Wallace and Scromit

How much is too much? My wife and I smoke a joint at night 7 days a week for the past year. Is that too much?

[-] lIlIlIlIlIlIl@lemmy.world 70 points 3 weeks ago

Oh you can relax, this is 100% propaganda. The bots are going to light me up for this, but it’s just not a real documented thing

[-] sidelove@lemmy.world 26 points 3 weeks ago

Raises hand meekly... I do in fact get this if I've been consistent for a long-ass time, not necessarily the dose size, but I swear to god you could replace my pen with ipecac and it would be the same experience. That said, long breaks "reset" it for me.

And while I don't personally know anyone with the same problem, there are thousands of stories both online and IRL for me of "friend of a friend can't smoke weed anymore because of it".

Its extremely well documented. This is exactly why you shouldnt take medical advice online seriously. It just stems from an over saturation of cannaboid receptors. The same receptors whose antiemetic effects are useful for cancer patients or other nausea prone patients can be reversed by over saturation of the receptor. It can be fixed typically by a period of abstinence that lets the receptors reset, but some people can never really partake again.

I say this as someone who worked as a nursing assistant and used to be an anatomy/biology tutor in college. I also have smoked way more weed than any of you over the past decade. If you havent seen any evidence of this, its because you have no idea how to look.

[-] LemmyFeed@lemmy.dbzer0.com 10 points 3 weeks ago

I don't think you've smoked more weed than me.

[-] architect@thelemmy.club 9 points 3 weeks ago

Lol, sure. You literally know no one here but insist you “smoke more weed than any of us” you’re propaganda. 100%.

[-] texture@lemmy.world 8 points 3 weeks ago

I also have smoked way more weed than any of you over the past decade

well now im going to assume the whole message is nonsense. good day.

Pretty sure this is actually a real thing, however this Philadelphia Inquirer bit is def written like propaganda

[-] Zos_Kia@jlai.lu 7 points 3 weeks ago

estimated 32% prevalence among cannabis users

113 cases documented worldwide

never heard of it despite your social circle being mostly daily smokers of high-thc weed

Lol definitely not a propaganda thing, and all of us 339 pot smokers should be worried

If Cannabinoid Hyperemesis Syndrome is real then it's extremely rare. Just look at People like Willie Nelson or Snoop. Fact is this syndrome was only first described after Colorado legalized cannabis recreationally. So even though many many people smoked just as much before legalization it somehow only became an issue afterward? Anecdotally I know a lot of people who smoke a lot of weed. Personally neither my wife and I have been sober for more than maybe a month in the last decade and a half, and I still smoke a lot more than just half a j at the end of the day. Sometimes if I don't smoke and I don't eat I get kinda nauseous. The same thing will happen if I do smoke and I don't eat. I have/get every illness, if this was a thing I would have it lol

[-] Tyrq@lemmy.dbzer0.com 25 points 3 weeks ago

Yeah, legalization widens the sample group of users effectively, which will cause rarer symptoms to appear among people who have sensitivities to things they wouldn't otherwise have known

[-] protist@retrofed.com 10 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago)

I would bet it happens more among people who overconsume edibles, which definitely became more accessible after legalization

[-] architect@thelemmy.club 7 points 3 weeks ago

I smoked 4 huge cones to the dome today in between vapes. And that’s just joints. I know a lot of people that smoke weed. Never seen this.

I do think it’s propaganda. I’ve seen doctors write people immediately off and blame the weed if they tell the truth. Like people with the fucking flu not taken seriously and told it was smoking weed. Some people will blame all sorts of things if they get sick.

If you're scromitting less than 4 times a day I think you're in the clear.

[-] LadyMeow 14 points 3 weeks ago

Call your doctor if a scrommit lasts longer than four hours, though!

[-] Ragallos@lemmy.dbzer0.com 9 points 3 weeks ago

Let's see, wake up, dab, scromit, eat potato, drink coffee, brush teeth, dab, do homework, scromit, go to class, go to work, come home, dab, do more homework, scromit, brush teeth, go to bed.

Phew, just made it on a normal day!

Smoking weed can be just as bad for your lungs as cigarettes. It creates tar deposits and can affect your vascular system as well.

You should consider vaporizers or using oils.

As far as frequency goes, I treat it like alcohol. I consume it on occasion to relax, during social events, concerts, etc. Any more frequent becomes a habit. That's when it's a problem.

[-] chicken@lemmy.dbzer0.com 11 points 3 weeks ago

Combustion products are always bad for your lungs, but cigarettes supposedly have stuff in them that is uniquely bad and especially carcinogenic.

"How much is too much" really depends on the person, but I'll venture to say that a single shared joint a day is not enough to induce scromiting in anyone remotely tolerant.

[-] JeromeVancouver@lemmy.ca 11 points 3 weeks ago

I smoked daily for 20 years and just 3 months ago I came down with this. Felt like food poisoning but my wife ate the same stuff as me and she never got sick.

Can confirm I scromitted, although any time I have thrown up in the past I also was quite loud.

  • Reefer Madness
  • You’ll turn gay after one joint
  • They’re spraying the weed with rat poison
  • It’ll make you scromit
  • Your skin will melt off

These are all 100% exactly the same, in that they’re all propaganda

[-] Watermark710@piefed.social 31 points 3 weeks ago

CHS is 100% a real thing, my wife has it. If she smokes more than a bowl a week, she will scromit. She developed CHS about 18 months after she first started smoking with me. I've been smoking for about 40 years, and I've never developed CHS. We're not sure exactly why some people get it and some people don't, but it is a real phenomenon that can happen to some cannabis users.

I'm pro-weed, pro-legalization, and generally in favor of personal freedom. But pot is not for everyone. It makes my wife incredibly sick. My (adult) daughter gets panic attacks from smoking pot, so she abstains.

[-] BellyPurpledGerbil@sh.itjust.works 11 points 3 weeks ago

I get what you're trying to say. But the image OP displayed is actually propaganda. I get the feeling a lot of people don't know what propaganda means and think it's only something a government does to make you a gungho patriot.

If the argument, info, message, whatever form of communication being delivered to you, is designed to appeal to your emotions, or sway your opinion, even if it contains some mote of truth, it's propaganda. Smokey the Bear is propaganda. To guilt you into not starting forest fires. It's for a decent cause, but it's no less a mascot designed to alter the behaviour of the populace.

CHS is a real thing, just not as portrayed by the OP. And the US government absolutely sprayed fuckloads of weed with paraquat back in the day, we have declassified files about it, there were hospitalizations, lifelong issues like Parkinson's and even deaths from it.

I was hospitalized with a similar condition called Canabanoidosis. Nearly died. Took 8 iv bags, other medicine, and 3 days of bedrest to survive. Ironically, its chronic. So no more of beelzabubs broccoli for me. The ratio of thc to blood in my blood was so wack that my blood became too acidic. Spasming and vomiting in response to water even touching my mouth. Very nearly died.

[-] GalacticGrapefruit@lemmy.world 20 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago)

Forgive me for asking, but... how?? The LD50 for cannabis is 980 mg/kg. For an adult weighing 180 lbs / 81 kgs, that would require nearly 79.38g of straight THC to the veins.

I mean, that's the LD50 for THC. But for it to actually change your blood acidity, you must have had to take an insane amount. Was it an industrial exposure?

[-] 10thGlyphix@lemmy.zip 13 points 3 weeks ago

Well, I had been smoking almost all day every day for a decade, the last year I was hitting dab at least 3 times per day. The weekend of the incident, i ate an early breakfast, drove for 6 hours, then went backcountry camping with what I thought was enough food/water (I was wrong) and a too much thc. Went all day with very little food/water, hitting a 2g vape every few minutes and walked around 17 miles. Then my friend drove us the 6 hour drive home, about an hour later I got a ride to the hospital, I usually drive myself to the hospital but I could barely move. I dont mess with that stuff or anything else anymore. Being clean feels better anyway.

I usually drive myself to the hospital

Why are you going to the hospital so much and why are you able to drive? If I go to the hospital it is because things went so bad I can't drive.

[-] 10thGlyphix@lemmy.zip 7 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago)

I have only been maybe 3 times. Driving myself 2 of 3 times qualifies as "usually". as to why, ambulances are like $3k per trip and I have an inhuman pain tolerance. A 6.5mm kidney stone or a hole from a 16penny nail that through and throughed my foot, if I am conscious, i am not spending $3k on a 30 minute glorified cab ride.

Great resource link! I poached it get the LD50 for delta-9 tetrahydrocannabinol which is the psychoactive property the plant has been bred for. That number is actually higher at 1270 mg/kg.

And as you stated, it would have to be 100% purity concentrate in a vein.

That's why cannabis fear mongering is utter nonsense. Yes, there can be seriously deleterious effects for heavy, chronic users. But unless you're really trying, a toxic dose is almost impossible.

Interesting. Although users in Philadelphia can cross the river to New Jersey to buy legal cannabis, it's only available in Pennsylvania with a medical card. I have to wonder if these cases are coming from people who bought weed legally in a neighboring state, or is it happening with people who consumed unregulated alternatives (like Delta-8) from places like smoke shops and gas stations?

[-] edgemaster72@lemmy.world 25 points 3 weeks ago

So maybe they're just vomiting because they went to NJ

[-] WhiteOakBayou@lemmy.world 15 points 3 weeks ago

No, its from legit sources. It's been a more and more popular diagnosis the last 5 or 6 years. I first saw it around 2018 in a legal state. One someone has it they kind of just have it and any THC use will cause the symptoms. It's n/v and abd pain characterized by recent cannabis use in a chronic cannabis use patient. I've never seen it in anyone who described themselves as moderate. Relief with hot showers and worsening with cannabis use are the diagnostic criteria other than personal/social hx.

The doctors I worked with felt like it was due to the low price and availability of concentrates.

My gastroenterologist had this on the short list of why I was vomiting randomly but 1. It's not screaming 2. Hot baths didn't help in the slightest (I wished) and 3. I don't smoke only eat it.

Current going plan is cyclical vomiting syndrome. Yaaay.

Is it possible to vomit without screaming? Am I just a drama queen?

[-] Watermark710@piefed.social 9 points 3 weeks ago

It's entirely possible. I could vomit 3 feet away from you, and all you'd hear is the puke hitting the floor. I developed the ability to stealth vomit when I was a secret alcoholic and didn't want people to get suspicious.

Damn this meme thread turned into some otherwise semi-serious cannatalk. Everyone just needs to chill out and smoke a joint.

I think I have a life goal now to hit back-to-back blinkers until I scromit. Though I'm pretty sure I've scromitted when sick with food poisoning. Might be different. Idk. I'm like 6 blinkers deep.

Truly the word of the century.

I needed a term for the urge I feel every time I read the news, and now I have it.
