I love horror movies but I don't understand how people enjoy true crime. Hearing about terrible things that happened to other people just makes me sad.

It's gotta be like an art vs sadism thing right?

I think there is an interest in trying to understand why people do things that society generally agrees are not acceptable. This sort of dates back to like before written language.

That’s how it is for me at least. Though I will say that a lot of the true crime podcasts is shit and damn near slop, and some even glorifying the murdere.

I like when true crime podcasters eventually come to terms that the police is between inept to malicious and often won't actually solve anything. Sometimes it's the community that solves the crime, sometimes one good apple who insists on it and works against his own superiors. Sometimes the murderer is a policeman, sometimes the murderer is friends with the police. Often the police as an institution just makes a note, sometimes before the crime happens, and ignores it until it becomes too big to ignore. It's ridiculous seeing so many true crime episodes come to similar conclusions about the police. And since most true crime is american due to america's lack of privacy regulations, the way the police treats black people is also insane.

Detective shows are all hyperbole. If the case doesnt fall into their lap, the criminal is getting away. Luckily, most crimes are done by egotistical people who cant help but give themselves away, but there are a lot of unsolved murders that very clearly were done rather sloppily and investigated even worse.

At the end kf the day, a job is a job and not every police department in the nation can afford a Sherlock. He probably works in a scientific field anyways

If I got murdered I hope that every single true crime podcast, tv show and youtube tells my story. Please describe me as full of life and deeply caring. Also cut in some stuff about being gone too soon, and don't mention that I was holed up in my house for months without leaving or speaking to another person before they murdered me.

*before your husband murdered you

I'm going to do a squarespace ad during my selfie-recorded-last-distress-video on my phone just before the killer finds my hiding space, that way my family can afford a funeral for the bits of me he doesnt eat.

My wife watches only true crime and cop shows. I spend my time playing games and online, but this horrifying parade of humans brutalising other humans in the background is getting to me. I feel damaged, like it’s leaving a stain on my soul. Still she loves it, happy wife happy life eh?

I eventually got my ex some really nice headphones because the literally constant true crime (she would literally fall asleep to it) was driving me driving insane.

He was never very good at telling people how he was feeling. He told lies, hurt a lot of people. Some say he even gave them up and deserted them when things got tough. Even those he knew for so long.

"We just couldn't believe he would be capable of this." ~ Everyone interviewed

[-] baguettefish@discuss.tchncs.de 12 points 1 day ago

Some people interviewed: "I saw him kill his own dog and turn him into sausages. I reported him to the police but they didn't care."

[-] Mirshe@lemmy.world 12 points 1 day ago

This is pretty much actually on par for serial killers.

Off the top of my head, Tacoma PD had the Green River Killer in custody a LOT, knew he frequented sex workers, knew he had violent incidents with them fairly often, had a bunch of evidence like paint drops that linked him to bodies and body sites, and several other sex workers had told them that "hey he was the last person I saw with [murder victim]", but Gary Ridgway simply didn't fit the police's idea of a serial killer. The idea was that he had to be suave and hyper intelligent and not this bumbling fuck who screwed up painting trucks for a living.

He took "hot dog" to literally

There are some who treat the subject matter with respect and some who don't.

That is hilarious. Like the emphasis on how the entertainment hinges on her being white
