I have no idea what I'm seeing here.

[-] Sinkbath@lemmy.today 76 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

It’s an apple Magic Mouse and its new battery backup.

[-] PlatinumSf@pawb.social 17 points 1 year ago

iPhone 15 pro USB C charging a Apple Magic mouse (lightning port located on the bottom).

(lightning port located on the bottom).

Wow. And I thought I had seen bad design before. It's rare to have a wireless device that is entirely disabled when charging.

[-] SkinnyTimmy@lemm.ee 26 points 1 year ago

It's so people don't just leave the cable in so it always looks clean and slick.

...fucking hell

I know plenty of headphones that can't be used while charging, but that's often because it would be inconvenient to use simultaneously

[-] Kuolematon@sopuli.xyz 1 points 1 year ago

That was one of the main reasons why I sold my Sony headphones and replaced them with Airpods Max. Charging the headphones while in use isn’t really any more inconvenient than using wired headphones would be.

[-] Natanael@slrpnk.net 1 points 1 year ago

My Sonys can't be used with Bluetooth when charging but you can use 3.5 mm audio input so they act like wired when charging. Probably because they're using a fairly standard Bluetooth chipset which also controls charging

[-] mnrockclimber@lemmy.sdf.org 1 points 1 year ago

To be fair, I charge my Magic Mouse once a month and it takes less than an hour. Throwing it on the charger overnight when I leave for the work day isn’t a huge deal.

[-] jaybone@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago

How does the phone know not to charge itself by draining the mouse?

[-] Seudo@lemmy.world 5 points 1 year ago

Doesn't look like any sort of fruit I've seen!

That's not even all of the bullshit.

In every other mouse the sensor is at the center of the body. On magic mouse the sensor is at the front under your fingers as you can see in the OP thumbnail.

That makes it very hard to adapt to when you're coming off of other mice. When you're moving the mouse you better not slightly rotate it out of habit and ergonomics because the cursor will move weird.

I really tried giving it a shot because I like apple gestures. They work fabulously well on the trackpad. The magic mouse is garbage in every category really.

[-] aeronmelon@lemm.ee 9 points 1 year ago

I have been using LogiTech mice since 1994 and I don't intend to stop until I'm dead.

If LogiTech goes bankrupt, I will spend the rest of my life buying used mice.

[-] superterran@lemmy.world 3 points 1 year ago

Logitech definitely doesn't deserve this level of brand loyalty but I basically feel the same way

[-] SnipingNinja@slrpnk.net 6 points 1 year ago

I like the idea of magic mouse gestures but I'll never use it because of gestures vaguely at Apple

[-] ICastFist@programming.dev 2 points 1 year ago

"You unworthy peasant, you should be grateful that our products even work under your dirty, uncouth hands!" - Apple, probably

[-] Surp@lemmy.world 27 points 1 year ago

The mouse charging port is on purpose so you buy two mice. Apple sucks guys stop pretending they do much to benefit you. When you buy a new iMac it comes with one charging cable for two devices lol.

[-] ParadoxSeahorse@lemmy.world 9 points 1 year ago

The design hasn’t changed since it was AA batteries; it was not designed with the rechargeable battery pack in mind.

The worst you can say really is that it was a lazy upgrade, which is totally valid.

My guess is they didn’t want to redesign the top surface for aesthetics or charitably, perhaps technical reasons to do with the combo touch / click area at the front, and the front is the only place you’d want a port.

[-] ParadoxSeahorse@lemmy.world 6 points 1 year ago

Could also be the sensor, smack bang in between the batteries and where you’d want the port… they should’ve just redesigned it, but they probably thought everybody should go trackpad so why bother

This mouse was released when Apple favored a clean design over everything else. While i don't agree with that decision, it lasts for days with just a couple of minutes of charging. Getting people to buy it twice just for that reason had nothing to do with it, who in their right mind would do that?

[-] Surp@lemmy.world 5 points 1 year ago

Ok apple employee browsing lemmy lol

I explained the reason for it and said i don't agree with it but i guess next time i'll just leave you braindead haters to it...

[-] Donebrach@lemmy.world 3 points 1 year ago

I can tell you as someone who is forced to work professionally on a Mac this is by far the stupidest design choice the company has ever made. It’s a lightning port, could easily be fit into the front of the mouse with a basic alteration to the body. I have a backup mouse for when my mouse dies in the middle of working and I don’t wanna stop and wait 20 mins to charge the damn mouse. I also have a wired dell mouse but it only supports up-down scrolling so I prefer to just have two magic mice.

Totally agree, I guess the horizontal scrolling is its only redeeming quality. I did not now it was a lightning connector, that makes it even worse. If I remember correctly you can thank Johnny Ive for this shit.

[-] RaivoKulli@sopuli.xyz 5 points 1 year ago

I thought it was to force people to use it as a wireless mouse and not just leave it plugged in all the time. Or so someone said. Still annoying but not really on the level of "we're trying to force you to buy two".

[-] clearedtoland@lemmy.world 21 points 1 year ago

Steve Jobs is seething right now…

[-] scytale@lemm.ee 21 points 1 year ago

Thanks, this post reminded me to charge my mouse before I forget and find it dead tomorrow when I actually need it.

[-] reallynotnick@lemmy.world 8 points 1 year ago

It only needs like a 3min charge to get through a work day, so it's not completely terrible if you do forget at least.

there's a dead mouse! get rid of it

[-] lazynooblet@lazysoci.al 7 points 1 year ago

Is the charging port on the underside? So you can't use it whilst it's charging?

[-] Fogle@lemmy.ca 4 points 1 year ago

Not only is it on the underside, when it's plugged in the sensor stops working. You literally can't use it plugged in.

[-] Nioxic@lemmy.dbzer0.com 5 points 1 year ago

Someone choose to design it like that.

[-] RajaGila@feddit.nl 2 points 1 year ago

That is evident. The bigger issue is ergonomics. My hand will cramp up within minutes of using that piece of shit. While the charging thing is stupid, it is only a minor inconvenience that is blown out of proportion. The ergonomics aspect is the major issue IMO.
