I'd wish to be as private in my digital surrounding as possibly. That sometimes means being judged for many things, having to deal with misinformation, false assumptions and the classic: Dumb people who just don't accept things.

While I have lost many contacts of people (or just any withstanding contact to them) and online friends in my digital viscinity, I have heard a lot of downright bull.

Including that reacurrant phrase of people saying: "Why do you want to be more private, what do you have to hide?" And this sentence just bugs me - partly because of the unwillingness to learn and the misinformation (propaganda) companies like Meta share through things like this. While finally deleting my instagram account, I stumbled upon this. (picture) Notice how the title is:

"Privacy on Instagram"

And from the next sentence onward it's just talking about

"safety and security"

of data.

The thing that many people don't get, is that I do like my data with me. And even if my criminal slate is empty, I do not need companies like Meta (and pretty much EVERY other company through selling data) to know all of that. At this point they know more about me than what my dog knows of me.

Yeah, it just pisses me off. Thanks for letting me share a peace of mind.

P.S. I just realised that some of the help center links have NOTHING TO DO WITH ANY OF THIS.

"I need privacy, not because my actions are questionable, but because your judgement and intentions are."

“I need privacy, not because my actions are questionable, but because your judgement and intentions are.”

Ooooo! That's good.

I had that idea in my head forever but never had a short catchy way to put it. Well done!

And ofc it's also not just judgement and intentions of today... but at any point in the entire ass future. Where the data collected today will still be avail to tomorrow's bad judgement.

Pls stop using it in an app. Use it in a browser.

[-] lenocolomo@lemmy.ml 1 points 1 day ago

I don't think that would make that much more difference hence why I deleted it and probably my data too.

The Instagram app tracks you by using some undocumented Android features. In the browser if you have adblocker installed/integrated (like in Firefox/Vanadium/Lion Browser), it can block you ads and Meta tracking BS.

Yes, but still everything else will go to them. So deletion is the only right step.

I just tell them I don't like these apps scanning pictures of my kids and knowing their exact location at all times. My phone also has a lot of my kids pictures that I don't want being scanned for AI.

If a 40year old man had constant microphone, camera and GPS access to my kids, I'd be justified to go buy a gun. Why should a "corporation" be treated any different?

And privacy is not about hiding, it's about keeping nosey people out of our lives. Like closing the windows when you're talking about your finances so the neighbors can't hear. You're not hiding anything illegal, you just don't want strangers to know every detail of your life.

Privacy, safety, security, none are possible for any data on Instagram.

"Arguing that you don't care about privacy because you have nothing to hide is no different than saying you don't care about free speech because you have nothing to say."

yoinking that phrase, thank you. do you remember where you got it from?

Yes, It came from Edward Snowden, I thought I put the attribution after it but must have messed up the copy/paste (using a mobile)

Remind people that every time you go on Instagram it’s like having Zuck in your living room peering over your shoulder writing down every tiny thing you do. His motive is to profit off all that and he may or may not keep that notebook safe. It may not be criminal, but would you really want it to get out that you watched that video again?

The more companies gloat about how much they care about your privacy & how important it is to them while selling every piece of user data they can dig up the more it means absolutely nothing.
