The problem isn't a lack of feral reverse engineers and crackers. Console protections are like catnip to that crowd. The problem is the starting state is a lot worse.

Windows PE files aren't encrypted (Yes their content may be but the entry point and key loader would still need to be stored as cleartext) and can easily be copied and decompiled. The ability to run debuggers isn't locked behind having an undisclosed zero day or unpatched device. Arbitrary code execution is available by default. And the APIs aren't all NDAed

There are also competing digital market spaces. You can only buy through Sony on PlayStation.

The feral, passionate coders are the true heroes.

My console is offline 95% of the time, behind a slow connection 5% of the time. No physical media would mean not buying any new game. No new games means there's no point in buying the latest console to play new games.

"Do you guys not have internet?"

[-] Hirom@beehaw.org 1 points 10 minutes ago* (last edited 10 minutes ago)

Why would you need to plug a console to the Internet to play solo games?

Connecting mostly bring enshittification: sending telemetry to 3rd party, ads, updates triggering a random time making it impossible to play when powering the console.

[-] HAL_9_TRILLION@lemmy.dbzer0.com 48 points 4 days ago

tbh the wonders of the Feral PC Army include several groups writing console emulators. I am successfully running: Wii, Wii U, Switch, OG Xbox and PS3 emulators as we speak. I understand Xbox 360 and PS4 are also out there, but I haven't got 'round to them yet.

Interestingly, a lot of media for these emulators is just kind of laying around on the internet for anybody to download.

[-] Derpenheim@lemmy.zip 26 points 4 days ago

360 might be the single most buggy emulator I play. Shit runs on thoughts and prayers

[-] ExcessShiv@lemmy.dbzer0.com 24 points 4 days ago

So it the perfect Xbox 360 emulator?

[-] DdCno1@beehaw.org 1 points 2 days ago

Worse than OG Xbox emulation? Last time I checked, it was rough to say the least, with absurd hardware requirements.

[-] lka1988@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 8 hours ago

Which IMO is very odd, considering the OG Xbox is quite literally just an x86 PC and at this point has been cracked wide open.

[-] DdCno1@beehaw.org 1 points 1 hour ago

Common misconception. It's not a PC. Many of the components are close to standard, but their implementation isn't. Lots of proprietary shenanigans going on. It also lacks a typical BIOS, which alone makes it not an x86 PC.

[-] Derpenheim@lemmy.zip 1 points 2 days ago

Honestly, yeah it is. OG Xbox emulator has gotten a lot better, but 360 still has the frame drop issues and a LOT of texture fixing problems. So you can spin the camera in just about any game and the textures are flying at you

[-] SwifferWetjet@thelemmy.club 4 points 3 days ago

We do have decomps in the pipes apparently for those exclusives that keep me hopeful. Fable 2 has one halfway running as of I think a few months ago.

[-] tixooo@lemmy.zip 4 points 4 days ago
[-] lyrial@anarchist.nexus 11 points 3 days ago

It's kinda funny to me because the OG Xbox is what I still use for emulation. Mine has a 2 TB HDD and runs XBMC (what eventually became Kodi). I love that thing and it is still my media server as well. Having to use FTP is a little annoying in the modern day, and it has gotten hard to find disc's to burn to it, but it still runs like a champ.

[-] HAL_9_TRILLION@lemmy.dbzer0.com 5 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago)

Wow that's impressive. The thing was built like a brick. I had one back in the day and had several games (all of which I downloaded and am running for the nostalgia hit).

One game I found I never knew existed is Tron 2.0. I can't believe I never even heard of this game, I would have been all about it. The nice thing about the emulator is it has an upscaler and games in HD are absolutely dynamite, especially Tron 2.0.

[-] MonkderVierte@lemmy.zip 2 points 2 days ago

The thing was built like a brick.

Also flies as well.

[-] HertzDentalBar 1 points 2 days ago

Tron 2.0 is the true sequel to Tron. All others are inferior.

When I was in highschool I was a huge Tron nerd. I actually sanded down my laptops lid and etched TRON in big letters on it, painted it all up in black and blue. Wish I had a picture of it.

[-] morto@piefed.social 62 points 4 days ago

Also, on pc, anyone who wants a physical media are free to create them as they please (assuming no drm or piracy, of course)

I wish it was true for operation Lovecraft, the dev is a complete scammer making more than 100k a year and missing every launch window while making a closed beta game even worse with micro transactions battlepasses, all of it. He even added Denuvo to the goddamn thing because his always online bullshit was easily emulated. The F95 thread has like 1000 pages of discussion of the more than 10 years it has taken for the game to not release.

[-] boringbisexual 1 points 2 days ago

Well that was an interesting rabbit hole to go down

What a weird argument. People preserve all the digital games on consoles, too. The only somewhat fair argument would be that it's slightly easier to preserve games on PC, but really both have their own challenges. On PC you're fighting DRM, on consoles you're fighting the OS security to break in.

The only real excuse for digital only is DRM free, where you can backup your installers.

[-] huey_m@reddthat.com 4 points 3 days ago

The only real excuse for digital only is DRM free

And cheapness. Steam has always gotten away with this because it's just plain cheap. Their distribution costs are way, way less per game and it's easier for them to pass on savings, which I think is a big part of how they can push games for so cheap compared to most phyical media sources.

[-] FoxAlive@lemmy.zip 7 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago)

You need a PC crack to the console so check mate atheist. Edit: also I'm just playing.

[-] abfarid@startrek.website 5 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago)

I'm not just playing, I'm also seeding* eXoDOS and eXoWin95.

for everyone on everything

Every Windows user on every x86-64 PC?

Not post-Windows users using Linux or macOS, the latter of which are ARM64 machines.

So, not everyone and not everything.

Where's the feral passion in getting off Microsoft's tit?

[-] magic_smoke 3 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

Basically every windows games except for a few with kernel level anti-cheat that I wouldn't install anyways runs fine on proton?

Shit fex is making that work for ARM too...

What fucking rock have you been living under?

[-] cerebralhawks@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 2 days ago

I just looked to see if Proton was available on Mac yet. Search results imply "basically, no." I found a 2023 article from Linus Tech Tips about GPTK (Game Porting Tool Kit) which is a terminal thing which uses some Crossover code. This isn't new, but it's not a user friendly solution.

I get that on Reddit, a snarky remark would get you lots of upvotes, and you could later sell the account to advertisers and a lot of people did that, but on Lemmy, votes don't really matter, I think it's just for show. So yeah, cool, you got one over on me. Bully for you. Now do you have a link, or... are you just being funny?

[-] magic_smoke 2 points 2 days ago

Your original comment was about sucking Microsoft's teat.

What the fuck does proton on Mac have to do with that?

Did you think the answer to dumping Microsoft was buying a Mac? Lmao.

[-] cerebralhawks@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 1 day ago

You can move the goalposts with your words, but I can't afford to follow with my wallet, and I don't want to move backwards anyway.

[-] magic_smoke 1 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

JESSIE WHAT THE FUCK ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT?

YOU MOVED THE GOALPOST BY TALKING ABOUT MAC, AFTER I TOLD YOU PROTON FIXES THE WINDOWS DEPENDENCY!?!?

Where's the feral passion in getting off Microsoft's tit?

- CerebralHawks@lemmy.dbzer0.com, 2026

^Those are your words, that's the goalpost I was responding to. Its been stuck in concrete the entire time.

How delusional are you, you think the answer to fixing this was moving from Steve Ballmers nipple over to Tim Cooks? Obviously the answer is a free, community made OS anyone can install.

Not another fucking corporation.

You can move the goalposts with your words, but I can't afford to follow with my wallet, and I don't want to move backwards anyway.

What the fuck does your wallet have to do with this, Linux is free as in freedom and beer.

Also the idea that moving from Mac to Linux is backwards just because your computer doesn't handhold you is a joke. Convenience over function isn't an upgrade, its a crutch.

[-] boonhet@sopuli.xyz 11 points 3 days ago

Wine, Proton, rosetta 2...

Mac and Linux have pretty decent Windows-only game availability.
