Strange New Werthers
Never heard of that before.
But neither had l of root beer, before DS9 or so.
So is it another one of those US-defaultism things still present in the 24th century?
I find them slightly annoying in Trek, but try to ignore them.
Werther's is a German candy and at least popular in Europe and the US

Werthers original are German candies, and I’ve definitely heard jokes about old people liking them (or campino Früchte, or something similar) in Germany. Root beer is a North American thing though
You're not really a proper old person unless you are offering Werthers Originals and blue ribbons at every opportunity.
Can confirm French of a certain age would've grown up seeing the commercials on TV and eating them occasionally.

Oh. I now just learned that butterscotch has nothing to do with whisky, but seems to be just the english word for "caramel" or so...
And I also know the old "Werther's" commercials.
So, they are apparently international.

Butterscotch is far superior to ordinary caramel.
Regardless how good it might be, it would quite certainly be a letdown for me now, as it apparently doesn't contain scotch...
And if you are talking about Werther's: I am not particularly fond of that, there are superior types of caramel imho.

Eh, it's old peoples candy. Werther's originals are much the same and they're definitely not American. Could be a naming thing, root beer in au and nz is usually called sarsaparilla for example
Thanks for the Sarsaparilla tip. As this is in some form also available in East Asia, I may have a chance finding it in an asia market, of which we have lots around here!
Just be careful as we use the name interchangeably but it may NOT be the same thing. I've had sars that tastes like AWS root beer...i've also had sars that tastes more like chinotto

The root beer thing sounds so surreal to me, but it really shouldn't.
For a long time I thought it to be just a made up thing, like Saurian Brandy or so.
But I would like to at least taste it once. Must ask at our local US store if it has some...
Look for the brand 1919. they're fantastic, but not the best since that title belongs to a local pop factory in my state. Mug is mid and a&w is only good at the restaurant
I most frequently have A & W; it's pretty rare we get anything else. I don't think I've had a lot of Mug; I've certainly had some before, but it feels like I see more A & W and Barq's around my area. I don't think I've ever actually been to an A & W; all the Las Vegas locations had been closed for years (and still are) back when I lived in Vegas, and there's only 1 in the entirety of the Phoenix area where I current live.
Honestly, for me, root beer is root beer. Also, I rarely drink it as a standalone beverage these days; I mostly just use it in root beer floats. I'd only really choose it if there was no Dr. Pepper around or I was avoiding caffeine.

I won't even bother trying root beer. It's American and thus probably loaded with sugar beyond belief.
In my opinion, it's not that worth it as a beverage; it's best enjoyed in a root beer float. Of course, that makes it even more sugary, but it's at least a pleasurable experience of texture.
we were actually taught in nursing school that sense of taste fades with age and that sugar / sweetness receptors are pretty much all that holds up after a while.
yo but like. them butterscotch hard candies are pretty kickass, no joke.
