While I get the point this is trying to make there is a great deal of dysfunction in most of the ways we fight for causes, so we do kinda need to be able to examine our approaches and behavior critically ๐
Yeah, assuming everyone with criticism Hates You and Your Cause is not very productive.
If I could force every online person to understand one fact, it's this. Goddamn we need to understand that...
I'm sure that's how a lot of vegans online think about me but it's actually not true. I support the cause, but not the crazy shaming that happens online about it. Actually had to block a few people over that issue. The last person was practically foaming at the mouth and making loads of assumptions. They fucking hated me for basically nothing. Someone telling people like that their approach is bad shouldn't be viewed in a negative light. That's absolutely the thing they need to be told.
There are a lot of people who flock to social justice issues not because they give a shit about the issue, but they want to feel like they are morally superior to others for being on the right side of that issue. When somebody melts down at constructive criticism like that, it signals to me that they are the latter category and can be safely ignored. You cant make people grow up on the internet, best you can do is block them so you don't have to hear their tantrum
I fully agree with all this. I mean, it is possible that people like that also care about the issue itself, but the way it manifests for them places the priority on feeling superior and it's pretty awful. But yeah blocking is the only answer...
If it helps, I doubt most online vegans think about you at all.
I'm not talking about them then... ?
These are mostly trolls. They don't care what makes you angry, they just want you angry. People are easier to manipulate when they're angry and it's harder to think about the issues they're deflecting from.
Even if this sounds too nuts, it's a better way to look at it anyway. It'll be easier to either make one comment and move on or just block them at the first signs of this type of abuse.
How do you support the cause?
I eat probably 70% less meat than your average American and I try to make conscious decisions to keep that up and even improve on it. I try to promote healthier and tastier veggie dishes at get togethers. Honestly a lot of people probably don't even know vegetables can be as good as they can be so I try to propagate that. I have had two long term relationships with veg women, one a vegan and one (currently) a vegetarian. It may not be apparent to everyone but it actually does take some effort to help support a partner like that in a meat-centric world, especially when traveling to certain regions. I'm not a full vegetarian but at times I've almost been one. I am not saying any of this to brag or make it seem like I'm a saint. I'm just responding to your question -- at the time I meant it actually as the more general "I'm glad some people are vegan because it's generally a moral thing to do". With respect, I hope this question isn't one of those times where anything I say short of being strictly vegan will be dismissed. I initially wasn't going to respond for fear of that kind of exchange, but I decided not to make a negative assumption there.
Honestly a lot of people probably don't even know vegetables can be as good as they can be so I try to propagate that.
Cannot agree more with this. People think I eat bland af as soon as they know I'm vegan. Have they tried indian cuisine once? The spice literally punches you in the face. Sidenote: have you tried tempeh? Wonderful protein source that can be super meaty if done right.
I'm just responding to your question
Thank you for that. To be real: I asked that because I was kind of sceptical seeing your original post being mainly around "how not to be vegan". As a vegan you hear a lot about how not to do it from people that actually just want to eat meat and be left alone that's why I jumped my shadow and wanted to talk to you about the good stuff you do. So again: thanks for your response! And let's keep on fighting for animal rights in our own different ways.
I agree with you about Indian food. So good! It was one of my first steps to weaning off so much meat actually. It did make me realize that spices are so key. And have much more flavor than meat anyhow. I have tried tempeh and I didn't like it but I have suspected it was not prepared well since it was quite dry. I'm a fan of many forms of tofu though.
seeing your original post being mainly around "how not to be vegan".
Well, unfortunately I have had so many more negative experiences with insulting and angry vegans online than I have nice ones. And I do not believe that is representative of how vegans actually are, it's just that angry people sound off online more often than in real life. The kind of comment you didn't see is also one I've made many times-- when I see people shitting on vegans or belittling their concerns, it really bothers me and I push back on that. I try to be objective on this topic because it is really kinda fucked up that people who are trying to do something moral, for good reasons, and hurting no one else, get mocked for it. "Hurr hurr I don't know what they eat, grass or something!?" Is a kind of phrase that irritates me. It's a way of making themselves feel better for not thinking about something uncomfortable, but it spreads the message that everyone shouldn't care about it. Then the flip side of the coin is the last guy I blocked. I don't really remember the full context but I had said nothing other than vegans who shame people aren't helping and the response was rabid and screaming that I "have the flesh of innocent animals stuck in my teeth". There was no curiosity or grace shown, only that if I had an issue with a shaming approach then clearly I'm an evil enemy. Sadly I've had probably over a dozen experiences like that over the years and not nearly as many calm and respectful exchanges. So not because I think vegans are like that was I hesitant to respond to you initially, but because we're talking online, I could easily imagine the next response to be another type I've had several times: "oh so you still eat meat? You're a part of the problem then"
I don't know if I deserve too much credit for the things I do, I've not had a ton of success getting hardcore carnivores to open their minds, but I try on occasion. I did try this weekend. We had some family over and I asked if we might make them vegetarian tacos, which are something my partner and I have made a lot and perfected. They're almost better than the best tacos with meat imo, just due to the right blend of onions veggies and spices. The reception was pretty bad. "What are even in veggie tacos? Oh well so and so isn't picky about vegetables but they don't like mushrooms or onions". Given that the recipe is heavily reliant on both, especially the onions, I dropped it. I don't want people hating the food I make them. Sad to me how picky some people are, and particularly people who are really into meat. And ironically I'm sure they think veg-leaning people are the hyper-picky ones... Then to top it off we decided to make pizza at home and a relative insisted on buying pepperoni. My partner doesn't like meat touching our cutting boards but I didn't foresee an issue. Before I had a chance to clock what was happening, they used the cutting board to cut pepperonis (who does that? they're already sliced, and thin..)? I didn't see that coming and was annoying two fold. It was like it couldn't possibly be a meal without some meat and also it had to be done in an unpredictable way that made my partner uncomfortable... I definitely don't want to push a diet on anyone but Jesus people can we not see how unhealthy the addiction to mass quantities of meat is? Heart attacks "run in the family" and no one can believe it's meat to blame for at least a good bit of it? I don't get it...
This does not help your effect
Most people aren't smart enough to think for themselves and will believe whoever is nicer to them.
That's it. That's the whole game that conservatives are better at.
When someone decides they hate someone else, they'll make up whatever shit they need to to continue to hate them.
Your cause? This doesn't help our cause.
