As a man I also want to select a female driver only. Seriously here in the Netherlands if you get a male driver good chance it's some agro 20 year old high on NOx who also hates queers. I'm not even queer but I don't want my money going to cunts like that.
Men being triggered by this is so cringe. Ew.
The sad reality is that women have to worry about being attacked... Not all men are creepy but men need to also hold the shitty men accountable too. The "would you rather be in the woods with a bear or a random man" question broke the internet because it was a strong argument and made a lot of men think about who even they feel comfortable with if alone in the woods.... Most men said the bear, too... Idk many men who are deathly afraid of women and this isnt me saying that men havent been raped, abused, attacked. No human should have to experience ANY intimate violence. The risks are just less statistically. Its not weird to try and mitigate violence on any app...
Most of the comments here seem to be talking about the politics of the gender roles, but no one really seems to be mentioning that Uber should only be used as a very last resort. Call a Taxi, a friend, take public transit. Do not support the VC startup trash that doesn't pay their ~~employees~~ "contractors" living wage.
Taxi drivers and taxi companies rip off passengers. Taxi companies don't do fixed rates agreed-upon before the trip.
I'm not going to mooch off a friend.
Public transit can't always get me where I need to go when I need to get there in a reasonable time (but it is my first choice when it's too far or unpleasant to walk).
If the issue is the drivers not being paid well, then tip well.
When taxis and/or public transit can improve their services to the point where Uber doesn't replace them, then Uber will be redundant.
If you called a taxi company that didnt do fixed rates you should have looked into them before you called. If you consider a ride "mooching" I would not want to be your friend. If your public transit isnt good enough, call your local reps and COMPLAIN.
Fuck this culture of "tipping". I wouldnt have to fucking tip if they paid their drivers. Do you tip in cash on Uber? The driver won't know that until they get there and you just look like a low-pay customer. Do you tip in the app? Congrats, you just tipped uber. The driver may or may not receive it. Do you verify with each driver to make sure they end up getting the money? Uber has obfuscated tipping for drivers FOR YEARS.
Will women drivers be high in demand since the majority of drivers are men?
I think I have only seen a woman driving my cab only once or twice.
Male drivers probably want that too. Especially the drunk women.
There was an exposé about the staggering number of sexual assaults last year by the new york times. Some people were drawn to this job for the wrong reasons. You read some of these women's stories and its horrifying.
I'm dowdy and older and even I have had some questionable interactions. Once an uberdriver invited himself to to bar I was meeting my friends at. Half an hour after dropping me off, he walks in and gets a drink and just stares. I don't drink because of medication but this was definitely a niche place that you don't grab a drink at spur of the moment. It was so uncomfortable and we left pretty quickly. Idk what his intentions were but I didn't want to find out. It was so unsettling.
Sometimes getting a ride is necessary. And when that happens, maybe it's better that there are options. I'm sure Uber didn't make this decision out of the goodness of their hearts but because of the lawsuits and the number of women who were dropping off of their platform.
A lot of the responses here seem to be taking it personally as if they are being called assaulters themselves. Some people are even making jokes like good riddance. It's rude af and belittling. Not everything is black and white and not everything can be understood from a perspective of privilege. It might not feel like it, but women navigate the world looking over their shoulder and not having that feeling in of itself is a privilege

I think it's just not having people in your life telling you how bad it is. I have a friend who changed her name on Facebook to avoid stalkers, something I wouldn't have even thought of at all. It still feels bad when I feel like she (subconsciously) feels scared being around me though, I don't want to make people afraid by just existing.
These fucking comments. Anytime anything is done to make women safer men get up in arms and upset. "What about me?" cries the incel.
I'm fine with this if they allow male drivers to avoid women clients.
..... Do you also have to walk down the street at night and worry about being raped or grabbed? If so, do you worry about men or women being the primary perpetrator??
Yes, they have to. Maybe not rape, but if you take a look at statistics of street violence, nearly in every country, you will see that men are victims, too. In many countries they are all so quite overrepresented here. In my country, men are over twice as often victims of violence on the streets as women.
So yes, you have to worry as a men when you're out there at night. And it's one of the most infuriating things about this debate that people are totally denying that half of the population can be victims of violence and accusing others of being misogynistic incels. Talk to the men in your life and they will tell you about sketchy and violent situations out there.
You might also think about what we are talking about here: A billion dollar company is not vetting their drivers correctly. They are talking the sketchiest people, are not doing any form of interview process and are therefore having a problem with their employees hurting, abusing, raping their customers. Their solution is not to increase the safety for everybody, but to accuse one gender of being generally abusive. And if people critic that, they are flamed as incels here? That's stupid.
If you're a male driver trying to avoid women clients, you don't have to worry as the women are likely already avoiding you.
As a man, I also want to ride with a woman driver, for my safety.
I wonder what happens when the guy identifies as a woman.
If you're confused about the down votes, it's probably the way you worded this thought. Saying it's a man identifying as a woman, implies you believe they are a man not a woman and are only treating them as a woman because that's what they want. In reality they are a woman who identifies as a woman.
I think you being downvoted and not getting an explanation as to why might leave you to continue the same line of thinking without correction.
It's not a bad question to ask how this will affect trans women though. I live in a place where there are a lot of TERF women who might want to take advantage of this service and would be offended to be picked up by a trans woman.
give men the option to ride with men as well, and nobody will have an issue with this
i see more complaints about misogyny in the comments here than actual misogyny. Which is good, I'm just wondering what I missed
Men are upset that women feel the need to protect themselves against men.
Okay but where? On balance there are not a lot of those comments and they're downvoted through the floor. The complaints make it sound like they're alone in a sea of angry men.
You can sort by controversial or just open the replies under some other comments. There’s plenty of sexism against women here.
A lot of the nastier comments on lemmy aren’t super in your face, they’re subtle jokes about women being bad drivers or that it’s not fair to say men are violent against women.
Driving for one of these companies is a hard wash anyways. I'm glad women can get out safe though. Personally I don't care who picks me up, I can small talk with anyone and not be threatening. I have 4 daughters and a wife. I don't need more women drama.
