I have to wonder, last time I checked Canada is a sovereign country, why can trump dictate who we can help and who we can not. My opinion: we should help the Cuban People as much as we can and give the Trumpsters the middle finger salute.

[-] orbitz@lemmy.ca 4 points 2 months ago

I agree but when the bully that gets away with everything makes a demand they should not be appeased. Personally I'd never want to do what they asked even just out of spite, but if taking a country into consideration then I see why concessions are made. It can only last so long though.

I mean, sanctions and blockaids are an important method of diplomacy (as an alternative to war). It worked for ending South African Apartheid.

But the UN has overwhelmingly voted to end the blockaid on Cuba.

In conclusion: sovereignty doesn't make you higher than the UN. But it does make you higher than one country's deranged fascist leader.

Please send them solar panels, wind turbines, and batteries. Not fossil fuels!

[-] kahjtheundedicated@lemmy.world 6 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago)

Unfortunately aircraft still run on fossil fuels, which is a big part of getting goods into the country.

Also ships, but I’m not sure if the blockade is effectively stopping everything, or just oil tankers.

In a somewhat sick kind of way, would be kinda cool if they start using sailing yachts for local trade since they don’t have any fuel.

[-] quick_snail@feddit.nl 1 points 2 months ago

Ships have run on wind for a lot longer than humans have discovered how to make internal combustion engines..

[-] kahjtheundedicated@lemmy.world 5 points 2 months ago

... which I did mention… but there aren’t a whole lot of sail based cargo ships around anymore.

Longer term yeah, moving away from petroleum is obviously the move. But they need stuff now. And again, air travel is a huge problem right now. It’s hard to send aid there when the planes cant refuel. Not impossible, just more of a logistical problem.

[-] quick_snail@feddit.nl 1 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago)

People literally paddled between Florida and Cuba. Crocodiles migrate between the two. They're very close.

Yeah, I'd love to see something like a Gaza flotilla of sail boats going from the Keys to Cuba to deliver aid like renewables

[-] SaveTheTuaHawk@lemmy.ca 2 points 2 months ago

you have no idea how a power grid works.

Cuba already has large solar farms.

[-] quick_snail@feddit.nl 3 points 2 months ago

Decentralized grids is the solution. Other Caribian islands have done it.

Just because the grid is centralized doesn't mean it needs to be that way. You sound old.

[-] maplesaga@lemmy.world 1 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago)

Why not just give them cash so they can buy them from China themselves?

Then China can just spin up another coal plant to sustain the extra demand.

[-] BlameTheAntifa@lemmy.world 4 points 2 months ago

Please go away, MapleMAGA.

[-] maplesaga@lemmy.world 1 points 2 months ago

Isn't that what they're doing, does someone other than China even refine enough rare earth to build them?

[-] mrdown@lemmy.world 11 points 2 months ago

Canada bullshiting again. What cuba need is fuel.

[-] AGM@lemmy.ca 8 points 2 months ago

You really shouldn't be getting downvoted on this. Sending $8 million dollars & no fuel is basically just a PR stunt for the politically shallow. It is bullshit.

[-] mrdown@lemmy.world 4 points 2 months ago

I expected the downvotes . Lemmy communities about specific country are always over protective of their countries. They can't accept a single criticism like cultists. They looks like fools to me

[-] SaveTheTuaHawk@lemmy.ca 2 points 2 months ago

They should get downvoted for ignorance. You cannot run a grid on solar and a few batteries.

Also, Cuba already has large solar farms. 92 of them near completion.

[-] AGM@lemmy.ca 2 points 2 months ago

They need a solution today, not in a few years. Today. The solution today is fuel, either via the blockade being ended or fuel aid being delivered. Canada is neither delivering fuel aid nor even calling out the blockade.

If the US succeeds in overthrowing their government, there's a pretty good chance the electrification effort underway will be going in the bin.

[-] quick_snail@feddit.nl 5 points 2 months ago

No. What they need is solar panels and factories for manufacturing batteries, so they never need fuel.

[-] CanadaPlus@lemmy.sdf.org 5 points 2 months ago

This doesn't say they aren't sending fuel.

[-] mrdown@lemmy.world 3 points 2 months ago

There is a fuel embargo. You really believe thst Canada would ignore it?

[-] ILikeBoobies@lemmy.ca 7 points 2 months ago

The US has an embargo, we don't.

I would hope that we would continue to send fuel to them.

[-] mrdown@lemmy.world 1 points 2 months ago

Trump threatened anybody who does it with tarrifs

[-] HertzDentalBar 6 points 2 months ago

The tariffs that were deamed invalid? Or the new tariffs that will also be deamed invalid?

[-] mrdown@lemmy.world 2 points 2 months ago

You think the dictator in the making Trump will keep respecting the courts?

[-] HertzDentalBar 1 points 2 months ago

Has he ever? Not sure if he's ever not failed to comply properly 😂

[-] ILikeBoobies@lemmy.ca 1 points 2 months ago

I want 0 trade with the Americans so that's a good thing to me.

[-] Slax@sh.itjust.works 1 points 2 months ago

I mean Canada already has tariffs and their Trade Secretary is not backing down, even adding tariffs to the free trade agreements..

[-] CanadaPlus@lemmy.sdf.org 6 points 2 months ago

I mean, apparently they're willing to go against the US on Cuba, per this article. It's not specified which things Cuba needs they'll be sending, but it's something.

[-] mrdown@lemmy.world 6 points 2 months ago

Like Canada claimed to oppose Iraq war while sharing intel with the Americans and providing naval and air support? Canada has always been a disgusting hypocritical country

[-] CanadaPlus@lemmy.sdf.org 3 points 2 months ago
[-] NoneOfUrBusiness@fedia.io 1 points 2 months ago

99% of the time I'd agree with you, but Canada is close enough to Cuba that I can see it happening.

[-] mrdown@lemmy.world 3 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago)

If it was true it would have been mentionned in articles and in Anita annand statements

[-] guynamedzero@piefed.zeromedia.vip 6 points 2 months ago

I always find it frustrating when people say “Washington is doing x” in reference to Washington DC (US capital) and not in reference to Washington (the state). I personally know people who were confused by this and didn’t know that Washington state existed.

If possible, please say the full name of Washington DC, or even just DC.

[-] theacharnian@lemmy.ca 4 points 2 months ago

Oh I get it, it's a bit like how it's super annoying that America is used to refer to the US and American is commonly used to mean Estadounidense. Yea that's frustrating.

[-] Soup@lemmy.world 3 points 2 months ago

People from the US who didn’t know Washington state existed, or elsewhere? It only actually matters if Washington state suddenly goes off the rails, which would be weird. We say “Ottawa” in Canada to refer to the federal government and we all understand what that means because of very obvious context clues.

In general I don’t disagree that being more accurate is a good thing, and “DC” is easier to write, too, but if people need the clarity here then they’re dumb as hell.

[-] guynamedzero@piefed.zeromedia.vip 2 points 2 months ago

Numerous people from the US. It’s not a matter of stupidity, but of education.

[-] Soup@lemmy.world 2 points 2 months ago

There’s bad education and then there’s that. Big yikes.

[-] batmite8675309@lemmy.world 1 points 2 months ago

LOL, now I'm tempted to be a troll when someone bitches about Ottawa setting payments, and state, "I did not know that municipality had the power to determine how much a province receives." or "Mark Sutcliffe must really hate Alberta."

[-] GreyPilgrim@lemmy.ca 4 points 2 months ago

One of the best things we can do as a country right now is helpful acts like these.

These actions show the world Canada can be trusted for the leadership role being thrust upon us.

These random acts of kindness in the face of what's going on show Trump and his masters that love beats everything.

[-] tomiant@piefed.social 3 points 2 months ago

They have GOT to get over Cuba.

USA is like some narcissistic stuck up boyfriend that got dumped in high school and just won't let it go.
