Do we have data on Data saying data and Data, and data on people saying data and data and Data and even pronouncing Data as data instead of data?

Data using all of his processing power for several seconds to determine if Pulaski was addressing him or not.

Well, that and "is she intentionally mispronouncing my name? What might that mean? Let me browse 1 billion galactipedia entries about this behaviour"

I always think of a teacher I had in the 90's who had very strong opinions on the matter and wanted us all to abide by them. He was very soft-spoken but he would raise his voice a bit if we pronounced it wrong: "Day-ta is a name, dah-ta is information!"

The other time he raised his voice was to yell at a student, "Fire is not an element!!!" (we were talking about the periodic table at the time)

I pronounce his name "Toa-ster"

[-] WhoIzDisIz@lemmy.today 7 points 1 day ago

Is that because he gets you hot enough to burn?

[-] WhimsicalSadist@lemmy.world 4 points 1 day ago

Data had me at "Of course, but... [I am] fully functional... in every way. I am programed in multiple techniques. A broad variety of pleasuring."

[-] WhoIzDisIz@lemmy.today 3 points 1 day ago

Guess you must not mind sharing since we all know you weren't the only one he had.

Most Americans say "Day-ta" now, literally because of TNG. Look it up, real shiz. Before the show, we said it the other way.

I have a friend who pronounced it "dagh tuh" one time and I've been wondering what government he works for ever since. Possibly even Klingonese.

[-] zikzak025@lemmy.world 7 points 1 day ago

Not universally so.

E.g. this documentary predates TNG, and consistently uses the long A pronunciation of data:

(If the timestamp does not work correctly, jump to 12:00 in the video for the example)

AND IM RIGHT

So there's Day-tuh and Da-tuh.
What about Day-tay?
Or Duh-tuh?

[-] rockSlayer 8 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

God damn right. Day-da is reserved for bestest boy, dat-uh is for information

[-] SubArcticTundra@lemmy.ml 1 points 1 day ago

There's also duh-tuh when you're the Queen

[-] merc@sh.itjust.works 4 points 1 day ago

I don't care how people pronounce it. I just insist that it's a non-count noun.

Too many people say things like "these data" when they'd never actually say "this datum". Most people, if they ever talk about individual items from a dataset will say "this piece of data". That's how you talk about an uncountable item: this grain of sand, this drop of water, this slice of bread, this cup of tea, etc.

[-] nathanjent@programming.dev 1 points 1 day ago

There are 2 datas in the image.

[-] untorquer@quokk.au 1 points 1 day ago

Don't touch my datas with all your grimy little finger.

[-] daddycool@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

Is that a gif image?

[-] rustydrd@sh.itjust.works 3 points 1 day ago

As long as you use it as plural, I'm fine with either version.

[-] ripcord@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago

In my head I pronounced both of those as "data"

[-] SubArcticTundra@lemmy.ml 3 points 1 day ago

Theres data and then theres dɐta

[-] sundray@lemmus.org 3 points 1 day ago

But of course data is a plural noun, so it’s kind of like calling someone “Willows” or “Aprils.” Mr. Datum.
