I am into torrenting movies- alas no money to get a VPN, What else can I do? I don't really need a VPN because I live in a third world country and I don't get no lettters if I sail the seas, I was searching for any other ways to hide my IP address from the swarm, without loosing much speed?

I came across this Tribler client, I don't know if its good, Should I try Socks5 proxy or something like that?

Or tell me if the only good method is using a VPN, in that case I should wait out a couple years until I make money and remote torrent by making like 15 accounts in TorBox.

I will apologize, if I said something stupid in advance because I severly lack any knowledge in what I am talking about.

Only reason for vpn is to avoid nasty letters from isp.

Of that doesn't happen on your country, ignore the need for vpn while torrenting.

If I don't use a VPN, is it a good idea to seed? I feel bad if I just get it and don't seed lol.

[-] Mothra@mander.xyz 5 points 1 week ago

I didn't know there was a difference in seeding vs leeching with regards to using a vpn. My logic would be, if you can leech, you can also seed. But I'm no expert so, take it with a grain of salt

[-] imjustmsk@lemmy.ml 3 points 1 week ago

Oh yes I know that, what I meant is Its already risky leeching but if I also keep seeding- my IP will be visible to the swarm longer.

You can usually uncheck one .txt file from the content so it doesn't download and the torrent will stay at 99%.

That doesn’t prevent your client from uploading, your client seeds while it is downloading. It will still complete and do the same thing anyway, every client I know of will show as completed when all the requested content is downloaded.

[-] Lag@piefed.world 1 points 1 week ago

I would think it only says complete on your client-side because not everyone should know everything you are requesting at once. It will still be seeding obviously but it's just a low effort way in case the people looking for a list of seeders use low effort too.

There's a pretty good chance that there isn't an enforcement method in your country. It's not worth it for companies to enforce copyright in countries where nobody has any money.

[-] imjustmsk@lemmy.ml 2 points 1 week ago

Yea, they only take actions towards the people who hosts piracy websites mostly.

[-] BastingChemina@slrpnk.net 7 points 1 week ago

I don't understand what you are asking. You don't need a VPN since you lube in a third world country that does not care and piracy.

Then torrent movies without a VPN.

[-] Appoxo@lemmy.dbzer0.com 9 points 1 week ago

OP wants privacy from the swarm.

[-] deathmetaldawgy@lemmy.ml 2 points 1 week ago

Can someone explain what this “swarm” is to someone who knows pretty much fuck all about computer hardware and software and is semi interested in setting sail? I’ve downloaded music for free my whole life with no issues or letters in the mail (Usa)

[-] Appoxo@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 1 week ago

If you are really interested:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Glossary_of_BitTorrent_terms

Swarm specifically: The general collective working together so you (the leech in this case) can complete the download and (best case) take over a part of the seeding pool.

[-] Ftumch@lemmy.today 5 points 1 week ago

I don't think you need to hide your IP address, but if you really want to I guess you could try I2P.

[-] xnx@piefed.social 4 points 1 week ago

Bind your qbittorrent to cloudflare warp. https://one.one.one.one/

[-] pastermil@sh.itjust.works 3 points 1 week ago

You sure you wanna use that for piracy?

[-] imjustmsk@lemmy.ml 1 points 1 week ago

I once remember trying it and it was slow when I tried it.

[-] digital_descartes@lemmy.ml 4 points 1 week ago

https://riseup.net/en/vpn

  • But I can't promise that this won't use up a few kbps of your internet connection

[-] imjustmsk@lemmy.ml 4 points 1 week ago

it doesn't have p2p and its slow.

[-] racoon@lemmy.ml 3 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

vpns are always slow: 4,6 vs 420 Mb/s right now. If the free tier is even slower, then it is a real punishment

[-] Majestic@lemmy.ml 1 points 1 week ago

They don't allow torrenting on it. It's for web browsing only. It won't work well at all.

[-] Majestic@lemmy.ml 3 points 1 week ago

It doesn't matter.

The only reason to have VPNs for this is preventing internet shut-offs, fines, and nasty letters. Those only exist in the first world for the most part and only parts of it (in Germany they will directly fine you thousands per violation most severe case, in most places like the US they just shut off your internet after enough violations but you get warnings).

If your country doesn't have a regime for fining you directly for this, doesn't have internet shut-off laws, and doesn't have any other major consequences then it doesn't matter. You can look it up.

Even some first world countries don't care. Through a quirk of law in Australia for example it's basically impossible for copyright holders to go after people doing p2p stuff for anything but the retail price ($20) of works so it's not worth their time and people there can do it freely.

No one else in the swarm cares who you are nor can they do anything. Use a modern client like Qbittorrent and keep it updated to stay secure.

At most maybe your ISP may throttle your bittorrent traffic because it's not hidden using a VPN. But if you don't have money you're not getting a VPN that would improve your speed situation anyways. Just be patient.

[-] imjustmsk@lemmy.ml 1 points 1 week ago

I haven't noticed ISP throttling speed yet, so I guess a VPN is not necessary at all.

[-] SammyJK@programming.dev 2 points 1 week ago

Proton VPN is free to use. It has limited options but should be enough for torrenting movies.

[-] Nikki 8 points 1 week ago

the free tier on proton blocks torrent traffic FYI (for me anyway last I tried)

[-] imjustmsk@lemmy.ml 2 points 1 week ago

yes it does and its slow too.

[-] SammyJK@programming.dev 2 points 1 week ago

Ohhh, darn it! Didn't know that. Thanks for the reply!

The built in Firefox VPN? Can you use that system wide though or just the browser?

[-] Lemmchen@feddit.org 4 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

Does VPN protect my whole device?

No. The built-in VPN only hides your IP address and location while browsing in Firefox. It does not protect traffic from other apps on your device. For full-device protection, we offer Mozilla VPN.

Since you said you don't need it for torrents, I thought this would suffice. But I realize now you still want to hide your IP while torrenting.

Windscribe has a free tier and you can sign up for unlimited data at a single VPN server for only $1 per month.

[-] imjustmsk@lemmy.ml 3 points 1 week ago

I have tried it but a singular movie I download is probably around 10-20 gb and Windscribe just gives you 10gb/mon

Download smaller movies then. There are trackers that specialize in highly compressed low quality encodes. You will have to make sacrifices somewhere if you don’t want to spend any money on a VPN.

[-] imjustmsk@lemmy.ml 1 points 1 week ago

Ohh yea I guess so, I am spoiled with good quality movies -Whenever I see YTS I run the other way, If I had to download smaller movies I don't even have to use a VPN as mentioned in the post I can use TorBox or Seedr., They already might have movies cached too.

What's the catch? Does it support P2P?

[-] MCTamTam@feddit.org 1 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

I don't know about p2p. I think the catch is that they will add premium features when they have a plenty of users.

[-] imjustmsk@lemmy.ml 3 points 1 week ago

I don't know,  I can't trust a random "free unlimited VPN" with my internet traffic, as well as the text in their website feels vague, and clanker generated mostly.

Any random Free Unlimited VPN with high speed is most probably a scam, who is crazy enough to throw money into a hole for no particular reason.

OP, you seem to have a lot of requirements for someone who isn’t willing to spend any money on a VPN. You either trust the VPN provider or you don’t. If you aren’t paying for it, assume your traffic is being monitored and monetized somehow.

You asked about VPNs, people gave you options, and it looks like you’ve turned down every one of them. A free unlimited VPN with no strings attached that allows torrenting at high speeds does not exist. You may as well be searching for a unicorn.

[-] imjustmsk@lemmy.ml 2 points 1 week ago

I know I am looking for a unicorn lol, I was not really looking for a VPN anyway I know it simply doesn't exist, I turned down most of them because I did try them all, I came to the realization to not gaf and torrent without a VPN.

[-] MCTamTam@feddit.org 2 points 1 week ago

I know what you mean.

[-] bl4kers@lemmy.ml 1 points 1 week ago

You seem to have a lot of requirements. Beggars can't be choosers

[-] imjustmsk@lemmy.ml 1 points 4 days ago

lol true, Ill just have to decide to not use a VPN until I get some money.
