You wouldn't believe how surprised I was that you could just buy them as a regular person. Somehow it felt like only doctors are allowed to have these. You can't have that at home.

Well, we do now, but it feels wrong.

A few colourful bent wires and beads? I remember seeing them in a few other places too, I assume it's the cheapest thing they can get that is reasonably hard to break and steall.

It's definitely about the fact it's a nice self-contained structure. The beads are locked in and can't get lost.

This could have been a complete lie, but I was told they have those types of toys because they are easy to sanitize.

I assumed it was because it helps develop fine motor skills. Also bright colors and contrasts are a visual stimulant.

No way, lots of corners, germs cluster in the holes on the beads that then get spread the whole length of the wire, etc.

It might be marketed as easy to sanitize because it's all non-porous but in reality it's a germ trap.

My opticians has had one for years.

I've been going since I was a kid, I've played with it each time I've been waiting to be seen to.

I still do if there's no kids.

I'm 40

What do you do with it? I've moved the beads around but it doesn't give me any pleasure

This comment with no context: ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

Either:

Put all the beads to one side of the coloured bar and try and get them to the other side in one flick of the bead.

Or,

Try and get the beads from one end to the other without touching the metal, like one of those old boomer games you get at village fêtes

[-] brbposting@sh.itjust.works 8 points 1 day ago

Hehehe gonna risk the germs and go for it next time

[-] blimthepixie@lemmy.dbzer0.com 11 points 1 day ago

I don't think the germs will mind

[-] Mouselemming@sh.itjust.works 7 points 1 day ago

The reason this toy is in doctors' waiting rooms is that it's easily disinfected. Bring spray or wipes or use their hand sanitizer and tissues. Because it may have been awhile since anyone did.

[-] affenlehrer@feddit.org 1 points 21 hours ago

Ah, the flicking thing might be fun. I've always hated the don't touch the metal games. Thank you.

  • Probably cheap as dirt.
  • Entertains very small kids who are statistically going to be the loudest, most impatient ones.
  • Engaging for those small kids neurodevelopmentally.
  • Hard to damage.
  • Not ingestible; hard to otherwise hurt yourself or others with it.
  • Can put it basically wherever and even screw it down onto a table.
  • Too big for someone (especially a kid) to steal.
  • Very quiet even if you're playing very aggressively with it.
  • Cross-cultural (e.g. no language involved).
  • Not consumable like crayons.

It's got too many things going for it.

Additionally these aren’t likely to break within the week, unlike most children’s toys I’ve bought in the past couple of years
