"What happened?" are you for real?

Did you not read any newspaper, watch any news, or generally exist in society since 2016?

First you decided to bazooka yourselves in the foot with the Brexit vote, then went through a revolving clown show of increasingly bizarre political sideshow pieces that pretended to be PM, before finally opting to negotiate an EU exist that was about as disastrous as it could've been for your economy.

Add in the fact that the entire world has been turning to shit around you due to despotic leaders trying to rape their neighbours/the climate/populace/actual kids/everything joined by a cabal of evil billionaires who are gleefully destroying democracy and the world economy so they can go out in one final last hurrah of capitalism, and you have the audacity to ask "What happened?"?.

I seriously can't with these "I don't do politics" idiots anymore.

[-] bobs_monkey@lemmy.zip 44 points 1 week ago

I'd say a good 50% of people are not paying attention to current events/politics, then 40% who follow somewhat but don't really understand as they lack the critical thinking skills necessary to actually process the information and end up parroting the talking points of their preferred media, and then finally 10% who realize just how fucked everything is.

[-] Duamerthrax@lemmy.world 33 points 1 week ago

There's a lot of people who are only just now figuring out what the rest have been seeing happen for years, decades. Many of them are still in denial about how bad things have already gotten.

[-] M137@lemmy.today 6 points 1 week ago

It's less than 10% because some of those that are able to comprehend what's happening are the ones who made it happen and/or are rooting for it like nothing else they've ever done. This is exactly what many want, them being on a high horse as many as possible never even getting the chance of dreaming of that position.

They need to set the all time high scores list before they end the world. I'd say "/s" but honestly I think that may be what they're doing.

[-] lemmyng@lemmy.world 12 points 1 week ago

*before they end the world.

[-] drcobaltjedi@programming.dev 6 points 1 week ago

You're right, changing it now

Remember, folks: if you saw someone shoplift food? No. You didn't.

[-] Ookami38@sh.itjust.works 11 points 1 week ago

And if you see anyone shoplifting from Walmart, no you didn't.

[-] picnic@lemmy.dbzer0.com 6 points 1 week ago

This statement is something that I dont understand. While yeah, if that would happen to a big store, it might be alright but if I ran a corner store, I wouldnt be okay with this.

Also people who steal food here are gypsies and narcs. Normal people with financial difficulties get their goods from government, food shelters, churches and other help associations.

Now, I've been fucking dirt poor, I've gone sleep hungry, I've had to walk to every place instead of taking public transit. Still I've never thought about stealing food.

This statement is something that I dont understand

I’ll try to help fam. The hungry deserve to eat and they have the moral high ground over the ownership class that would rather that person starve and the food they stole destroyed.

Because drug addicts are famously affluent and gypsies don't need food at all. Also capitalism is widely known for taking care of the people in need and no one ever goes hungry or homeless unless they want to.

[-] FalcoLombardi1@lemmy.world 8 points 1 week ago

Do you own a corner store? Or are you just making baseless assumptions? Just because you had a certain experience doesn't mean that is everyone's experience. Learn some compassion you wanker.

[-] BeardededSquidward 7 points 1 week ago

The term "gypsies" is a slur by the way.

I just bought groceries at Kroger and at the self checkout they flagged me as a potential shoplifter for having my helmet in my basket

[-] Horsey@lemmy.world 26 points 1 week ago

As someone who stole from the supermarket all the time in college, I just wanna say that the need is starting to foment in recent times for me. The social contract is growing cracks now that I can’t see retirement and financial stability in my late 30s.

[-] Wren@lemmy.today 25 points 1 week ago

I consider it a public service to steal from businesses that destroy local economies, engage in union breaking and lobby against basic human rights.

[-] Horsey@lemmy.world 12 points 1 week ago

They’re putting armed guards at supermarkets near me right now lol.

[-] pelespirit@sh.itjust.works 8 points 1 week ago

Yep, our kroger looks like a prison/school entrance right now. They call it Fred Meyer here and it used to be at least nice to go to. They've gone full walmart.

[-] JackFrostNCola@aussie.zone 6 points 1 week ago

What value of groceries/items do you need to steal before they feel the need to use their weapons against you?

[-] Wren@lemmy.today 5 points 1 week ago

They have to protect the hoarde from the people they stole it from.

[-] Son_of_Macha@lemmy.cafe 19 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

They've been doing this for the last 15 years, people steal them and sell them in pubs. Premium steaks are not feeding world hunger.

[-] FishFace@piefed.social 19 points 1 week ago

I don't think people are stealing the steaks for their nutritional value, so that is still not the right framing.

[-] SatansMaggotyCumFart@piefed.world 22 points 1 week ago

I know I do but not everyone uses steaks as fleshlights.

[-] a4ng3l@lemmy.world 5 points 1 week ago

That’s raw…

[-] Cheems@lemmy.world 6 points 1 week ago

If you're going to steal food why not steal something enjoyable?

People have become so poor that the people blocking them from food have chosen to forfeit their lives.

Nobody should have to pay for food ever.

[-] Zephorah@discuss.online 15 points 1 week ago

In many other countries people are much poorer and don't end up stealing steaks from supermarkets. The issue is not finance but collapse of societal trust and Britain for once feels what they've been committing around the world for centuries.

[-] Korhaka@sopuli.xyz 8 points 1 week ago

It's never bread or carrots that get a security tag. Always the luxury products...

For Christ's sake boys, we're stealing fuckin meat

I mean it's 7.25 pounds of steak, thats a lot for a barbecue!

Do brits have barbecue, or was that eradicated after their war on flavors?

[-] Corkyskog@sh.itjust.works 6 points 1 week ago

I was going to say they could use like a pocket knife to cut it off, but then I realized where this was.

[-] technocrit@lemmy.dbzer0.com 6 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

On the other hand maybe meat is an extreme, unsustainable privilege that's inherently based on torturing/murdering animals and destroying the planet.

[-] RagingRobot@lemmy.world 10 points 1 week ago

That sounds like something meat would say. You just don't want us eating meat because you are made of meat lol

Apparently Ben Graham, the one who tweeted this, is a Reform supporter so, obviously not a valid voice

[-] melsaskca@lemmy.ca 5 points 1 week ago

I saw an old guy putting cans of Klik in his haversack. Then I saw him put a bag of carrots in as well. He also grabbed an 8-pack of double-A batteries and that's when I turned him in. /s
