I swear, this place looks like it could take off like a Ha'tak from Stargate.

My hometown's calling card, lol. That's a really great photo.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Memphis_Pyramid for those who are unfamiliar, it's an interesting building.

[-] WhirlpoolBrewer@lemmy.world 2 points 4 months ago

It's an amazing building! There is a bar at the top and the only way up is with a glass elevator that is terrifying to ride on.

[-] Lembot_0006@programming.dev 9 points 4 months ago

We still build pyramids? Unexpected.

[-] frustrated_phagocytosis@fedia.io 3 points 4 months ago

Does it count as a pyramid if we don't have royalty buried in there?

[-] Lembot_0006@programming.dev 8 points 4 months ago

The tiny geometry gnome in my brain says "yes".

Not too late to address this

[-] EpeeGnome@feddit.online 2 points 4 months ago

Just the one pyramid, actually.

Dunno. I only said that because I couldn't think of any other major modern pyramids and it was an excuse to reference Hot Fuzz. Now that I think about it, there's one on the Louvre in Paris as well, so I was wrong anyway. Pyramids plural was correct.

If you want to know more, 99% Invisible did a podcast episode on the history of the building:

Came to post this. Such a good episode.

Is this the headquarters of Illuminati?

[-] Hackworth@piefed.ca 15 points 4 months ago

It's a Bass Pro Shop... but prolly.

[-] davidyarbrough@programming.dev 10 points 4 months ago

It's an outdoors shop. I'll somewhat grudgingly admit that I like what Bass Pro has done with the place, it's an interesting visit if you're in town and like outdoorsy stuff. It's better than what it used to be, which is abandoned. I am disappointed that they didn't put a giant square conference table in the top for arch-villain quarterly meetings though; if I were planning world domination I don't think I could resist doing it in the zenith of a pyramid.

I visited it when I passed through. I wouldn't visit the city just to see it, but I've got to say it's definitely worth the stop if anyone is in the area and hasn't seen it before. I'm not into hunting and fishing, so I can't speak to the quality or value of the gear for sale. I can, however, say that seeing fishing boats for sale, floating at the dock in a pond, inside a store beside regular retail-style merchandise racks, all beneath the distant pyramidal ceiling is a unique experience. The glass elevator ride to the top and the view of the city was worth the ticket price, at least once. Would recommend.

Edit: Admittedly they sell various other outdoor gear as well that I would have been qualified to have an opinion on, but I was a bit distracted and not actually browsing the inventory.

It's a Bass Pro Shop. So, yes.
