Just watched gameplay of unreleased game plants vs zombies 3 . Its so bad, original from 2009 is milion times better.

And same goes for all other games. Why are old games better than new ones, they dont put any efort today to make good quality game.

It looks like they just want to make it quick and cheap. No wonder games are so lov quality..

A lot of the "old games were better" is because we mainly remember the best of the best. There has always been shovelware.

On the other hand, I do agree that AAA gaming is fairly stale. I believe it's mainly because the games are huge investments that have to be a "safe" bet, which is one way to make art (of any type) boring.

But there are indie studios making amazing games these days, because the incentive there is to differentiate their product from the others. Once an idea gets popular enough, AAA studios will pick it up and grind it into the dirt.

I would disagree with the idea that games are worse now. I think the best stuff is getting made today, it's just harder to find it in a deluge of shovelware. Look in the indie and AA space for interesting games.

I look at youtube with revievers and finding nothing. They should include indian games as well as i see they do. So can you tell me for some examples oglf these great games today?

  • Hollow Knight & Silksong if you want hard platformers/metroidvania
  • Return of the Obra Dinn if you want a great detective game
  • Disco Elysium if you want the maybe greatest game. Genrewise its closest to an CRPG, but without fights, "just" talking
  • Tyranny if you want a great CRPG
  • Subnautica if you want a great survival open world game
  • Minecraft is still also a great game
  • Hades if you want a great Roguelite

With those games you would already have something like 400 hours covered.

They're not, you're just looking at ones that are shit. Even Android and iOS have good games, but the app stores on those systems don't promote good games at all. You need an external tool or site like minireview.io to even find something that isn't gatcha-laden excrement.

[-] PrincessCory@lemmy.wtf 2 points 4 days ago

Thank you fore this info, do you have some recomandations?

[-] JillyB@beehaw.org 3 points 4 days ago

Pixel Dungeon if you like turn-based dungeon crawler rogue-likes.

Shattered Pixel Dungeon for the same thing but more fleshed out.

Balatro

Lichess

For mobile? I don't play a lot on my phone these days, but I remember liking Threes! and the Partia series (looks a lot like Fire Emblem for GBA).

[-] Nemo@slrpnk.net 23 points 5 days ago

Sturgeon's Law: 90% of anything is crap. You're comparing the best of yesteryear against the entirety of the current crop.

[-] PrincessCory@lemmy.wtf 1 points 4 days ago

No am looking for best games today same as i look at best games from the past.. And i find nothing today, while in the past there are good games. My question is why there is no game that is on the same level today as games in past, not even asking to be better..

[-] Fyrnyx@kbin.melroy.org 11 points 4 days ago

You need to stop doing this thing called generalizing, which is what you're doing. You're assuming that there are NO good games released in what, 5 years? 10 years? When there already has been. The problem is you, you looking in the wrong areas and it also sounds like you're relying on AAA gaming development to deliver something for you which you need to stop expecting them to. They're on autopilot, in which, they don't care what you think.

Also, some people are recommending good games and there you are shooting them down because you're being prissy. Maybe the other problem is you just being too picky.

[-] Glide@lemmy.ca 14 points 5 days ago

Ah, I see you have never picked up a "1000 best games for Windows" CD.

There are a lot of low quality games to complain about. There are also a lot of high quality, new games to experience. 10 years from now, the low quality games will be forgotten, while the high quality games will be looked back on, fondly. Posts will be made comparing the "high effort, high quality games from 10 years ago" to the modern slop, and the cycle will repeat..

[-] Fyrnyx@kbin.melroy.org 1 points 4 days ago

They still sell them in stores. I used to have seen so many crappy bundled games crammed into discs. A lot of them will just be carbon copies of one another.

It is like those listings online, of people selling 300 in 1 games for consoles and they're all NES or SNES that make you think you've got a deal. It just makes you feel dirty.

[-] Glide@lemmy.ca 2 points 4 days ago

Fascinating. As much shit as I talk, I did discover a lot of good games via those discs. The Blades of Exile franchise, for example, really stands out as a series of underrated early windows RPGs.

[-] PrincessCory@lemmy.wtf 1 points 4 days ago

Dont even have to be 10, tell me some good games today..

[-] Glide@lemmy.ca 5 points 4 days ago

Hades 2, Silksong, and the FFTactics remake, all of which came out in the last like 3 weeks.

I'd genuinely call the first two 10/10s, and the only thing stopping me saying that about all three is FFTactics' commitment to staying true to the original, as they kept some features, qualities and even bugs moving forward that are jank in the modern era, but keep the game feeling more authentic.

[-] PrincessCory@lemmy.wtf 1 points 4 days ago

Ok if that is so tell me just 10 good quality mobile games today.

[-] Glide@lemmy.ca 3 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago)

Balatro, Loop Hero, all three of the noteworthy Mihoyo games, Sword of Convallaria - I'm going to get flak for including gacha games, but these ones are surprisingly well designed and written games, despite predatory monetization practices - Stardew Valley, Dead Cells, Vampire Survivors...

I think we're kidding ourselves if we ignore that Among Us was a genuinely good game, despite being notorious brainrot zoomer bait.

I'm not sure why we shifted the goal post to mobile games, but the point stands.

Edit: I had to come back because I remembered how much I enjoyed Monster Hunter Stories on mobile, and the mobile version is actually the most complete version.

[-] lukecooperatus@lemmy.ml 14 points 5 days ago

Because of investors needing a quick "win" with a game studio acquisition, and because gamers buy the slop that someone managed to shit out while trying to appease those investors.

The investors cash out and are emboldened to go burn some other game studio into the ground again. If the studio hasn't imploded badly enough yet, the investors demand another game with whatever IP "worked" last time, but at a lesser budget with more aggressive deadlines, so the next result that is shit out is worse, but players still buy it.

The cycle continues endlessly, it's the same pattern in every industry because it's all the same tiny group of investors with "diversified portfolios" ruining everything in the name of profit.

[-] MotoAsh@piefed.social 2 points 4 days ago

Not just investors. Capitalists in general. The stock market just makes it much easier for capitalists to pretend that profit at any expense is wise.

[-] PrincessCory@lemmy.wtf 2 points 4 days ago

Wow this is deep and makes sense!

[-] Damarus@feddit.org 13 points 5 days ago

You clearly don't look at the indie scene enough, if your opinion about the state of gaming is that low. There's absolutely genius games releasing all the time, and more of them than ever before, as it's gotten so much easier to make and release games by yourself.

[-] PrincessCory@lemmy.wtf 1 points 4 days ago

Great, tell me just some examples of these many great games..

[-] Damarus@feddit.org 6 points 4 days ago

Binding of Isaac, Expedition 33, Dwarf Fortress, Caves of Qud, Abiotic Factor, Tokyo Xtreme Racer, Celeste, Terraria, Peak, Art of Rally, Balatro, Outer Wilds, Satisfactory, The Talos Principle, Redout, Grim Dawn...

These are just a few amazing games but such a list has little value in my opinion, which is why I didn't name any in the first place. If you go into some more detail about what games you enjoy and why, people might give you more direct recommendations. Generally just start looking at more games on Steam and you'll find something interesting.

[-] Tenderizer78@lemmy.ml 8 points 5 days ago

Obligatory "wrong games".

EA is never gonna be interested in quality. Play Decimate Drive, or Lost Orbit: Terminal Velocity, or Duskers (just picking random games I've played recently).

[-] monovergent@lemmy.ml 6 points 5 days ago

We used to have 300000-in-1 shovelware too, but I get the sentiment. Many corporate studios have consolidated and enshittified in lockstep with big tech. It plagues mature series much like films that are re-released to death. I'd suggest looking at fresh releases from smaller or independent developers. That said, I don't have recommendations from personal experience since I end up spending more time modding games from 15 years ago than playing.

[-] UltraGiGaGigantic@lemmy.ml 1 points 4 days ago

Sounds like the length of copyright is far to long.

You say its well done but i dont see that, why do we have pixelated cards in 2025?

Why it have plane buttons with no ornaments or any detailes on them? Look at old games, look at buttons in old games, look at detailes.

Find on youtube original, first dota gameplay and look at how mouse looks like. That is art. And look how mouse is in this 20 years newer game…

[-] Damarus@feddit.org 3 points 4 days ago

Because that's the vision of the designer, why do you bother so much? Just play it and try to understand what it's about.

[-] PrincessCory@lemmy.wtf 1 points 4 days ago

Ok you should just play the game and see whats fun in it, but i ask why its alvayse the same in new games, why there is no art like in old games.. Art in story art in visuals. For example, in plants vs zombies from 2009 you have 3 buttons in botom right corner. First is “options” second is “help” third is “quit” Standard stuf right? Ok but if you click on “help” button you will get a message that when zombies show up you just stit and do nothing, and you will win the game when they reach your house… And also it says this message is brought to you by zombies.. Great help ha? XD

That is fun, that is game, such things tou dont see now a days..

Also those buttons are vases with flovers, and if you click on flover it falls off, thats art..

[-] Damarus@feddit.org 4 points 4 days ago

It is art, but you don't understand it yet.

[-] ByteMe@lemmy.world 5 points 5 days ago

Too commercialized

Capatilism and profit over human beings and facism are Pretty much all of it. Got to keep the profits high as possible and slave labor for more profits.

[-] lunatique@lemmy.ml 3 points 5 days ago

They cash grab so hard now and days. They do it in movies too. They don't care about the quality. The leader of the creation teams are the new era graduates who suck. Like they aren't that talented and AI their way through exams and test. I also think that the customer has been extremely dumb with lower standards so the creators unfortunately don't put in as much effort

[-] pineapple@lemmy.ml 1 points 4 days ago

Sure a lot of AAA games are doing pretty poorly. And I think it's due to corporate greed and trying to push out a game as quickly as possible, there are definitely some good new AAA games and the indie market is better than ever before.

[-] cerebralhawks@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 5 days ago

None of them were ever good.

[-] bjoern_tantau@swg-empire.de 1 points 5 days ago

2023 has been an amazing year for gaming. One surefire game of the year after the other. And 2025 isn't too shabby either.

[-] PrincessCory@lemmy.wtf 1 points 4 days ago

Great to hear that news, give me some examples!

[-] JillyB@beehaw.org 3 points 4 days ago
