I mean it took a very long time to get him but also the chargers are not about his extra carricular activities... They are about sharing some secrets or something... its a sham

Al Capone was stopped by the IRS. It's something at least.

[-] Warl0k3@lemmy.world 23 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

It's not justice, though. Points for getting him on that, lord knows the US isn't prosecuting for it either, but potentially being done for financial crime instead of the mountains of evidence showing him to be an international rapist pedophile monster is a joke.

For what it's worth, Capone was only stopped by syphilis - he ran the mob just fine from prison until it got so bad he couldn't. Which I admit is a solution I wholeheartedly endorse in this instance, too.

Edit: nope nvm he's been released.

At least that put Capone in jail, I read the expected penalty for Andrew is a fine. Which is nothing to a wealthy man.

So a little public embarrassment and then straight back to a life of wealth and comfort

technically true,

but in reality, they made new IRS law just for him. the rules about declaring illegal income. So if he does, it's a confession, if he doesn't that's a crime that's easier to prove than specific extortion/murders.

it wasn't like they got him for a minor tax offense, but made up new rules just to catch him.

They're creepy and they're kooky...

[-] Lucidlethargy@sh.itjust.works 22 points 2 weeks ago

In the UK you aren't allowed to protest Israel's genocide.

These governments are such trash. Fuck them both.

[-] Grainne@lemmy.dbzer0.com 7 points 2 weeks ago

The UK government is even more hostile to trans people than the US as well. Fuck them both.

[-] Lucidlethargy@sh.itjust.works 1 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

I didn't even know about this. Why the fuck are so many powerful and wealthy people always persecuting minorities that have done absolutely nothing to the system they supposedly represent?

I understand how tribalism and scapegoating works, but how are so many people falling for this?

Every time I hear MAGA people talk about almost anything here in the States, I have to wonder if there are literally worms in their brains like JFK Jr.

[-] dev_null@lemmy.ml 1 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

It's true, the UK government is very anti-trans, but I don't think the people are falling for it as much as in the US. The majority of people in the UK support being able to identify as any gender you want.

It's also an interesting that the UK is portrayed as the very anti-trans place, and rightly so, because the government want to take trans rights away, which is a very loud thing. Meanwhile most countries never gave trans people as many rights and services as UK did (and wants to take away now). So I'm wondering which country is worse for trans people, the one where there are rights, and the government wants to take them away, or the one where trans people are just never even acknowledged as even a topic.

I immigrated to the UK, and when I hear the government wants to take away all the trans care the NHS provides, I think "that's terrible, but wow there is all this trans care?! given by the public health service?! and there is this whole ecosystem of pro-trans organisations? that would never happen where I come from". And my original country never comes up as anti-trans, because the politicians there just don't talk about trans issues at all and there is no support for trans people to take away. Even though realistically you are much worse off as a trans person there than in the UK.

There is a protest in my city every week, what do you mean you can't protest it?

[-] Lucidlethargy@sh.itjust.works 1 points 2 weeks ago

In referring to Palestine Action being labeled a terrorist group. Thousands of people have been arrested for peacefully protesting.

[-] dev_null@lemmy.ml 1 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

That's absolutely fair, it's not preventing you from protesting against Israel though. The protests I see are anti-Israel and pro-Palestine just fine. They just don't mention that particular group.

Which I agree they should be able to do (and thankfully the terrorist classification is being reversed), but I think it's a little disingenuous to say you can't protest against Israel.

[-] fastfomo7@lemmy.dbzer0.com 13 points 2 weeks ago

He just got released what a joke

[-] cynar@lemmy.world 12 points 2 weeks ago

The default in the UK is to be released on bail. The current charges are for leaking documents, and the royals have made it clear they are not going to get in the way. His lawyers would have a field day with the police for not allowing bail, given what he's currently been charged with.

Hopefully that will change, now the investigation is officially open, but it's the nature of our legal system.

[-] PhoenixDog@lemmy.world 6 points 2 weeks ago

A reminder that they got Al Capone for Tax Evasion. Not the murders and racketeering.

Sometimes it doesn't matter what someone is arrested for in the end, as long as they see justice one way or another.

[-] cynar@lemmy.world 4 points 2 weeks ago

We also need to make sure we don't accidentally witch hunt. While I think most of the Epstein files are genuine, there is a possibility of fakes. It would be entirely in his MO to create fake or misleading evidence, when he couldn't get the real thing. The charges need to be backed by other evidence as well, which takes time to gather.

[-] 0_o7@lemmy.dbzer0.com 4 points 2 weeks ago

the royals have made it clear they are not going to get in the way

Of course lad, that's going to show him, after how much jail time he's faced. Oh wait… he's only facing anything because he got caught publicly.

Pathetic royal dick wranglers.

[-] cynar@lemmy.world 6 points 2 weeks ago

In terms of old money politics, they've thrown him to the wolves.

He's effectively gotten old fashioned parole (old European, rather than American). If he disappears, everyone will assume they are involved. They won't want him making them look bad, so will not let him use their resources to flee.

[-] theuniqueone@lemmy.dbzer0.com 12 points 2 weeks ago

Maybe stop glazing UK look at massive crackdowns against Palestine protests or the still extreme police repression of the poor not to mention the ICE similar oppression of migrants which they also have.

[-] maturelemontree@lemmy.zip 6 points 2 weeks ago

Maybe do glaze the UK for doing something that should be the bare minumum, yet still eludes a specific country.

Is it? It's he in prison? Is this justice?

Do not test on your laurels, everyone. We must put them all away for their crimes.
