You ever read a post, and then wonder about the posters life? What led them to think this way? What happened? What are people around them like? What media do they consume?
OP are you ok?

Calling an adult a child is observing that they're exhibiting immature behaviors most often seen in children. Your post is a very good example of an immature thought.
Don’t try bringing logic to a dingleberry convention!
Sometimes I'll say something in adult company that unintentionally reveals a lot about how I was raised. Usually accompanied by concerned looks and awkward silences.
I think this may have just happened to you OP. That's not a common way to see children.

i don't see it that way, but a lot of people in the US seem to, at least from what i can see. see my other comment for explanation.
I can't speak for the whole US but, in my experience, this is not representative of US attitudes toward children at all. Children are considered to be naive and ignorant of the world, but that's generally understood to be an unavoidable part of childhood. Insults like "childish" or "like a child" are generally applied to adults or older children who "should" have matured beyond such behavior by their present age. It's not a dig at children, they haven't had a chance to mature yet.
Your impression of US culture feels pretty wide of the mark to me. I don't think most Americans would identify with it.
ok, thanks, i'll keep it in mind
yeah np! kinda cool to see how american media distorts its own culture in transmission. I think when you're immersed in it you don't really notice the parts that don't make it into media representation.
An adult being called a child is only an insult because people are supposed to gain some maturity as adults. Do most think a child is bad because they cry when they get told no? No, because that's part of being a child - they have to learn. If you do that same thing at 20, it's a different deal. It's not that children are bad, it's that you should grow out of some things when you're older. In fact, sometimes people refer to a person as "child-like" as a compliment, but would use "childish" as an insult. Children are prioritized in the US pretty highly.
Tired: children are seen as livestock to some
Wired: children are seen as pets or trophies to some
Inspired: CHILDREN ARE NATURE MANIFEST!
I, speaking only for myself, hate children because they're loud, filthy, and annoying.
I think saying that America just hates children is a bit of a stretch there. In fact I think it's missing the point entirely.
I can't speak for the whole of America, only myself and the other people I know, but most of us would love to slow down, start a family, have someone to nurture, teach, pass down our own interests and skills to. We can't.
The economy is in shambles, the people in control are comedically evil. Ffs the majority of the people running the united states are more than likely on the epstein list. Everyone is living paycheck to paycheck, nobody can afford a house to actually properly raise a child in.
Nobody is having children right now because things are so bad here, nobody can afford to have a child, and even if they could, given how bad things are globally, nobody wants to bring a child into this world.
The system is so cruel to children because the people who run the system are profoundly corrupt, do not have the childrens best interests in mind, and want to make sure our next generation is as uninformed and easy to control as possible
Now if you're asking why most adults don't hang out with kids, it should be pretty obvious why that is. They're kids. Adults who are not their caregivers or in their lives have no business hanging out with them. I would be very concerned if my kid asked if his buddy could hang out and that person was q full grown man.
I'm sure there's people out there who genuinely dislike children, but it's pretty shortsighted to say "every single person in the country must hate children if these people do"
thanks for the nuanced response, i will take it to heart.
An extension to this is so many of us in the US don't seem to understand that we are still the children we were. You develop new parts of yourself, gain new perspectives, new habits, etc, but the reason you remember the insurance company is the same reason that little kid can hum the whole jingle.
While your premises may be true, I'm not sure the conclusion follows.
The premise isn't even close to true
I'm bass ackwards
A "Showerthought" is a simple term used to describe the thoughts that pop into your head while you're doing everyday things like taking a shower, driving, or just daydreaming. The most popular seem to be lighthearted clever little truths, hidden in daily life.
Here are some examples to inspire your own showerthoughts:
If you made it this far, showerthoughts is accepting new mods. This community is generally tame so its not a lot of work, but having a few more mods would help reports get addressed a little sooner.
Whats it like to be a mod? Reports just show up as messages in your Lemmy inbox, and if a different mod has already addressed the report, the message goes away and you never worry about it.
