Steam reviews are comedy gold.

[-] The_Picard_Maneuver@lemmy.world 65 points 2 months ago

It deserves all the praise it has received. What an incredible game.

[-] MushuChupacabra@lemmy.world 39 points 2 months ago

I did myself the disservice of watching a synopsis of the game to see what the hype is all about. All spoilers known.

Holy shit am I going to buy the hell out of this game anyway.

[-] azertyfun@sh.itjust.works 18 points 2 months ago

It does have a lot of replay value because the gameplay loop is tight, and the foreshadowing work is so outstandingly tight that every in-game conversation has a second layer of meaning once you know the story twists.

Also they added a photo mode and I kinda wanna do a NG+ just for that.

Macron always has a knack to try to use things popular with younger people to score political gains. Infamously with the ZEvent, for instance.

It is now traditional for them to answer with "Shut your mouth Macron, this isn't about you".

[-] alessandro@lemmy.ca 7 points 2 months ago

Well, with old and elderly people you get Trump, Putin and Netanyahu; so I am fine with broadly politicians to catch younger generations.

[-] thedarkfly@feddit.nl 17 points 2 months ago

Compared to dictators (or wannabe), I get that Macron seems attractive. But he's proven to be pro-rich (taxes on the rich have been drastically cut under Macron) and anti-democratic (he's ignored the result of the last election and nominated a plethora of prime ministers from parties who lost).

[-] axx@slrpnk.net 4 points 2 months ago

And pro police violence. Repeatedly.

[-] alessandro@lemmy.ca 2 points 2 months ago

I am not that much interested in Macron (or any other) political career; I just get the signaling when a bad politician want it easy (to screw people) and go for elderly people instead to put some effort to convince the future generations.

[-] kilgore_trout@feddit.it 3 points 2 months ago

You really think Macron has done good for France?

[-] ZeDoTelhado@lemmy.world 17 points 2 months ago

I do have a question playing this game: how many decided to play with French language and subs? Somehow it feels that is the way intended with this game

[-] nyctre@piefed.social 22 points 2 months ago

Nope, even tho the game is french, the original is English and French is a dub. They even splurged for well known/good english voice actors. But french dub is also good, so you can go for it if you want. Try both for a few minutes and decide which one you want, I guess?

[-] faercol 11 points 2 months ago

Yeah I'm French and I actually played it in English... Mostly for Jennifer English

[-] RustySharp@programming.dev 8 points 2 months ago

in English... Mostly for Jennifer English

They should get Dawn French to do the French dub

Akshully both are dubs, but the script and mocap sessions were done in English. On top of that the French dub was outsourced and the game director and lead writer weren't in the studio like for the English dub, and it shows IMO. Some French lines clearly don't have the same level of direction as the "canonical" dub.

However I will say it's still a better dub than most French dubs. I'd argue the bar is on the floor but the francophone dubbing lobby would draw and quarter me for holding such heretic opinions.

[-] any1th3r3@lemmy.ca 3 points 2 months ago

I've had very little luck with playing games in French lately, recent dubs I've tried all sound like poorly acted téléfilms imo...
That's a shame, because both Plague Tale games, as well as E33 might (could) sound much better in French, but I can't get past the way VA is done when compared to their English counterpart.

[-] pory@lemmy.world 11 points 2 months ago

The English VA is really good and if you don't speak French you will miss some characterizing lines. Combat barks and such aren't subtitled, and neither is what little passive chatter between NPCs there is.

[-] stray@pawb.social 4 points 2 months ago

English Esquie is one of the most delightful things I've ever had the joy of experiencing. He's voiced by the same person in both, but in French he just sounds French. In English he gets to have a French accent. Every character with a French accent is at odds with the main cast in a way that's very flavorful. It just makes all the Frenchness really pop, like mixing sweet and salty.

[-] howrar@lemmy.ca 3 points 2 months ago

I've been told the French is rather mediocre compared to the English.

[-] Kynn@jlai.lu 4 points 2 months ago

I'm french, and I found it really good. But it's only my humble opinion ^^. All my french friends played it in french, and none of them found it bad to my knowledge.

Shut your mouth Macron, this isn't about you

[-] whoisearth@lemmy.ca 7 points 2 months ago

I loved the fight mechanics and I'm sure there was a good story in there if I cared but one thing that really grinded my gears was the goddamn cutscenes. Not only that but the incessant cut scene that leads into another cut scene that leads into another cut scene. Seriously I spent half the game skipping cut scenes.

[-] vaultdweller013@sh.itjust.works 10 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago)

Could be worse, could be a marathon run of the Metal Gear series with a ban on skipping cutscenes. Also the fuck did you expect from an aggressively French JRPG style game, FFS JRPGs are defined by their cutscenes.

I mean, the whole point of the game is the storyline. The combat is really mostly secondary to it.

French president holding to shred of relevancy and noteworthiness tries to coopt national success he had nothing to do with. Now to our main story tonight, is the weather getting colder?

[-] alessandro@lemmy.ca 2 points 2 months ago

Well, in UK the queen was used to make lords people that had great merit for the nation: Sir Sinclair for the quite popular zx spectrum and Sir Terry Prachett for amazing narrative, on turtle, universe he crafted.

I don't remember there was any requirements on political side (queen or parliament) to acknowledge people's merit to the nation.

[-] Lileath 5 points 2 months ago

Even more of a reason for me to never want to play it

[-] LaLuzDelSol@lemmy.world 11 points 2 months ago

Imagine not playing a videogame because some guy in France likes it and he also (and I'm only guessing here, but this is lemmy) supports Israel

[-] dukemirage@lemmy.world 3 points 2 months ago

Macron has done worse.

If you don't like the games that other people make, then why don't you macron?

I just don‘t like the game because it has turn based combat. Like it‘s an RPG but you can‘t demolish foes with reaction skills. Where‘s the fun in that?

[-] blarth@thelemmy.club 13 points 2 months ago

You actually can smoke foes with parries and reactive skills.

[-] RizzRustbolt@lemmy.world 5 points 2 months ago

Now want to try it less Macron has horrible judgement no reason to assume his gaming judgement is different.

[-] apotheotic@beehaw.org 5 points 2 months ago

Its a pretty fab game, idiot endorsement or not

[-] FenrirIII@lemmy.world 3 points 2 months ago

I still cannot get into the mood to finish it. I just got the bouncy giant and moody boy #2, but I'm too zapped to continue. It needs to become an animated series like Arcane
