I'll do "See you there :)". In my mind, the emoticon is a much more subtle smile than an emoji.

(Also I'm older than emojis so emoticons come more naturally lol)

Edit: this comic was further down on my feed lol

The first emoji sets were created by Japanese portable electronic device companies in the late 1980s and the 1990s.

Though SoftBank's 1997 emoji set is considered to be the origin of modern emoji.

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

[-] tiramichu@sh.itjust.works 55 points 1 day ago

I agree.

See you there 🙂 <- slightly fake or sarcastic

See you there 😀 <- TOO excited

See you there :) <- Natural, relaxed, and just right

[-] Randelung@lemmy.world 6 points 19 hours ago

🙂 with its hollow stare. You know it's screaming on the inside.

😀 is a psychopath. 😃 is Disney's Psychopath.

Emoticons 4lyf.

Get you friends who will just send "See you there, bitch", affectionately.

[-] Rooster326@programming.dev 2 points 10 hours ago

See you there, bitch lol

For any millennials in the audience... Lol

[-] MachineFab812@discuss.tchncs.de 1 points 4 hours ago* (last edited 4 hours ago)

am millenial. "lol" is for the squares. The rest of us look good in heels, and will smack/kiss a bitch who says otherwise

[-] palordrolap@fedia.io 43 points 1 day ago

I heard the kids are putting a space before the exclamation mark to tone down its immediacy:

See you there !

versus

See you there!

I'm old. I guess it works, but then I'm of the "ellipsis isn't necessarily ominous" generation, so what I think might be completely wrong...

[-] tedd_deireadh@lemmy.world 24 points 1 day ago

That's interesting. Adding a space before the exclamation mark would just make me think it's a typo and not an intentional punctuation choice.

And the the use of the ellipsis is something I've recently seen in some work correspondence, and to me it came off as sarcastic, not ominous. Which was strange as the sender is usually very polite. So this makes a lot more sense if it's a generational thing.

I still don't understand it though. If not sarcasm, ominous ending, or an interruption, what does an ellipsis signify and why not just use a period?

[-] Axolotl_cpp@feddit.it 14 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

It mean an incomplete thought or phrase, in some situation it mean the lack of words, i should make some examples maybe

"They can be used like...

...this"

"I don't really understand... why you did this?" This example show the lack of words for something

It can also mean disappointment/sadness

"I though i was gonna win..."

I had an ex partner get upset because I used a period at the end of an innocuous text. This is among the reasons why they are my least favorite ex. Just a mess of anxiety and arrogance, where they'd worry about bullshit but be completely convinced that they were right and their way of thinking about things was the only sensible way.

Unfortunately they're still distantly connected to the friend group, but luckily I haven't run into them in years.

[-] AlolanYoda@mander.xyz 1 points 6 hours ago* (last edited 6 hours ago)

Do you have a full ranking or is this ex just your least favorite while the others float around the same general score?

[-] jjjalljs@ttrpg.network 1 points 5 hours ago

Hah, a different ex that I'm still friends with responded with "you rank us??"

No, there's not a full ranking. I'm still good friends with 2, there's a lot of ones I have no hard feelings about, and then there's this one stinker.

[-] Rooster326@programming.dev 2 points 10 hours ago

When in doubt. Sunglass emoji it out. 😎

[-] MeowerMisfit817@lemmy.world 1 points 12 hours ago

Yes, I use these keymojis in the end of phrases online to not risk the situations on the comic

[-] ivanafterall@lemmy.world 2 points 18 hours ago

Then they'll think I don't know how to use correct punctuation at the end of a sentence!

[-] HeyThisIsntTheYMCA@lemmy.world 6 points 16 hours ago

See you there (╬ಠ益ಠ)

[-] MeowerMisfit817@lemmy.world 3 points 12 hours ago

See you there ᕙ( •̀ ᗜ •́ )ᕗ

I work so hard to break this habit since an editor told me about distinctive "feminine" traits in writing. Basically, ways women try to lessen the impact of statements, ie:

"You might like this restaurant, DeLucca's, I heard it's supposed to be good !" vs. "Let's go to DeLucca's tonight."

Solution:

"I'm going to DeLucca's at 8 for all you can eat pasta whether you join me or not~"

[-] MirthfulAlembic@lemmy.world 14 points 1 day ago

TIL my natural writing style has distinctly feminine traits.

[-] SoleInvictus 5 points 1 day ago

Same, though mine wasn't always like that.

[-] Wren@lemmy.today 2 points 15 hours ago

It was my copy editor's take, not necessarily mine, though I took it to heart for a while. It had less to do with my being a chick and more related to my anxiety and depression.

Here's an interesting blog on it, one of many perspectives: https://debuk.wordpress.com/2016/03/06/do-women-and-men-write-differently/

[-] Master167@lemmy.world 30 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

This is why I never use punctuation anywhere You never know who is reading things and I cant let anyone be left out

[-] Thekingoflorda@lemmy.world 13 points 1 day ago

i agree but i also dont use capitalization because that can also only go wrong so i think its best to just not use it dont want to come over as to aggressive or formal

Let's eat grandma

Let's eat, grandma.

There is a real need for punctuation.
