Using the term "centrist" pretty loosely

[-] surewhynotlem@lemmy.world 84 points 1 year ago

They're only Nazis 50% of the time. That's right in the center!

[-] SteveHeist@lemmy.sdf.org 5 points 1 year ago

They're practically enlightened!

[-] Diplomjodler@feddit.de 31 points 1 year ago

"Slightly less fascist" just doesn't roll off the tongue.

That was exceptionally well written, as well as completely fucking depressing.

I am so tired of living in a world with instantaneous access to lifetimes worth of documentary evidence regarding the atrocities brought forth on humanity via organized religion, and then watching otherwise rational minded people continue replicating the same behaviors without remorse or consideration for the consequences.

Nothing unites the republicans quite like a chance to kill Muslims

[-] psycho_driver@lemmy.world 27 points 1 year ago

Anything that distracts them from trying to dismantle democracy . . .

[-] originalfrozenbanana@lemm.ee 11 points 1 year ago

I mean not anything…more war in the Middle East is a steep price to pay

[-] PupBiru@kbin.social 4 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

but it doesn’t effect white westerners so is it really that steep?

*edit: forgot the /s is 150% necessary

Nothing improves a speakership like the stink of failure, I guess? Might as well bring him around for another go.

[-] worldwidewave@lemmy.world 24 points 1 year ago

The attempt to reinstall McCarthy faces long odds. Two strong candidates are running active campaigns with only days to go before voting, and many dozens of Republicans have already made endorsements. There is little reason to think the basic math for McCarthy has changed for McCarthy since last Tuesday.

Too many people still don’t like Kevin. I’m resigned that it’s going to be Gym Jordan.

[-] originalfrozenbanana@lemm.ee 51 points 1 year ago

Gym Jordan? You mean the same Gym Jordan involved in the cover up of systematic sexual abuse in the Ohio State University system? That Gym Jordan?

[-] BustinJiber@lemmy.world 18 points 1 year ago

Nothing fixes age old conflict between Muslims and Israelis like... checks notes... American House of Representative's... speaker?... that nobody wants?

[-] queermunist@lemmy.ml 12 points 1 year ago

Oh boy, Democrats still have a chance to disappoint me and reach across the aisle for this clown.

[-] xionzui@sh.itjust.works 29 points 1 year ago

If the result is more cooperation between parties, that sounds good to me. The entire thing that got him ousted was certain far right members saying “you can’t work with the Democrats at all, no matter what,” which is one of the most fucked up, dysfunctional things I’ve heard out of our government in a while

[-] originalfrozenbanana@lemm.ee 26 points 1 year ago

That sounds nice but the GOP has no interest in consensus based governance. Cooperating with them means acquiescing or losing

[-] atzanteol@sh.itjust.works 2 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

Or it comes with rules changes and members chairing committees?

[-] originalfrozenbanana@lemm.ee 7 points 1 year ago

Because you expect them to keep their word. Which they don’t do.

Personally I don’t see a way back for American democracy barring a literal revolutionary movement in the conservative base that somehow…moderates them? And that’s just not what revolutionaries do, and misaligned with the GOP’s backers want.

[-] mayo@lemmy.world 9 points 1 year ago

He said the same thing as well. They don't know how democracy works.

[-] NABDad@lemmy.world 6 points 1 year ago

They know how it works. They just want to end it.

[-] queermunist@lemmy.ml 9 points 1 year ago

If there's one thing the parties can agree on, its that we need a white settler colony in the middle east.

[-] djquadratic@kbin.social 6 points 1 year ago

I’ve seen you comment this before and I’m really sick of it. Get Jews out of your mouth and mind your own business. Idk where your hard on for Jews came from but it’s really weird. Grow up.

[-] queermunist@lemmy.ml 1 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

I'm really sick of whiteness and sick of the way some white people present themselves as being nonwhite so they don't feel white guilt.

[-] player1@sh.itjust.works 2 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

You need to read about the history of the civil rights movement and who was involved in allyship.

[-] toasteecup@lemmy.world 5 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

Quick clarification, are you calling Jews white?

[-] queermunist@lemmy.ml 4 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

I'm calling white Jews white.

White-passing Asian Jews have conditional white privilege that disappears as soon as someone realizes they're Jewish, and obviously African Jews never get to be white, but white Jews are totally white and like many whites they steal valor from non-white people to make themselves feel less guilty about their white privilege.

Look at Israel's businesses and politics; you'll see mostly white faces. Israel is a white colony run by white people. Truly the 51st state.

[-] toasteecup@lemmy.world 14 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

The same could be said of the white portions lgtbq+ community, but you don't see this Jew playing that card. I would appreciate if you didn't insult me in such a way just as I try my best to give you that respect.

[-] queermunist@lemmy.ml 6 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

I don't deny that I'm white or that I have white privilege. I would appreciate if white Jews would do the same.

EDIT Actually, imagine if I tried to claim I wasn't white because I'm queer. Imagine how fucking absurd that would be.

[-] toasteecup@lemmy.world 11 points 1 year ago

Too bad Jews have legitimate claim to being a minority. As Jews, we can develop diseases that specifically only affect Jews, an example being tay-sachs and another being the "sensitive Jew stomach".

Something else to consider is the enemy we have in common, Nazis, would love for you and everyone else to think that white passing Jews are just white because that helps to diminish Jewish culture and make us nothing. It helps remove our sense of self and belonging just like the christofacists and their "pray away the gay camps" do for your community.

I hope this message gives you reason to reconsider and cause to do some research into what I'm saying.

As for my white privilege, I hate but acknowledge that I have it and I gladly use it to help out anyone I can could needs a hand. Be an ally for us Jews just as most of us are for your community. Sorry for the others, bad apples in every batch I'm afraid.

Actually, fun fact: Tay-Sachs actually can also affect French Canadians of southeastern Quebec, the Old Order Amish of Pennsylvania, and the Cajuns of southern Louisiana. Weird, huh?

Also, I have no idea why you think this is relevant to anything.

Something else to consider is the enemy we have in common, Nazis, would love for you and everyone else to think that white passing Jews are just white because that helps to diminish Jewish culture and make us nothing. Nazis are pretty explicitly the ones that insist that white Jews aren't white. Go ask one, they'll tell you all about it.

Broader white culture, though, has absorbed white Jews the same way it absorbed white Irish people and white Italians and is well on its way to absorbing white latinos too. Whiteness is a very adaptable ideology that is constantly changing to preserve itself, and has no trouble accepting new ethnicities into the white racial group.

As for my white privilege, I hate but acknowledge that I have it and I gladly use it to help out anyone I can could needs a hand. Be an ally for us Jews just as most of us are for your community. Sorry for the others, bad apples in every batch I’m afraid.

Okay, but then what was the point of this discussion? If white Jews have white privilege, then I don't see a reason why Israel can't be identified as a white settler colony. Again, look at the positions of power and wealth in Israel and you'll mostly see white faces. There's a reason for that.

[-] player1@sh.itjust.works 2 points 1 year ago

You have a very weird obsession with this

[-] WHYAREWEALLCAPS@lemmy.world 19 points 1 year ago

Honestly, if he hadn't smack talked them the day after they got that 45 day budget passed, they probably would back him. Hell, if we didn't need to get the big budget passed in 45 days, they'd probably do it just to fuck with the Republicans. Or they could fuck with McCarthy by voting for him and making the GOP think he's cut a secret deal with the Dems.

[-] queermunist@lemmy.ml 6 points 1 year ago

I was actually shocked they didn't back him. I didn't think Democrats had any low they wouldn't stoop for the sake of compromise.
