Star Citizen is built from a heavily modified CryEngine/Lumberyard engine. The hooks for VR were left in there, and players were able to find a workaround to get VR working. However, a few months ago, Star Citizen had to force EAC due to some cheaters wreaking havoc in the servers. This also put a stop to the VR workaround.
They had previously quietly allowed users to bypass EAC in order for Linux players and VR users to play. They were able to flip the switch in EAC to allow Linux users to play, but VR users were left out.
A dev spent some time fixing up the game engine to work with VR again as well as OpenXR to support the latest devices. So, now Star Citizen natively supports VR without any workarounds needed.
