I have to say i definitely enjoy 1440p and 180 Fps, and i also like Ray Tracing, but they are not the factors that make a game fun. These things only are involved in fun if stable frame rates/frame timings or visual clarity are not reached, detracting from fun - and that can happen regardless of resolution or frame rate if the game is an unoptimized mess.

1920x1080@60hz is good enough. 120hz is nice, but not that important. What's important is a good art direction. Not graphics, art. And as we know, the people making decisions at big companies hate art.

[-] ramble81@lemmy.zip 12 points 14 hours ago

Thank you for saying that. Too many people used to bleat that “144Hz is the minimum I’ll ever play at!”. They went quiet quicker than the 4K crowd, but it all means jack of the art and game isn’t worth it. Hell I’ll take a 30fps JRPG over some of these twitch shooters.

If i never switch to 4k, I can never know what i am missing

[-] Signtist@bookwyr.me 22 points 16 hours ago

That's exactly it. I find most "improvements" do nothing but change my definition of what "normal" is, making the new thing feel just as normal as the old thing did, and making the old thing feel worse, without any real change in my level of satisfaction.

If i have the chance I limit the fps to 60 and 30 if times are tough, I know this is totally unplayable to some

[-] zurohki@aussie.zone 7 points 13 hours ago

4k is better for web browsing and normal desktop use than gaming, IMO. 4k text is beautiful, you actually have enough pixels for fine details to not turn into a blurry mess.

[-] gegil@sopuli.xyz 9 points 16 hours ago

I used high resolution high refresh rate display, compared to my own monitor. I do miss high refresh rate, but dont really care about resolution.

[-] Klear@piefed.world 22 points 15 hours ago

Ray tracing can change how the game plays, though it's rare (mostly Control). Seeing guys coming in a window reflection is awesome.

( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

[-] 4am@lemmy.zip 4 points 14 hours ago

If it was that important as a game mechanic, there were already ways to do that.

If it’s only available if you upgrade to better hardware, it’s DLC that you buy from Nvidia

[-] friend_of_satan@lemmy.world 1 points 8 hours ago

You can download hardware?

[-] bright_side_@piefed.world 3 points 14 hours ago

yeah that's cool, but probably especially in controls case possible with planar reflections

I just went back to SNES for a break and I am thoroughly enjoying it. It is not just nostalgia, as I never played RPGs back when the console was a thing. I don't even know what resolution I get there.

[-] kandoh@reddthat.com 2 points 8 hours ago

Graphics got good enough during the ps4 era and I wish they'd focus more on the way NPCs behave

[-] Visstix@lemmy.world 7 points 13 hours ago

Every time I try that raytracing bs I don't see a difference and my fps drop. Would be nice to go to 4k or whatever, but games keep running worse. So I will stick to 1080p.

[-] TabbsTheBat@pawb.social 10 points 16 hours ago

That path tracing ray tracing stuff never did anything for me tbh. I will say high fps is nice tho :3

[-] 4am@lemmy.zip 6 points 14 hours ago

I don’t think they’re spending a lot of time on it because most people won’t use it or can’t. There is definitely some stuff with it you could do much cooler, but that’s a faction of your market. Devs are optimizing for the top of the bell curve of capability

[-] TabbsTheBat@pawb.social 4 points 14 hours ago

I mean, I think my PC is at around the middle of the bell curve, and I can't say modern AAA games feel particularly optimized for it, lol

But also AAA sucks these days so, im not too fussed about it anyway :p

I want >95 PPI and as large monitor I can get. 60 Hz in most games. A select few 120 Hz. Neat graphics can be cool. But I am happy with performant games with less graphical fidelity.

[-] 4am@lemmy.zip 5 points 14 hours ago

I would take a 60hz game with my 1% lows at like 57hz over a 120hz game with 1% lows at like 10hz

[-] sirico@feddit.uk 4 points 15 hours ago

Old PC sales guy susseptable to being bribed to sell you a PC.

[-] rockSlayer 4 points 15 hours ago

I did video game QA. Ray/path tracing looks good, when the light source occlusion is good. Otherwise you end up with pixelated shadows that look worse than standard lighting

True Unreal Engine 5 experience.

[-] underscores@lemmy.zip 2 points 14 hours ago

1440p is actually quite nice
