In the USA M&Ms are an imitation of what are called Smarties in the UK.

[-] Lost_My_Mind@lemmy.world 13 points 5 days ago

Ok, NOW the shower thought makes a lot more sense.

[-] Witchfire@lemmy.world 4 points 5 days ago

We have both in Canada. The difference is that smarties are naturally colored, whereas M&Ms are vibrant thanks to artificial colorings

I forgot they aren't horrid chalky crap outside the US and was like "what??"

[-] serpineslair@lemmy.world 13 points 5 days ago

TIL smarties are horrid chalky crap inside the US, yikes another reason I'm glad I'm not there xD.

Can't say I've tried em, evidently 😅. Though, could be interesting just for the experience.

Had a sleeve of them on my desk prior to my above comment. Idk why people are saying they’re chalky. They’re basically just lightly flavored sugar tablets.

....yay? 😐

As candy goes, that's about as base-level acceptable as it gets. Was it the last thing at the bottom of a candy bowl and you settled for it?

[-] cannedtuna@lemmy.world 2 points 5 days ago

Nah I specifically grabbed those. Legit one of my favorites.

[-] Lost_My_Mind@lemmy.world 6 points 5 days ago

Kids crush them into powder, and snort it like coke.

At least we did in the 80s....

US smarties are the same exact thing as Rockets elsewhere. They're both sugary crack

[-] serpineslair@lemmy.world 1 points 4 days ago

Aint heard of rockets before...

[-] Triumph@fedia.io 5 points 5 days ago

Smarties are sugary. You're thinking of Necco Wafers.

[-] faythofdragons@slrpnk.net 3 points 5 days ago

Rockets are branded as Smarties in the US

[-] Triumph@fedia.io 5 points 5 days ago

Necco Wafers taste like someone took Pepto-Bismol, dehaydrated it, and formed it into discs the size of US quarters.

[-] faythofdragons@slrpnk.net 2 points 5 days ago

Yeah, we've got those in the states too, haha

[-] owenfromcanada@lemmy.ca 5 points 5 days ago

The chalky things are called "Rockets" in Canada.

[-] DeathsEmbrace@lemmy.world 3 points 5 days ago

Rockets are good

[-] TheAlbatross 12 points 5 days ago

They're sugar candies tho??

[-] ryokimball@infosec.pub 11 points 5 days ago

Not outside the US, specifically I think in Canada they are basically M&Ms

[-] TheAlbatross 8 points 5 days ago

Oh, well, then I guess that tracks then.

[-] owenfromcanada@lemmy.ca 4 points 5 days ago

Compared to M&Ms, Smarties have a thicker candy layer. The chocolate is a bit better, but personally I prefer the candy/chocolate ratio in M&Ms.

[-] GiantRobotTRex@lemmy.sdf.org 6 points 5 days ago

Not in the US

A "Showerthought" is a simple term used to describe the thoughts that pop into your head while you're doing everyday things like taking a shower, driving, or just daydreaming. The most popular seem to be lighthearted clever little truths, hidden in daily life.

Here are some examples to inspire your own showerthoughts:

Rules

  1. All posts must be showerthoughts
  2. The entire showerthought must be in the title
  3. No politics
    • If your topic is in a grey area, please phrase it to emphasize the fascinating aspects, not the dramatic aspects. You can do this by avoiding overly politicized terms such as "capitalism" and "communism". If you must make comparisons, you can say something is different without saying something is better/worse.
    • A good place for politics is c/politicaldiscussion
  4. Posts must be original/unique
  5. Adhere to Lemmy's Code of Conduct and the TOS

If you made it this far, showerthoughts is accepting new mods. This community is generally tame so its not a lot of work, but having a few more mods would help reports get addressed a little sooner.

Whats it like to be a mod? Reports just show up as messages in your Lemmy inbox, and if a different mod has already addressed the report, the message goes away and you never worry about it.
