Can't wait for ads to be grotesquely injected into any video on big streaming sites. If you don't want reruns of Cheers to have distracting ads for Rings of Power you better spring for Prime Platinum. Even the heroes at uBlock Origin are going to have a hard time filtering out injected ads on some YouTuber's bedroom wall.

Such a waste of R&D resources

Not when the only metric considered is ROI.

You see it first they'll do it with carefully chosen surfaces....

Then I'll just let AI do it randomly, Before long an incredibly emotional scene we'll get a tasteless ad.

Who wants to be watching a dog get put down in Marley and me, only to be taken out of it when you see an advert on the back wall for... Idk.... Trojan condoms?

[-] Tangent5280@lemmy.world 39 points 1 week ago

The dogs gonna die anyway, why not fuck it before it gets cold?

Trojan, for all your animal fucking needs.

John Wick: I'm coming for you!

...wait...

I vaguely remember seeing ads on cliff faces etc in movies 15 years ago on television, but I think they stopped using them very quickly. Is this just a comeback of a failed test?

This is the inevitable next step. YouTube is looking at doing this too, where ads would be served as part of the same stream id as the content (eg your page wouldn’t refresh and the ad would be cut into the video itself) but they have to make the player work with changing states without refreshing the page across all platforms and it puts a lot more stress on CDNs (plus sponsor block would still be a method to defeat, although not as effective).

But integration of the ads more deeply into the content has always been the goal. That’s why product placement exists. The fault of commercials is that people can simply disengage - go to the bathroom, talk to friends, fuck around on phone, etc. but if the ad is part of the content they have to see it if they want to engage with it. You lose the ability to shill as effectively (unless you do the youtuber paid segment thing, which makes your ads programmatically skippable again eg sponsorblock) but you gain an ad that is practically unblockable unless the show is essentially censored.

Advertisers are scum. Destroy all advertisers. Admen are the cancer that destroy society. Every cool thing has advertisers encroach in on it once people realize how cool it is and then they destroy it - radio, tv, newspapers, books, the internet, literally any public space, etc. if you work in advertising you should be ashamed of yourself and your parents definitely feel like they went wrong somewhere

Bill Hicks Recorded live at the Dominion Theatre, London, 1992:

By the way, if anyone here’s in advertising or marketing... kill yourself. [audience approval] Thank you. Just a little thought... Kill yourself. Seriously though, if you are [in advertising/marketing], do [kill yourself — laughter] ... There's no rationalisation for what you do and you’re Satan's little helpers, OK? Kill yourself, seriously. You’re the ruiner of all things good, seriously... No, this is not a joke. You're going: “there's gonna to be a joke coming”. There's no fucking joke coming. You are Satan’s spawn filling the world with bile and garbage. You are fucked and you are fucking us. Kill yourself. It's the only way to save your soul. Kill yourself. [applause, laughter] ... I know all the marketing people are going, “he's doing a joke”... There’s no joke here whatsoever. Suck a tail pipe, hang yourself, borrow a gun from a Yank friend. I don't care how you do it. Rid the world of your evil fucking machinations.

I know what all the marketing people are thinking right now too, "Oh, you know what Bill's doing, he's going for that anti-marketing dollar. That's a good market, he's very smart." [laughter] Oh man, I’m not doing that, you fucking evil scumbags. "Ooh, you know what Bill's doing now, he's going for the righteous indignation dollar. That's a big dollar. A lot of people are feeling that indignation. We've done research. Huge market. He's doing a good thing." Goddammit, I'm not doing that, you scumbags. Quit putting a goddamm dollar sign on every fucking thing on this planet! "Ooh, the anger dollar. Huge. Huge in times of recession. Giant market. Bill's very bright to do that." God, I'm just caught in a fucking web. "Ooh, the trapped dollar, big dollar, huge dollar. Good market. Look at our research. We see that many people feel trapped. If we play to that and then separate them into the trapped dollar..." God, how do you live like that? I bet you sleep like fucking babies at night, don't you? "What did you do tonight honey?" "Oh, we made ah, we made ah, arsenic ah, childhood food now, goodnight." [lies down and snores] "Yeah, we just said you know is your baby really too loud? You know?" [snores] "Yeah, it'll... you know the mums will love it." [snores] [stands up] Sleep like fucking children, don't you? This is your world isn't it?

I've been ad-free for long enough at this point that I feel physically assaulted when I see one (at a friend's house or whatever). It's insane that we ever thought that was ok, and it's become worse.

At this point, adblock is a survival measure. Piracy is self-defense. The first presidential candidate who campaigns on legalizing graffiti on billboards and mandating their eventual removal gets my vote. Burn it all.

[-] BattleGrown@lemmy.world 26 points 1 week ago

Ads are against human rights. They manipulate your feelings and force you to make biased choices. They should be banned.

I can't even watch sports in real time. I have to let it buffer so I can fast forward through breaks and such.

Still a lot of ads on uniforms and all over the stadium, but it's mostly the audio (that is often louder than what you're watching) and the break in continuity for commercial breaks that pisses me off the most.

[-] WoodScientist@lemmy.world 6 points 1 week ago

What's worse is this even makes attending the game in person miserable. I know many very passionate college football fans who show up hours before the game to hang out with friends, and then more times then not end up leaving the game itself early. Why? Because the game itself is a drag. If a game is televised, they add extra breaks to the game to accommodate ads. The game gets stretched out from something of reasonable length to some absurd 3-4 hour long slog. People then only stick around if the winner remains unclear. If the games were a more reasonable 2 hour length, with more engaging and constant action, then most folks would stay to the end.

It doesn't appear they're doing live recoding of the video, they mention how intensive that is, so the overlay is likely just some js fuckery is my guess. Also the setup is a cooking show filmed from a single camera angle with limited panning. I don't think this will be hard to block and I don't see it invading many videos just yet.

[-] Acamon@lemmy.world 10 points 1 week ago

Its definitely just proof of concept for now, but it seems a grim, if inevitable, step in the war of ads vs adblockers.

[-] rdri@lemmy.world 20 points 1 week ago

Behold, here is the screenshot of an example result from the included paper.

What do we have on a kitchen wall? But of course, a banner for an upcoming Streaming TV show.

[-] Acamon@lemmy.world 15 points 1 week ago

Not only is it distracting and disgusting, but it starts normalising ads everywhere. Cigarettes were digitally removed so as to not set a bad example for kids. But letting them think that it's perfectly normal to have glowing ads decorating the walls of your workplace is fiiiine.

[-] rdri@lemmy.world 5 points 1 week ago

Brb gonna buy some RGB ads from AliExpress to decorate my bathroom...

[-] AnUnusualRelic@lemmy.world 6 points 1 week ago

This looks astonishingly bad. A simple banner at the bottom would an improvement at this point.

[-] Mr_Dr_Oink@lemmy.world 20 points 1 week ago

Ads are way past the point of pissing me off so much that i just block my ears and close my eyes until they go away.

Its fucking disrespectful to expect people to just be ok with having that shit shoveled into their eye sockets.

Amazon is a tool to me to get the things i want based on need for things that i am doing or to replace things that are broken. I am not window shopping there. I am not browsing things. I know what i need. I find the cheapest one with the highest rating and buy it.

Ah, a new Invention in the Asshole-Technology Department. Satan has a very special place in hell for the Managers who decided on this and he will place an order on this exact technology just for them to enjoy it non-stop. Forever.

[-] Swemg@lemmy.world 16 points 1 week ago

Thought about that about 10 years ago. There was already patents on this

[-] Assassassin@lemmy.dbzer0.com 15 points 1 week ago

I wish Amazon wasn't so decentralized, it makes it so hard to just burn it all down.

[-] Hacksaw@lemmy.ca 10 points 1 week ago

[-] njordomir@lemmy.world 14 points 1 week ago

Inb4 someone writes a program and calls it AdblockAI. It gets trained on the shape of corporate logos and on the fly in-paints those regions of the screen to remove the logos.

On that same note, how about AR glasses that put black bars over ads and logos you encounter in real life so companies don't get to subliminally advertise at you.

[-] bcgm3@lemmy.world 7 points 1 week ago

Fast forward 100 years, and we'll be working on anti-ad glasses that counteract the Meta glasses that counteract the anti-ad glasses that counteract the Elon eye implants. 😔

This was in June 2023? Or am I missing something?

Wouldn’t be surprised if this was the garbage tech powering the NHL board ads.

[-] BanMe@lemmy.world 7 points 1 week ago

They started doing it with cereal boxes and other products in Seinfeld reruns years ago.
