The volume of a cylinder is found using the formula V = πr^2^h. Using π = 5, r = 10 and h = 10. Find the volume V.

Probably a test meant to be done without a calculator.

... at least make it =3

That's the biggest slap in the face here. It's not 3 or 4, but 5. What the fuck

Considering that the r and h are 10, you could still easily do it without calculator, even if the value of pi had plenty of decimals.

You guys are really overestimating the students this test was made for lol

[-] COOLSJ@lemmy.world 4 points 1 year ago

Bruh i had to do this with 3.141 and without calc too

Yeah it's not hard, but if the instructor just wants to test if you can follow directions and plug extremely simple numbers into an equation without a calculator then this is fine. I'd almost expect this on a test for some trade skill, like some 1-2 year certification you know?

~it~ ~could~ ~still~ ~=3~ ~tho~

I also guess that was the intention. But then, why choose an example involving Pi? There are so many ways to test simple multiplications. Books per student, students per class, classes per school, something like that. Or calculate a simple 3D shape which is not round.

That is probably laziness lol

I remember doing multiplication with decimals using lattice multiplication. It's not hard you just need to know how to move the decimal.

Side note, I remember in precalc in high school the teacher marked a student wrong on a test, for showing his work using lattice, because the teacher didn't understand it. The work was right, he showed his work, teacher just didn't know it so it was wrong. Man I hated that teacher.

You gotta learn that school isn't about being correct. It's about obeying authority.

Yeah and i was a defiant little shit in high school. Always going to the exact limits of all the rules we were given. Some of the school security didn't like me, but the teachers did

Pi is a geometric constant, so obviously we're redefining the decimal numbering system to make "1" anchored to a fixed value of π/5 (or simply 1 in our superior new decimal representation).

Don't believe the haters who'll complain about "needing integer number representations". Literally anyone with a basic grasp of fractions will be perfectly fine! Let's illustrate with a few simple examples:

  • "I'll take three-fifths pi gallons of blue slushie, please"
  • "No thanks, I don't need any cups because I actually brought two-fifths pi containers of my own each with three-tenths pi gallons of individual capacity specifically for this purpose".

As you can see, there is no reason to be concerned whatsoever. The system works. It is mathematically elegant.

‘the Speaker accepted another member's recommendation to refer the bill to the Committee on Swamplands, where the bill could "find a deserved grave".’

Lol

Okay, I love the fact that we are so low on traffic currently that it makes perfect sense to reply to weeks old messages, and I am going to work on my inhibitions along those lines.
