The Button Has Ended (thebutton.lemmy.zip)
submitted 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago) by Demigodrick@lemmy.zip to c/announcements@lemmy.zip

An experiment has begun.

There’s a button.

That’s it. Just a button… and a timer counting down.

Anyone can press it. Everyone sees what happens. And every press changes things forever.

  • One shared button
  • No undo, no reset
  • A collective test of curiosity, restraint… or chaos

Some of you will hold the line. Some of you won’t last five seconds.

Either way, once it’s over… it’s over.

The Button

So the only question is:

Do you press it?

The Button is open to anyone on any federated platform, be that Lemmy, Piefed, Mastodon... even Stegodon!

Any user from any instance can sign in and press the button, but you only get one chance.

To add another layer to this, users can choose which faction to join, and the "winner" is the faction that holds the button the longest amount of time before it eventually runs out.

Initially a press of the button resets the timer to 15 minutes - this may reduce if the game carries on for a while. At the time of this post, there is about 60 minutes until the button expires. The first button press will be available when there's 15 minutes left, i.e. in 45 minutes, but you can sign up now to be ready!

There is also a permanent record of the first pusher :)

🔴 The Button Has Ended 🔴

Thank you to all that played :)

The Button may be back in the future!

[-] melvisntnormal@feddit.uk 28 points 3 weeks ago

I will wear my "Slowest Reaction" and "Closest To Zero" accolades with pride 🏆

[-] Sibbo@sopuli.xyz 14 points 3 weeks ago

With 13 hours 20 minutes my estimate of 6 hours wasn't that bad. But the reason it failed was not night, but probably people being in the office.

[-] calmblue75@lemmy.ml 13 points 3 weeks ago

Thank you demigodrick, this was a great experience! I do hope for another season of The Button! 😄

[-] blx@piefed.zip 11 points 3 weeks ago

I wonder if people got too greedy and waited too long to press, or if we ran out of people

[-] Demigodrick@lemmy.zip 11 points 3 weeks ago

still lots of people with a press left, but not sure if people just missed it ending!

Can we have the button back today? Maybe with a cool down time di people can press it again after 1h or so without creating multiple accounts?

[-] Demigodrick@lemmy.zip 9 points 3 weeks ago

I have a lot of work to do on it, but do people really want it back so quickly?

I can add a 1 hour cooldown though for a round 2 :)

[-] Deebster@infosec.pub 13 points 3 weeks ago

Maybe in a week or two, TheButton Redox, once you've had time to make your tweaks and a bit of word to get round.

My bet: the buttons dies after less than six hours, because most people on Lemmy are living in European or American timezones.

[-] bdonvr@thelemmy.club 7 points 3 weeks ago

Eastern US timezones nightshifter reporting for duty!

I am immortalized as press #69.

[-] Demigodrick@lemmy.zip 8 points 3 weeks ago

Without a doubt the most important press

[-] MissesAutumnRains 14 points 3 weeks ago

I wish I didn't have the memory of a goldfish because I would touch that button so good

[-] ptz@dubvee.org 14 points 3 weeks ago

Is there a Github for this and/or possibly a framework for the chat, leaderboard, and federated magic-link login?

I've thought about putting together some simple games with Fediverse login but never wanted to deal with the low level boilerplate stuff.

[-] Demigodrick@lemmy.zip 15 points 3 weeks ago

No, not yet, but I am actually pulling together something around the login as I've ended up using it in a couple of places with things I'm working on, so will let you know when thats up!

[-] kip@piefed.zip 10 points 3 weeks ago

i saw red last on the leaderboard and decided to help them out but got distracted, my brain went wrong and i signed up for the blue team. to atone for this error i have resolved never to push the button

[-] calmblue75@lemmy.ml 8 points 3 weeks ago

The blue team expresses its regrets but respects the decision taken by our team member. Sincerely, Calmblue75

[-] kip@piefed.zip 8 points 3 weeks ago

you're a fine ambassador for the blues, so i feel less bad that about two minutes after i wrote that i went back to have a look and pushed it by accident. chalk another one up for your guys

[-] calmblue75@lemmy.ml 7 points 3 weeks ago

Thanks for the click, even if by accident!

[-] pdqcp@lemmy.dbzer0.com 7 points 3 weeks ago

He pressed it when it was blue

[-] calmblue75@lemmy.ml 7 points 3 weeks ago
[-] kip@piefed.zip 6 points 3 weeks ago

Team Red could really use some help. Let's make this comeback happen!

Why do I need to log in to do this?

[-] Deebster@infosec.pub 13 points 3 weeks ago

It's not asking for your password, it just needs you to tell it your username and server so it can send you a magic link. It's technically logging in, but it needs to know who you are so you can press the button (and use the chat).

This is how this kind of event always works on the Fediverse. It's not putting your account at risk and I don't really see the problem.

[-] ieatpwns@lemmy.world 9 points 3 weeks ago

Who pressed it first? I wanna press it so bad

[-] Demigodrick@lemmy.zip 12 points 3 weeks ago

There is a leaderboard on there with a bunch of stats including that one :)

Go on, press it.. you know you want to!

[-] chunes@lemmy.world 9 points 3 weeks ago

I love shit like this. Thank you to whoever coded all this.

[-] mschae@discuss.mschae23.de 8 points 3 weeks ago

I quoted GLaDOS saying “Don't press that button. You don't know what you're doing.”

… and no one pressed the button. It ended.

Shades of Lost, with The Button needing to be pressed every 108 minutes ...

[-] Lumidaub@feddit.org 8 points 3 weeks ago

I check on Artemis II for 5 goddamn seconds and you people let the Button die.

[-] tigeruppercut@lemmy.zip 7 points 3 weeks ago

I didn't press the reddit one, guess I'll press this one

[-] nailingjello@piefed.zip 7 points 3 weeks ago

Small typo in the TL;DR. It says the timer resets to 5 mins not 15.

[-] SkaveRat@discuss.tchncs.de 6 points 3 weeks ago

Man, now I miss the good old days of reddit April fools experiments

[-] calmblue75@lemmy.ml 6 points 3 weeks ago

We fought valourously, blue team! 26% of the total hold time! Congrats to the winning purple! And also to the 2nd place team green! Red, you fought great too!

[-] Mac@mander.xyz 6 points 3 weeks ago

My worst fears realized: it ended when i was away, between work and home. :(
