I’ve experienced this with other books, and I’d only like to point out, or maybe remind you, that needing time to sit with what you’ve read means it’s actually having an impact. If you were instead coming here saying “it was a real page turner, I flew through it” I would probably think you’re either a creep or so desensitized to the suffering of others that you have lost your empathy. Letting myself have a hard time getting through books like this helps me remind myself I’m human.
This is a very good point, yes. Thank you for your insight.
I’ve read the sample and have yet to buy the book for that same reason. She’s the only one who does anything about the things that happen to her, while the other people in her life don’t care or actively harm her.
Her courage and energy to fight against what she suffered is what also motivates me to read her book. What made me write this post is a section where she describes pointing out to her whole family that her father sexually abused her as a child, and no one did a fucking thing, even after her dad beating her to the point where her lips were split open.
It's so hard to read and actually absorb what is written.
Right? And all the UTIs etc which are a classic sign something is wrong and she wasn’t taken to the doctor, just to the group home…
Take a break and read Just Because it Happened to You Doesn’t Make it Interesting. It’s absolutely hilarious.
I'm not reading Nobodys Girl but I had a similar experience.
I read Lolita in my 20s and found it a beautifully written text. I reread it in my 30s and couldn't get through it because of the subject matter. I guess I developed empathy.
I don't think you're dishonoring the author by giving up if its a bit too much
