The Manga (most recent editions are referenced):

Gulhati, Sahashi K, and Manoj Datta. Geotechnical Engineering. New Delhi, Tata Mcgraw-Hill, 2005.

Have a looooooooooooooooong train ride ahead. I'm absolutely grabbing these off Anna's archive.

Why do you need to study turbines? We’re not studying airplanes? Shouldn’t it be like thermodynamics or even just physics?

[-] brucethemoose@lemmy.world 10 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago)

For airbending? Yeah, atmospheric science and fluid dynamics is probably the better manga.

[-] iloveDigit@piefed.social 3 points 3 days ago

Could be fluid dynamics but that's already water. Maybe they should be hydraulics and pneumatics or something

[-] CookieOfFortune@lemmy.world 3 points 3 days ago

Fluid dynamics could apply to both air and water.

[-] massive_bereavement@fedia.io 1 points 3 days ago

Fluid dynamics are evil.

[-] Sidhean@piefed.social 1 points 2 days ago

Airbenders fly now?

Doctorate material on sub-elements:

  • Metallurgy and crystallography (metalbending).

  • Volcanism (lavabending).

  • Circulatory systems (bloodbending).

  • Electrostatics and plasma physics (lightingbending).

  • Quantum mechanics (spirtbending and astral projection).

As a mechanical engineer, I am the Avatar.

[-] KittyCat@lemmy.world 3 points 2 days ago

I've read 3/4 of those, heat and mass transfer was evil.

[-] ZILtoid1991@lemmy.world 3 points 2 days ago

Where's Metal Working 101 and Basics of Electrophysics?

[-] ryedaft@sh.itjust.works 7 points 3 days ago

They are in the wrong order 😔

And if you flipped the top image you could have them in order + a fifth book for an extra joke layer

[-] elderorb@feddit.nl 4 points 3 days ago

Maybe aerodynamics for boomerang?

[-] CookieOfFortune@lemmy.world 2 points 3 days ago

Biochemistry for the blood bending.

[-] ryedaft@sh.itjust.works 1 points 3 days ago

Uh, Stryer's 4th is very pretty and the name sounds like destroyer. Doesn't make him a punchline though :(

[-] dejected_warp_core@lemmy.world 2 points 2 days ago

That reading list might just make the series unwatchable.

Magic/superpowers and thermodynamics usually don't mix.

[-] Emi@ani.social 4 points 3 days ago

I wonder if there is a show where they explore the impact of the bending or just magic in general. Basically Dr.stone but with bending/magic. I love seeing this stuff being used with scientific intent. The nation is basically steam punky.

[-] brucethemoose@lemmy.world 2 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

Ashamed but not ashamed to admit it, but I have quite a fascination with this, and am working/thinking on a fanfic that explores Avatar lore more scientifically. A major perspective is through a Zaofu engineer-type character who looks at spirits, his own bending, and other lore like the portals or vines more scientifically.

That’s where my brain goes. Shrug.

I was hoping we’d get a “bender engineer” character in canon, but that doesn’t appear to be the direction they’re going.
