Based Mullvad, once again

🫡

[-] kobra@lemmy.zip 15 points 3 days ago

I really wish I could use them but it never works with my streaming services. I've had to stick to Proton or NordVPN for reliable streaming :(

[-] devfuuu@lemmy.world 17 points 3 days ago

They literally say that they don't support streaming sites somewhere. Why even try? All those services are actively putting protections against vpns and fighting them as much as they can. A vpn service to support streaming sites needs to be constantly fighting and working on it.

[-] kobra@lemmy.zip 3 points 2 days ago

ah okay, didn't realize that. Sounds like mullvad just isn't a good fit for my use case.

[-] tyler@programming.dev 20 points 3 days ago

Have you tried all the extra settings they have to bypass blockers? There’s a lot of ways to change things to get it to work.

[-] kobra@lemmy.zip 8 points 3 days ago

It's probably been a year or so since I've given Mullvad another try, so maybe it's time I do that soon.

something that works for me is trying different servers until one gets through, i.e. it's not in the site's blocklist. Then I favorite that server and use it whenever I need that particular site

Even proton is super exposed to the web, I hate nord but they're the only one I've ever used where you barely ever get captchas or broken apps

[-] Evotech@lemmy.world 3 points 3 days ago

Even on lemmy. Sometimes I can't comment because I'm on proton vpn..

[-] judgyweevil@feddit.it 4 points 3 days ago

Me too, but I managed to make it work by trying different servers. For example for Japanese Netflix I use jp-osa-wg-004 instead of the default

[-] scytale@piefed.zip 2 points 3 days ago

Are English subs available when you're on a Japan server? I haven't checked it yet but my wife says it isn't available, so we usually go for Singapore or Malaysia.

The other problem is it seems they are implementing some restrictions somehow because a lot of the anime shows we watch have disappeared, whereas another user on the same account who is located in Asia (not necessarily in Singapore and Malaysia) has access to the very same shows.

[-] judgyweevil@feddit.it 1 points 3 days ago

For Frieren there were Japanese and English subs

[-] scytale@piefed.zip 1 points 2 days ago

Just checked, it’s hit-or-miss, like around a third of the content doesn’t have English subs available. And yeah, Frieren does have eng subs.

Self-hosted is unfortunately the way to go.

Average Mullvad win

[-] hddsx@lemmy.ca 44 points 3 days ago

If only they allowed port forwarding

[-] defaultusername@lemmy.dbzer0.com 20 points 3 days ago

Agreed, but the reason why they stopped allowing it is fairly understandable. Would be nice if there was another way to still allow it but at the same time, prevent the sharing of abusive content, all while maintaining user privacy.

[-] LodeMike@lemmy.today 7 points 3 days ago

Would be nice to have uPNP with a ~6 hour rotation just for torrenting.

[-] chmod755@feddit.org 4 points 3 days ago

Other VPN providers still allow it even with abusive content - maybe you need a good legal strategy to avoid getting in trouble for the actions of your users

[-] anzo@programming.dev 1 points 2 days ago

Other providers may have logs despite saying the contrary, idk.

[-] chmod755@feddit.org 6 points 3 days ago

That's the only reason I use PIA VPN instead of them.

[-] Whirling_Cloudburst@lemmy.world 2 points 3 days ago

Also. They no longer support OpenVPN. All my systems cannot transition to Wireguard as it breaks security stuff.

[-] LodeMike@lemmy.today 6 points 3 days ago

Skill issue

[-] hddsx@lemmy.ca 2 points 3 days ago

What did it break? My router broke and I bought one that supports wire guard.

I breaks my application firewall rules. I never used it on a router.

[-] hirihit640@sh.itjust.works 2 points 3 days ago

My firewall does not support wireguard.

When I read the post about that, my guess was that Mullvad would quickly work in it. I am happy to have been right.

Wuuut?!!

EDIT: calm down, no panic needed

[-] Abyssian@lemmy.world 40 points 3 days ago

You're not the boss of me, I'll panic if I want to.

[-] popekingjoe@lemmy.world 20 points 3 days ago

Yeah man it's your party, you can panic if you want to.

[-] mushroommunk@lemmy.today 16 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago)

You would panic too if it happened to you

And now I have a pavlovian urge to dance. Thanks Richie Simmons

[-] Abyssian@lemmy.world 14 points 3 days ago

You can dance if you want to.

[-] pressedhams 11 points 3 days ago

You can leave your friends behind.

[-] ItsNotImportant24@lemmy.ml 9 points 3 days ago

Cause your friends don't dance and if they don't dance, well they're no friends of mine
