worldwide that pursuing any kind of dialogue with the current US administration is doomed at the outset, according to observers who say this recent episode indicates seeking a fair deal is futile."

[-] Canajan@piefed.ca 8 points 12 hours ago

No negotiations with them will result in any kind of deal, as Carney said, the Orange Turd signs documents in pencil.
