What utter bollocks. Companies all over the world use DCs including GreenPeace for hosting their websites and internal network infrastructure used by their employees.
Wtf, you really believe days centers are responsible for wild fires? Bro, we have hundreds of years of polluting entities that have caused this. There aren't enough dcs to make a marketable affect on the environment in a large scale yet.
hundreds of years of prep but the spark can still be blamed on a new tech. the problem is that we keep enabling corps and laws that support both the spark and fire loads.
No it can't. So being disingenious.
if you spent decades not cleaning fire load from your land and i come in and start a neglegant fire that spreads, who is to blame? source: am actual firefighter.
stop being so thick. there can be multiple systems at fault here.
Stop calling it AI. It’s not an intelligence.
Well, artificial leather is not actually leather. You just need to draw a little string from "artificial" to "fake".
plintelligence kind of rolls off the tongue but not really
AI as a term is constantly changing when it comes to what we actually consider to be meeting its criteria. When chess playing bots were starting to get really good in the 90s for example, people commonly considered that the pinnacle of AI until they got used to it and started to dissociate from that. Rinse and repeat with LLMs today.
Besides, AI is a field, not necessarily a technology, and the capabilities a computer requires for it to be considered “intelligent” aren’t even remotely similar to that of a human being. You can consider a computer intelligent without it being necessarily illogical.
The context has changed. It’s destroying neighborhoods, property values, home computing, water, electricity bills, etc on a global scale precisely when we’re running low and prices are too high.
That is in no way comparable to a chess bot.
It's intelligence as in mass surveillance.
I prefer that they keep the association with AI. It has been very effective bad press for AI to the average offline person
Some times I do wonder if we're not all trapped in a Captain Planet episode and the pollution centres are here because Heart is still on his evil arc.
CSAM factories
Until the bubble bursts, then serveilence centers
Loot boxes.
It's such a fucking shame, because it is possible to have reasonable data centers. The modern internet and plenty of business tech is built on it. Just basic disaster recovery practice of not having your data immediately on site, you have it on hardware at a data center, potentially mirrored between two physical locations.
But like everything in tech-bro land, the hyper scaling pursuit of infinite growth just fucking ruins it.
Machine learning has been used by the scientific community for fucking decades, but now you get it to vomit halfway convincing text output and everyone starts acting like the infinite money machine has been found.
Fucking unrestrained capitalism ruining everything.
85% of wildfires are caused by direct human ignition.

Ruining everything centers
Maybe "wealth concentrators".
Fuck AI
"We did it, Patrick! We made a technological breakthrough!"
A place for all those who loathe AI to discuss things, post articles, and ridicule the AI hype. Proud supporter of working people. And proud booer of SXSW 2024.
AI, in this case, refers to LLMs, GPT technology, and anything listed as "AI" meant to increase market valuations.
