But wait, there's more!

There's about 4 different routes I can take to get to work with roughly a 2 minute travel time difference between them.

Every route has road construction on it right now, with my usual route being completely closed.

I've said multiple times if they put all the crews together on one project, it would probably be done, then they just all move to the next one. Instead, they make 100 teams of 3 guys and have them work on 250 projects at the same time.

...or maybe there's an SCP that looks like an arrow board and a bunch of cones just slowly migrating around the city.

The more people on a crew, the more organization needs to be done to make sure people aren't just standing around waiting for the next guy to get their work done before they can start. It's possible, but it's much more difficult, and you need some great planners to make sure it goes off without a hitch. Manpower-wise it's much easier and more efficient to do a bunch of small crews.

Fuck Flock.

But the cost of road repairs are orders of magnitude more expensive.

My small town entered a contract for 11 flock cameras, and it cost about 65 grand. We also repaved 10 small streets and it cost 8 million.

[-] Olgratin_Magmatoe@slrpnk.net 5 points 9 hours ago

Honestly fuck roads too. We are way too car dependent.

[-] thermal_shock@lemmy.world 4 points 9 hours ago

Maybe look closer into each job, see where the money is going?

I'd also gladly pay for more maintained roads than a surveillance system. If everyone just did their job, we'd already be in a greater situation.

Cops getting caught stalking their exes on flock ststems, trying to track down a guy who picked up $30 he found on the ground? Cmon, let's be real. There are serious issues, but it's always low hanging fruit they go for rather than the jobs that pay the bills, like taxing million/billionaires. Thanks Reagan, you ass hole.

Fix tax loopholes, institute a wealth tax ( no billionaire got where they are without exploiting people), help people, invest in education, NOT the military, who couldn't even find a way to help a ship they stuck at sea for almost a year. We have literal criminals running our government.

I'd rather raise al Capone from the dead and let him have a go, he at least fed the poor with soup kitchens. We're arguing over whether a child should have free lunch like it's the crime of the century. It's unfuckingbelievable the petty shit we have to rule on.

NO child should ever go hungry, I don't give a fuck if his or her parents murdered 100 people.

I went to vote in the primaries recently and flipped off the flock cameras all along the way because it was the first time I’d passed them in a while. I was fully expecting to get a ticket for the double-bird and not having my hands on the wheel. Instead, I went for a walk about a week later to discover all the flock cameras have been removed. My town ended the contract!

They are considering other options, however.. A rose by any other name still triggers allergies.. So I’ll for sure be looking for when city halls are happening. I guess I’ll also be going around town talking to locals about it, same as I did when deflock.me first dropped.

Like 400k kids go missing each year and flock has helped find exactly 0 of them. They can't even be bothered to do some bullshit PR stuff to even pretend it's for "our safety".

[-] MyBrainHurts@piefed.ca 21 points 17 hours ago

As a Canadian, driving or biking on American roads is wild, it's like you're rolling a couple of years after an apocalyptic event.

[-] Grandwolf319@sh.itjust.works 9 points 11 hours ago

As a Canadian I am very mad that they are getting installed here.

Why do we keep importing the worse American behaviour?

[-] Grostleton@lemmy.dbzer0.com 8 points 12 hours ago* (last edited 12 hours ago)

I mean, technically...

[-] MrSulu@lemmy.ml 22 points 19 hours ago

Yes but some people think that the Flock cameras protect them!....... /s

[-] SparroHawc@lemmy.zip 2 points 9 hours ago

I see that sentiment, with zero sarcasm, all over Nextdoor.

How the heck did local neighborhood social media become full of paranoid morons?

[-] 5318008@lemmy.ml 3 points 9 hours ago* (last edited 9 hours ago)

People, generally, are paranoid morons. Calmly processing the facts and assessing risk are the rare exception. Even people who are good at that kind of thing are first making an irrational decision, and then justifying it after the fact.

The solution isn't to fact-check them about Flock having no impact on their safety. The solution is to fear-monger even harder about cameras seeing into their houses, and a private company selling their data to telemarketers.

[-] Sineljora@sh.itjust.works 3 points 11 hours ago

Instead, we’re all under investigation by the authorities for pre-crime indefinitely.

[-] jumping_redditor@sh.itjust.works 3 points 14 hours ago

is the top not the simplest incentive to get people to use public transit?

[-] blackberry28@sh.itjust.works 9 points 11 hours ago

Public transit basically doesn't exist in the US outside of metropolitan areas lol

[-] jumping_redditor@sh.itjust.works 2 points 11 hours ago

yes, and that needs to change.

[-] zarathustrad@lemmy.world 1 points 5 hours ago

Can't even get Internet and power cables buried and maintained, good luck with masstransit in rural areas.

[-] Return_of_Chippy@lemmy.world 8 points 14 hours ago* (last edited 13 hours ago)

My job is 45 miles away from my home. Live on a farm work in a city. I like my job and I like my farm. Also, are busses and carpool vans immune to potholes?

[-] Hazel@piefed.blahaj.zone 3 points 11 hours ago

Trains are immune to potholes.

[-] Return_of_Chippy@lemmy.world 1 points 4 hours ago

I'd still be driving to the train station and then need a ride from the other to work. Unless we put a stop at my front door and my work's.

[-] Hazel@piefed.blahaj.zone 1 points 4 hours ago

The American mind can't comprehend a bicycle.

[-] Return_of_Chippy@lemmy.world 1 points 3 hours ago* (last edited 3 hours ago)

I bring 3 big bags (backpack, gym bag and big cooler) with me to work lmao. 1 clothes/towel/toiletries, 1 tools/computer and 1 food. I work 12s or 18s and shower on site. Mechanical engineer at a power plant. Exclusively public transit for me would be a nightmare.

[-] TheKaul@lemmy.dbzer0.com 5 points 11 hours ago

Too bad there are like 10 trains total in America

[-] jumping_redditor@sh.itjust.works 1 points 10 hours ago

they really aren't, ok maybe I'm thinking of boulder induced potholes
