Well at least Spain has the balls to stand for humanity. My country is being a 'lil bitch about it again. Bloody politicians that are spineless.

[-] Fisch@discuss.tchncs.de 18 points 1 month ago

I'm from Germany, not much better here 😕

[-] mirshafie@europe.pub 14 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

All of Europe is pretty bad on the global stage right now, but Germany is the worst.

Love to Germany from Sweden

[-] Fisch@discuss.tchncs.de 4 points 1 month ago

Germany wanting to have the strongest army in Europe and investing more money into the military than it ever has since Nazi Germany is totally not something we should worry about

Ah. The anti-Semitic card.

Look here. Being of an opposing opinion with the government of Israel, has nothing to do with opposing Jewism.

[-] Sp00kyB00k@lemmy.world 54 points 1 month ago

It is the same with disliking the CCP and liking the Chinese. I care for the people but not for their arsehole countries / governments.

[-] IchNichtenLichten@lemmy.wtf 30 points 1 month ago

Ah. The anti-Semitic card.

They could use some new cards, they've worn that one out.

[-] SmackemWittadic@lemmy.world 15 points 1 month ago

They might as well get that card glued to the table with how often they try to play it

[-] WanderingThoughts@europe.pub 15 points 1 month ago

They've playing the "few weeks before Iran has nukes" card for 30 years and in the end someone took the bait. You just need the right kind of player at the table and that worn out card still can win the game.

Which other countries has Spain recently withdrawn their ambassadors from?

If it’s only Israel, then an accusation of antisemitism has a reason.

After looking a bit, Spain withdrew their ambassador from Argentina for something petty. Also from Nicaragua after they had complained about Spanish colonial attitudes.

Of course Spain also did shit like revoke diplomatic status of the Flemish ambassador over supporting independence for Catalonia.

So yeah, it looks like Spain is still all into their imperialism regarding Latin America, and of course keep the Basques and Catalans under their thumb.

[-] IchNichtenLichten@lemmy.wtf 49 points 1 month ago

Only one of those countries is guilty of genocide. Strange that you didn't mention that.

[-] IchNichtenLichten@lemmy.wtf 17 points 1 month ago

If you have to go that far back, you're not a serious person.

[-] Schmoo@slrpnk.net 8 points 1 month ago

The actions of former governments in Spain are not the actions of the current government of Spain.

[-] mcv@lemmy.zip 5 points 1 month ago

Spain is not allowed to criticise genocide because of something that happened in the middle ages? Are you serious?

[-] rants_unnecessarily@piefed.social 29 points 1 month ago

If they did this to a Christian nation, would it be anti Christian? Or anti Muslim for a Muslim country?

Israel's actions aren't derived from being Jewish.

[-] xxam925@lemmy.zip 3 points 1 month ago

Fuck that yes it is.

Have you read the Old Testament?

[-] Samskara@sh.itjust.works 2 points 1 month ago

The difference is that there’s only one Jewish state.

Judaism is also a religion, but Jews are not just a religious group. They are an ethnicity and nation first. Lots of Jews are secular or atheists.

If you attack Ireland, its anti Irish more than anti catholic.

Israel‘s actions are derived from wanting to secure the nation state for the Jewish people. The reason Israel is in the Levant and Jerusalem is very much derived from Jewish history, culture, religion, and identity.

Iran has threatened to destroy Israel for decades and has actively been working on that goal.

[-] Lucius_Sweet@lemmy.world 3 points 1 month ago

Securing a nation state for Jewish people at the expense of the Palestinians who have been living in the area for millennia.

This Jewish nation state was secured by colonial settler Jews not native to the region migrating to the region and taking land for themselves around a century ago after the collapse of the Ottoman empire. They are still to this day expanding their state by stealing the Palestinian land.

The hatred of Israel by its neighbors is not for no reason and it is not because they are Jews. The Irish were also not fans of the British colonising them, neither were the native people of the Americas when their land was stolen by European settlers. Israel is just another case of European settlers stealing land and causing trouble where they don't belong.

Good. Now expel the US ambassador and Iran will allow Spanish oil through the Straits of Hormuz

[-] moody@lemmings.world 10 points 1 month ago

All that olive oil has to go somewhere.

[-] Gorilladrums@lemmy.world 9 points 1 month ago

Iran doesn't actually have the capacity to do that. They're trying to mine the waters and they have no naval power to secure safe passage. The reality is that even if a country did comply with Iran's demands, there's a very good chance that the ship will get hit anyway by some rogue regional commander or some random mine.

Keep in mind, previous administrations were well aware of this scenario which is why they didn't whack the mullah regime in this way even though they could've easily done it. The current situation can only be achieved by an idiot who lacks the ability to understand the consequences of their actions like Trump.

Just like when there was a big flu about 100 years ago. The world made fun of them for taking action and decided to name the flu after them.

[-] discocactus@lemmy.world 4 points 1 month ago

Noone expects the Spanish Inquisition!

[-] Gorilladrums@lemmy.world 4 points 1 month ago

My understanding is the current PM of Spain, Pedro Sanchez, is incredibly unpopular in the country and is pretty much universally hated. National polls put his party, PSOE, at just 26% support. He is consistently losing to the conservative party, PP, and the hard right party, VOX, is quickly catching up to both. There's a very good chance that the right wing parties are going to win the next general election in 2027 and form a majority coalition. The right wing parties, especially VOX, are very much pro Israel and against everything Sanchez does. So there's a good chance that all this good will towards Palestine is going to be reversed next year if he and his party fail to maintain their seats.

[-] Lucius_Sweet@lemmy.world 13 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

Are we believing in polls again after they have been consistently wrong for the last decade? Almost as stupid as believing polls a year and a half out from a general election means something, like reading tea leaves at this stage. The incumbent is never popular at this point, extreme views at this point tend to temper at the polling booth, especially since the Spanish economy is doing well.

The Spanish public are still massively anti Israel due to all of their genocide and everything.

[-] mattyroses@lemmy.today 3 points 1 month ago

and they're massively against the US, especially as Trump has tried to attack Spain

Vox is a minority party, and are not going to win the general. The danger is only they'd be put into a coalition with the center right party, PP.

And that's looking much less likely - Sanchez and the center-left aren't overly popular, but opposition to the Iran War and the US in general is massively popular. Vox is the only party that's been dumb enough to support Trump over Spain (ironic for supposed nationalists), and it's going to cost them. Even the remnants of the Falange are breaking with them on this.
