What is 2? (lemmy.blahaj.zone)
submitted 4 months ago* (last edited 4 months ago) by FundMECFSResearch to c/mathmemes

Context:

In ZFC set theory (which most of modern maths is built upon). The natural numbers are defined as recursions of empty sets.

Ie. 0 = ∅ (the empty set)

1 = {∅} = {0}

2 = {∅, {∅}} etc…

I'm already so done with this course.

My textbook:

p: "The weather is bad."

Exercise:

Represent "the weather is good" using logical symbols.

Me: How am I supposed to answer that? You didn't give me a letter for that. I guess I'll use q?

Expected answer: ~p

THIS IS LITERALLY THE CLASS ABOUT LOGIC DHDJFBDHDJDHDHDH

Who let neurotypicals write a logic textbook istg

A microblog post by @kareem_carr saying "as soon as i saw they were using asterisks for multiplication symbols, i knew we were in trouble", with an image from the "Office of the United States Trade Representative (Executive Office of the President)" showing the mathematical formula $\Delta \tau_i = \frac{x_i - m_i}{\varepsilon * \varphi * m_i}$. The formula show asterisks (*) instead of multiplication signs (×).
