President Donald Trump's administration wants the International Criminal Court to amend its founding document to ensure it does not investigate the Republican president and his top officials, a Trump administration official said, threatening new U.S. sanctions on the court if it did not.

Threatening sanctions against the ICC if they investigate you. How to know you are the wrong side of history 101.

[-] Washedupcynic@lemmy.ca 20 points 3 days ago

As an American, I beg the ICC not to capitulate and investigate the fuck out of the entire trump administration.

[-] LostWanderer@fedia.io 99 points 4 days ago

Honestly, that is when you start the prosecution of Trump...This is a sign that the US Government is flailing about like an absolute loon, these homegrown fascists have a lot to lose if Trump is properly prosecuted.

[-] village604@adultswim.fan 3 points 4 days ago

I don't think the ICC wants the US to invade them.

[-] LostWanderer@fedia.io 2 points 4 days ago

I don't think the US government will be stupid enough to make themselves the proper enemy of the world.

[-] village604@adultswim.fan 13 points 4 days ago

Have you seen the current administration?

[-] I_Jedi@lemmy.today 2 points 3 days ago

Oh I think some in the US are delusional enough to think they can take the entire world.

[-] fartographer@lemmy.world 1 points 3 days ago

What are we going to do, stop invading ourselves?

For realsies, though, as an American, it's hard to comprehend just how massive and far-reaching our military is. We are a terrifying threat to all mankind.

[-] FaceDeer@fedia.io 94 points 4 days ago

Whenever I've done nothing wrong, I like to make that clear by going down to the courthouse and threatening judges not to charge me with anything.

[-] Bonesince1997@lemmy.world 19 points 4 days ago

I just tell law people, "I am the law," and that usually works out for me.

[-] Flamekebab@piefed.social 15 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago)

I dredd to think what you tell people when you've actually broken the law

[-] merc@sh.itjust.works 6 points 4 days ago

This, but more "I like to send my army down to the courthouse". This is the kind of thing you can only get away with if you think you can successfully intimidate the court into not going after you.

[-] FreshParsnip@lemmy.ca 4 points 4 days ago

Can you imagine a random innocent person just going to the courthouse out of the blue and trying to blackmail judges to not charge them with anything

[-] Treczoks@lemmy.world 57 points 4 days ago

That's exactly why the world needs a strong and capable ICC.

[-] froh42@lemmy.world 27 points 4 days ago

And this is why we not only need to reduce our dependence on China in the long run but also our dependence on the US.

There's just no way a sovereign state live while depending on US monopolies.

[-] Wilco@lemmy.zip 67 points 4 days ago

I hate what the US has become under MAGA.

[-] rammer@sopuli.xyz 43 points 4 days ago

So you've never heard of the American Service-Members' Protection Act, known informally as the Hague Invasion Act enacted in 2002. Which protects American war criminals by invading the Hague if necessary.

[-] TankovayaDiviziya@lemmy.world 11 points 4 days ago

Trump and MAGA is really just showing what US has always been, which the country pretends not to be.

[-] P1nkman@lemmy.world 14 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago)

Jesus Christ... America needs to be bonked in the head until they start having some common sense.

[-] BarneyPiccolo@lemmy.today 6 points 3 days ago

Yeah, sure. If somehow Trump, or any other MAGA like Miller or Hegseth, ends up in the box at The Hague, there is no way that the military will crank up to rescue him. He'll be on his own. There might be a lot of PedoCon squealing, but that will just be funny.

[-] IronBird@lemmy.world 26 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago)

is it bad i'm just kinda glad they finally went completely masks-off?

republicans used to be able to atleast pretend they werent bloodthirsty psychopaths when the cameras were rolling, and dems could passably act as controlled opposition when it was their turn to play pretend.

trump is just so batshit stupid and sociopathic that the entire facade is undone.

[-] aesthelete@lemmy.world 21 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago)

I understand this take, but honestly, there are things missing from it.

I think, like Vonnegut wrote, that we are what we pretend to be, and when we let them as a society get away with not even pretending to be good people...we worsen society overall.

There is another element to this as well, IMO, which is that people are mostly animals: monkey see, monkey do. When people see these psychopaths in high-powered positions getting away with whatever they want, they are more likely to model that behavior as well.

I'd rather have a society where everyone is pretending to be nice over one where people feel free to be the absolute worst version of themselves. I also think that being who you are pretending to be has a good side. People can "pretend" to be good and become better because of it.

People think that the more these people are obviously evil, the less the public will agree with them and the more precarious they'll make the entire escapade. I think that the 2024 election and all of the events of 2025 have proven that notion is a dangerous fiction.

[-] kami@lemmy.dbzer0.com 5 points 4 days ago

I've been of the same idea of the other user, but you have a very good point here.

[-] samus12345@sh.itjust.works 3 points 3 days ago

Not that it did any good. He was re-elected.

[-] RizzRustbolt@lemmy.world 20 points 3 days ago

"Why would we prosecute him?"

"J-j-just don't!"

[-] Olhonestjim@lemmy.world 14 points 3 days ago

As an American, No.

The US has had the Hague Invasion act on the books as law since 2002. Trump is once again showing us the roadmap to American Fascism has been here a while just waiting for someone to see how far it goes.

[-] the_riviera_kid@lemmy.world 39 points 4 days ago

Well thats one way to admit your are guilty.

[-] ininewcrow@lemmy.ca 21 points 4 days ago

What is the deal with this orange orangutan? The rightwing conservative movement can throw him under the bus and get a new idiot to lead their movement .... so why hang the fate of your movement on this moron? Seriously ... they could find a younger, stronger more charismatic individual to lead them that would be ten times more dangerous than this aging orange deformed sea lion.

[-] Lodespawn@aussie.zone 9 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago)

MAGA and charisma don't really seem to have any overlap. Miller is some kind ghouls, Vance is charmless schlub, Hegseth is a Neonazi used car salesman, Bondi is the Karen meme brought to life, Patel is clearly some kind of moron in spite of somehow achieving a law degree, Kennedy is also some sort of Nepo-moron, Oz is a scheister and snake oil salesman .. it goes on.

You could look outside the admin but even those clowns have the likeability of a building site portaloo. Like what the fuck is wrong with Jesse Watters? He looks like a possessed ventriloquist dummy and he has the morals of someone who is devoid of a soul. Musk and Theil are detached from reality, I mean Theil is literally running around given lectures on the end times.

Kirk was about as close as they seem to be able to get to a functioning human being and his ideas and morals were straight out of Mein Kampf and the KKK code of conduct.

[-] vaultdweller013@sh.itjust.works 9 points 4 days ago

In theory they could and I think that's what they were setting Kirk to be once Trump croaks, but then his neck did that thing. A lot of the problem is that the current crop of right wingers both the base and the leaders are fucking lunatics that are broadly crippled by their own egos and madness.

Just look at their propagandists, it's gone from Glenn Beck and Rush Limbaugh to fucken Asmingold and Catturd. Sure the old ones were still just as horrific and stupid but at least they vaguely attempted to be respectable. I think this devolution has been broadly effective across the board, from the highest elements like Musk and Thiel to the lowest dregs listening to some inane podcaster on the way to work.

I legit don't think they have anyone outside of Trump who can rally their base on a unified level anymore, so they stick to him hoping they can solidify their gains before the whole damned thing implodes.

You did read where they said charismatic, right?

Vance's "charisma" couldn't fight it's way out of a paper bag.

[-] Maeve@kbin.earth 4 points 4 days ago

The president had no rizz for us and tons for maga voters. Plus that's the default if they yeet the president or he dies.

[-] floofloof@lemmy.ca 8 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago)

The aging sea lion enables the Stephen Millers to go about their nasty business while everyone is looking elsewhere. That's one way he's dangerous. The other is that he's a threatened malignant narcissist with dementia and diminishing impulse control, and one of the world's most powerful armies.

[-] FreshParsnip@lemmy.ca 13 points 4 days ago

What the fuck is this shit? This is a fucking stick up!

[-] Thedogdrinkscoffee@lemmy.ca 14 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago)

Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law.

[-] blitzen@lemmy.ca 11 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago)

Counter with a demand for a bribe not to investigate Trump. Then investigate him anyway. What possible jurisdiction could such an “agreement” even be upheld?

[-] palordrolap@fedia.io 10 points 4 days ago

Sounds like a perfect opportunity to bring the court case forward, and when he inevitably doesn't turn up (not that he would have if everything ran to the original timetable), make the finding in absentia, presumably "guilty" but at least worse than it would be if he'd bothered to turn up, and then...

Sanctions? Heck. What else do we have to hold him to account? An ever bigger tariffs war? Forcibly close US embassies and consulates? Seize US assets?

It'd be a fine line to prevent the Big (cutter of) Cheese from bugging out and declaring war.

[-] TheReturnOfPEB@reddthat.com 7 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago)

that is extortion covered up with the word "pledge".

the media is complicit.

[-] kmartburrito@lemmy.world 6 points 4 days ago

It's a trap! Don't do it ICC!

[-] chosensilence@pawb.social 5 points 4 days ago

let them do it. make them the villains to the world.
